“THE BODFISH CREED”
** BODFISH FOREVER **
We love the United States Of America
We Are unique in our informality
We respect each other
We take pride in tradition
We support our military personnel
We honor and remember our veterans
We are so proud to be Marines
Author, Mike“Squidley” Enos, 2002
Bodfish Is Forever!!
April 23 will mark the 9th year of the passing of Bodfish Chapter Patriarch and founder John Brewster Loomis. John reported to his final duty station, Heavens Gate, on
Sunday, April 23, 2006.
He left behind a legacy not only with his family but with Marines, sailors', airmen and
soldiers who have had the honor of joining the Bodfish Chapter, 1st Marine Division
Association and calling themselves a “Bodfisher”.
The Chapter continues to grow and although not as big an annual reunion as we once
had there still 130+ members who show up every February to carry on the tradition of
the Bodfish Chapter.
I often hear people say, “Nothing is Forever” . Well, they have never known the
Bodfish Spirit for if they did they would know that Bodfish is Forever. Just ask the
“Big Man” himself or his son “J.C.” they can be found visiting the Marines and FMF
Corpsman in Heavens Bodfish Saloon.
A question that is often asked by fellow Marines and FMF Corpsman who have not
had the pleasure of participating in one of our Chapter gatherings, Bodfish campouts or
FMDA Reunion Hospitality Rooms is “What the hell is Bodfish?”
You can spend hours trying to explain what the Bodfish Chapter is all about but until
you’ve experienced it first hand words can not cause one to fully comprehend just what
goes on.
From it’s selection of Chapter Officers, the annual business meeting, interacting with
the “Creature”, experiencing the Bodfish Bevy of Beauties to the Bodfish initiation and
oath , one must experience it for themselves to fully understand what the Bodfish Chapter is all about.
Perhaps for the reader who has not had the Bodfish experience it may be summed up
in a creed that was written by one of our Bodfish Past Presidents, posted to the left of
this article.
I can tell you this. Whether you enter into a Bodfish Hospitality Room at a reunion or
the Bodfish Saloon at the Bodfish Annual Campout you step back in time to an era
when the old Marines who started the Chapter gathering in the name of Marine brotherhood leaving all the political issues of the Association at the door and just had a wild
and crazy time regardless of rank.
The Bodfish Chapter has made a positive impact on many a Marine and FMF Corpsman who proudly served.
I have seen old Recon Marines and grunts loyal to their Company and Battalions vowing never to mix outside their own join and embrace the Bodfish. Why? Because we
all claimed the title Marine and the Bodfish experience allows everyone an opportunity
to, as they say, “Let your hair down” and have a fun time.
For me, Bodfish is Forever!!
Stories and Tales of the Bodfish have been told over the years. Many are taken lightly
but some have touched the hearts of many. As you turn to page 5 of this issue you will
read of one of those Bodfish stories that I’m sure will strike a little soft spot in your
heart. After you read it, tell me that the powers above played no part in the story. DT
Spelling and grammar errors are purposely added for those who enjoying finding and pointing them out.

A Message From Chapter President,
John Arthur
(661) 297-2125 - [email protected]
Marines and Corpsmen,
The Memorial / Corpsman Appreciation get
together couldn’t happen in Laughlin due to
scheduling . We have secured the VFW in
Canyon Country. Please see the schedule
listed in this volume for the date and time.
Still no volunteers to sit on the Family of
Warriors Committee. The Family of Warriors program is the perfect example of Marines helping Marines. So many times in
the media or civilian circles they ask why
the Marine Corp is so special, why do we
have such Esprit de Corps. Marines have
been helping Marines since 1775. Do you
think that if a young man walked into Tun
Tavern, signed up, but had no money that
someone didn’t buy him a pint of ale? We
are a family that cares for itself when politicians and civilians don’t. Think about the
times a brother Marine helped you. Do you
really want to see this program fade away?
We are looking into ways of fund raising to
make the Del Mar campout affordable. VP
Norm Kellems has a committee planning
things. Norm and JROD ( Julio Rodriguez,
Director) are panning a couple of Fundraising BBQ’s. One will held in the Santa Clarita Valley and the other in the La Verne area.
They are going to try and raise the funds,
$1000.00, to cover the cost of the insurance for that weekend.
The insurance is required by Marine Corps
Community Services and the Base. It has
been our only hurdle in the past that has
kept us from going to Del Mar Beach.
If you have any ideas for this or any other
things you would like to see the chapter get
involved in please let one of your officers
know. We welcome any and all ideas.

