Curriculum Overview – Year 3 2016-17 Spring Term English GENRES NARRATIVE WRITING e.g. fairytalesChildren will learn how to create characters, settings and plots. POETRY, DIALOGUES- Children will compose and rehearse sentences orally. NON-CHRONOLOGICAL REPORTS, LETTER WRITING- Children will use organisational devices to fit a purpose such as headings and sub-headings. VOCABULARY, GRAMMAR AND PUNCTUATION Use of conjunctions to express time; extend sentences using: when, if, because, although. Children to use simple, compound and varied sentences; also embedded clauses. Children will include adverbs, adjectives and synonyms for detail; Recognise prepositions and determiners. Children will use question marks and apostrophes for both contraction and possession. Children will also review accurate use of commas and final punctuation Science, Computing, SCIENCE THE POWER OF FORCES – how forces can make objects move, speed up, slow down or change direction, compare how things move on different surfaces, how to identify magnetic materials, how to carry out fair tests. ROCK DETECTIVES – establishing core knowledge and understanding of rocks, their relationship to soils and how fossils have formed over time. COMPUTING WE ARE OPINION POLLSTERS – Children will use digital tools to create a survey online. WE ARE PRESENTERS – Children create simple videos, gaining skills at shooting live shots. They will also be editing and presenting. HISTORY ANGLO- SAXONS- A study of the Anglo Saxon way of life, Anglo-Saxon religious beliefs, food, crime, punishment, villages and homes. GEOGRAPHY SURREY AND THE UK – Understand our local environment. Understand where people live. Compare Surrey to other regions in the country. How their town has changed over time. Research the natural resources that are used in Surrey. Mathematics MULTIPLICATION AND DIVISION- Recall and use multiplication and division facts for the 3, 4 and 8 multiplication tables; Count from 0 in multiples of 4 and 8. NUMBER AND PLACE VALUE- Compare and order numbers up to 1000; Read and write numbers up to 1000 in numerals and in words; Recognise the place value of each digit in a 3-digit number (100s, 10s, 1s). ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION-Add and subtract numbers mentally, including: a three-digit number and 1s; a three-digit number and 10s; a three-digit number and 100s; Add and subtract numbers with up to 3 digits, using formal written methods of columnar addition and subtraction. PROPERTIES OF SHAPE- Draw 2-D shapes and describe them; Recognise angles as a property of shape or a description of a turn. FRACTIONS- Compare and order unit fractions, and fractions with the same denominators; Recognise and use fractions as numbers: unit fractions and non-unit fractions with small denominators. MEASUREMENT (LENGTH AND PERIMETER)Measure, compare, add and subtract: lengths (m/cm/mm). STATISTICS- Interpret and present data using bar charts, pictograms and tables; Solve one-step and two-step questions using information presented in scaled bar charts and pictograms and tables. HOW YOU CAN HELP Practise timetables by singing, chanting etc. Find opportunities for your child to tell the time using analogue and digital clocks, e.g. at a station, in a shop, on a computer. Art & DT UNDER THE SEA - learn how to use a range of painting techniques and wire sculpture to create a final piece. EGG COSIES- plan, design and create an egg cosy; practice different stitching styles. PE & GAMES FRENCH CELEBRATIONS – Children learn the months of the year and how to celebrate birthdays, parties and sporting achievements in French. PORTRAITS – Children learn about parts of the body, colours and monsters in French. GYMNASTICS – travelling, further development of rolls and creating varied paired sequences. RE & PSHCE LIVING TOGETHER IN ONE WORLD – learning about being part of a community and about global issues. EASTER – the Easter story, Good Friday, Christian symbols related to Easter, pictorial representations of Easter. WHAT MAKES A GOOD FRIEND? – Children learn the differences between themselves and others, what makes a good friend and how to deal with issues that might arise in friendships. FOOD FUN AND FITNESS – Children learn about the range of sources their food comes from, from where in the world their food comes from and some of the challenges that people might experience around keeping physically active. DANCE – Animal themed dances creating movements to reflect the speed and mood of a piece of music, travelling, elevation, gestures, turning and stillness. GAMES – Hockey and tag rugby. Improving skills in these sports with control, defending and attacking. HELPING YOUR CHILD….. MUSIC ANIMAL MAGIC - Recognising how sound can be interpreted in movements and relating animals to musical pieces. RHYTHM AND PATTERNS – continuation of using standard musical notation. Encourage independence (e.g. attempting homework on their own, learning to tie their own shoe laces and tie etc.) Listen to your child read every day and talk about the text with them. When they struggle with words, encourage them to break down the word and look for sounds that they know. Practise spellings and times tables every night. Encourage neat presentation of homework including joined up handwriting and check work for small errors. Use the home-school planner for reference.
