A local teen will soon be representing Kansas at a national pageant.
Cyara Heredia, currently an eighth grader at South Middle School, was recently crowned Miss
Kansas Junior High 2015 during the Miss Colorado, Kansas and Wyoming Junior High, High
School and Collegiate America Pageant, which took place the weekend of Nov. 15 and 16.
“Being a part of the pageants is a rewarding and life-changing experience. I’m a stronger and
more confident, self-assured and goal-oriented person simply as a result of my participation in
pageants,” Heredia said. “And now I have the honor to represent my hometown and travel
through the states.”
Heredia said there was a lot of preparation needed going into the pageant and added how her
mother, Marisol, was a guiding force during that preparation.
“You have to educate yourself and be a good student in school – that plays a big role when
they’re interviewing you at the pageant and asking you questions...and my mom was always
supporting me,” she said. “She taught me everything I needed to get prepared for that weekend
– how to walk, sit, speak and all of that. She guided me every step of the way.”
The Bully Resistance Anti-Violence Education (B.R.A.V.E.) program was the platform Heredia
ran on. B.R.A.V.E. is an anti-bullying campaign that promotes building respect and value for
everyone through classrooms, library and community presentations to all school-aged children

and help create awareness and promote a safe and bully-free environment. With her new title,
Heredia said she hopes to spread the word of the B.R.A.V.E. program as well as encourage
others to enter similar pageants.
“B.R.A.V.E is an amazing program and I think a lot of kids of my community can benefit from it
by learning and building respect and value for everyone,” Heredia said of the program. “Now
that I am Miss Kansas Junior High 2015 my mission is to spread the word and say no to bullying
in my community and go to my local schools and promote building respect and value for
everyone.”
With her B.R.A.V.E. platform, Heredia said her goals are to reduce the negative effects of
bullying through being kind, courteous and respectful to other and to teach children to go to an
adult or someone they trust when they see someone being bullied along with promoting
legislation and policies in schools and communities that promote a bully-free and safe
environment.
Heredia’s next stop on the pageant road will be at the national competition, which will be at the
Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resort in Orlando, Fla. She said she is very excited for
this next step.
“When I won I was so happy and I definitely knew from that moment my life would
change,” Heredia said of her win. “It’s such an honor and a dream come true – at that moment
I was happy all of my hard work had paid off. I’m proud of how far I have come and this is just
the beginning – I’m very excited and happy for the future.”