Molly and Tom Kelly
On Sunday, 22 March the 1st Regiment held their 1st
joint baby shower. 19 new moms and moms-to-be
from the 1/1, 2/1, 1/4 and HQ had a great time at the
community center in Laguna Niguel. Each mom
had a handmade baby blanket (donated by the Chapter) at their place for lunch. After a nice lunch and
shower games, each mom received baby packets of
everything they need for baby! A good time was
had by all!! 29 March will be the next event for the
1/4.
The Easter Bunny will be making an appearance
along with an egg hunt for all ages at their annual
Easter Event. The event will be at the Ranch House
from 3-6 pm. Call us for further information.
On 2 April, join Molly and me as we travel to Lake
O’Neill for the 1/4 Family Day. This will be the last
family event before deployment. The 1/4 is scheduled for deployment in mid-April.
Time for the festivities is 11-2pm. There will be
food, sumo suits, jousting ring, rock wall, obstacle
course and of course bounce houses plus Street Beat
will be performing live. Join the fun!! There is
something for everyone and it is a great way to interact with the families.
SAVE THE DATE!! The 1/4 Birthday Ball will be
on 19 November at Bally’s Las Vegas. More will
follow once details are worked out.
.
All of your contributions - blankets, food, coupons,
funds, etc. - make a difference in the lives of the
Marines/Sailors and their families. It is truly Marine
helping Marine. Keep up the good work!!
Thanks again for all your support in keeping with
the spirit of the Corps.

Well, after receiving news of the change in power
on the BOD of the FMDA, I have come to the
conclusion which should not surprise anyone that
the foxes are now in and controling the chicken
coop.
With the leaving of Jim Zelpis (Treasurer), Mike
Galyean (Secretary) and Dave Franklin (Legal
Officer) it does not leave anyone left that is capable to hold the fort (FMDA) together and steer it
into the future.
From current president to up-coming Treasurer
(AJ Burn) was what this organization really needed, a person who could not lead the FMDA to anything but total collapse. Please, is there anyone
that can keep an eye on the money and the
books other than the desperados that will be left
in charge of the FMDA?
The election, from what I have read is violating
the By-Laws of the FMDA that they were sworn to
uphold.
When you have a company that does not follow
the rules or By-Laws and just does what they feel
like doing then failure is just around the corner.
With the departure of those three loyal, honorable
and diligent men from the BOD there can be
nothing but failure and disgrace. But I can understand their frustration with the crew that is left
running the FMDA into the ground.. Get off of the
ship before it sinks and takes you down with it. It
has been clear for several years of this happening and was predictable. So sad after so many
good years. It was once a proud and well run machine until recently when the buffoons took over.
Actually the only ones that really care about the
chapters in the West, are the chapters themselves. No encouragement or support from the
hooligans in charge pof the FMDA. Well anyway,
good luck to all.

West)
Until next month stay healthy and keep it legal..

The Story of the Jacket
Since the Central Coast Veterans Memorial Museum was founded in 2002, our mission has
been to honor all veterans, past and present, and to tell their stories. We’ve heard tales of
bravery, sagas of sacrifice, stories that made us chuckle and those that brought tears to our eyes.
We’ve heard narratives from eyewitnesses to history. What follows is the amazing “Story of
the Jacket.”
On May 29, 2014, Arroyo Grande resident Ms. Sally Woelper came to the Museum to ask for
assistance in putting together the World War II ribbons and medals of her late father, Arthur F.
Corwin, for display at the private memorial service his family was organizing. Mr. Corwin enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1942 and after his training as a propeller specialist, he joined
Marine Transport Squadron VMR 353, probably in the same squadron in which 1940’s film star
Tyrone Power served, and was then deployed to Okinawa, Iwo Jima, and Kwajalein. Mr. Corwin, very proud of being a Marine,
was a long-time member of Marine Corps League Detachment 680 and has a bronze plaque on the Museum’s Wall of Honor. Ms.
Woelper showed the Museum’s Director Harry Hoover and Dennis Enos, Assistant Curator, boxes of letters and photographs, ribbons, shooting medals, and chevrons and told them stories about her father’s time in the Marine Corps and his later association with
the First Marine Division and their annual reunions at the Tar Spring Ranch in the rural area of Arroyo Grande.
Tar Spring Ranch was owned by John Loomis, who also served in the Marine Corps in WWII and fought on Okinawa. For those
who didn’t have the privilege of seeing the Ranch, just visualize the old buildings at Knott’s Berry Farm in Buena Park, CA. The
twelve to fourteen structures which served as the center of these Marine reunions, were original old buildings from the Village of
Arroyo Grande, which were removed and reassembled at the Ranch. For over forty years, during Presidents’ Week in February,
John Loomis opened the Ranch to current and former Marines and their families who often brought tents and trailers and spent the
entire week there. Many of those Marines donated their uniforms and memorabilia for displays and for ceremonies. Over the years,
several hundred such items were collected and filled the old buildings.
When John Loomis passed away on April 23, 2006 , his wife Lindy Loomis donated all the uniforms and equipment her husband
had collected to the Central Coast Veterans Memorial Museum. Because of inadequate storage conditions at Tar Spring Ranch,
very few of the uniforms were salvageable; however, among those that “survived” were four World War II Marine Corps jackets,
which were dry cleaned and properly stored at the Museum.
Meanwhile back at the Museum: Sally Woelper told them about the photographs and letters she brought in. She also mentioned
that she wished she still had her father’s uniforms which he had donated to John Loomis’s at the Tar Spring Ranch where he was a
frequent visitor. Harry Hoover, a former Marine who also went to fourteen of the reunions, asked Assistant Archivist Tim
Rathbone, to open our Marine Corps storage cabinets and pick out several WWII era jackets to show Ms. Woelpert while they reviewed her father’s documents and a set of his Gunnery Sergeant chevrons. At that time, seeing how touched she was about her
father’s service, Harry decided to loan Ms. Woelper a WW II Marine jacket for her father’s memorial service so that she could
properly display his ribbons. While Dennis Enos was organizing Mr. Corwin’s ribbons, Harry was checking the jackets. That’s
when Harry saw that one of them also had a gunny’s chevrons and a Marine Air Wing patch. When Harry opened the jacket to reveal the inside of the left sleeve containing the date of manufacture, he saw that it said 1942. A review of Mr. Corwin’s documents
showed that he had enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1942. And then, miracle of miracles, when Harry opened the right sleeve, where
Marines mark their equipment, there was the name of Sally’s father, Arthur Corwin, and his serial number! This was obviously the
jacket Mr. Corwin had donated years and years ago at a Bodfish Marine reunion and one of the very few that had survived. Then
Harry showed it to Ms. Woelper. Many tears were shed over this amazing revelation. Here was a woman who had merely come in
for a little assistance on how to properly display her father’s ribbons and medals but left with her father’s original jacket which she
believed had been lost forever.
The Museum staff is highly honored to have been able to assist Ms. Woelper and to restore to her family a piece of their history.
This reaffirms why the Central Coast Veterans Memorial Museum exists.
Many thanks to Harry Hoover and Sandy McGregor , Central Coast Veterans Memorial Museum for allowing this article
to be reprinted in the Semper Fi News, the only monthly source of Bodfish news.. Semper Fi & Bodfish Forever!

I just
received an audit on my tax return for
2013 from the IRS. It puzzles me!!!
They are questioning how many dependents I
claimed.
I guess it was because of my response to the
question: "List all dependents?"
I replied: 12 million illegal immigrants; 3 million
crack heads;
42 million unemployed people on food stamps,
2 million people in over 243 prisons;
Half of Mexico ; and 535 persons in the U.S.
House and Senate." 1 useless President.
Evidently, this was NOT an acceptable answer .

GENE “IAS”
WUESTENFELD
PRESIDENT
Feb 2015– Feb 2016
Reporting from FOB Fountain Hills, AZ
Greeting Bodfishers,
As your President "IAS" I assure all that the
"Bone" is safe at this remote outpost. The
"Bone" is displayed in a place of honor and
a 24 hour "firewatch" is posted. The "Bone"
is secured at end of the day as taps
is sounded. The perimeters are manned by
Bodfish member Bob Bohach, by Bodfish
Past President Coleman Caughlin and the
current Bodfish Sgt-at Arms, Bob Boland.
As we in Phoenix have very liberal gun
laws, each is fully armed. Any attempt
to breach the wire will be met with extreme
force ( the intruder(s) will identified and the
threat will be immediately eliminated).
With the approval of the Past Presidents,
as your current Bodfish President "IAS", I
will be taking the "Bone" on my initial deployment to Chicago on 9 April for the
"special op" as mentioned in my last report.
At this time I am not at liberty to discuss
the purpose of my mission. I have been assured by the Past Presidents that the Rectum Team will be on "stand by" for a rapid vertical insertion and rescue if needed. The "Bone " will be displayed on my outbound flight from Sky Harbor Airport in
Phoenix. Upon my return I will report to the
Past Presidents as to the results of this mission. As "IAS" I will present to the Past
Presidents, for their approval, a plan for
any future missions.
In closing I leave you with the following "
The United States Marine Corps preserves
democracy, The United States Marine
Corps does not practice democracy". This I
learned when I arrived on the bus at MCRD
San Diego.
