Emmy Award-winning television series Great Scenic Railway Journeys described it as “one of the world’s great train trips”. The Taieri River Gorge is dramatic in all seasons and all weathers with dark peaty pools, white water rapids, sheer cliffs, towering viaducts and ten tunnels. Constructing the line was an engineering marvel and its Breathtaking landscapes at The Notches colourful history is part of the adventure. There is a live commentary. A four hours return journey operates daily travelling as far as Pukerangi, a farm hamlet 250 metres above sea level. The train stops for a short while for the locomotive to switch ends for the return journey. A six hours return journey on scheduled days continues beyond Pukerangi to the end of the line at Middlemarch. The train stops here for one hour, time enough to explore this quiet country town. Middlemarch is the eastern portal of the hugely popular Otago Central Rail Trail and Dunedin Railways provides a link to the trail. We can also transport your bicycle. You will travel on board the ‘Dunedin Silver Fern’ with first class comfort, panoramic windows, air conditioning and table service. Waitati Seasider is a 90 minutes ‘express’ journey which pauses at the township of Waitati beside Blueskin Bay before returning to Dunedin. The views of Otago Harbour, Port Chalmers, Careys Bay, Mapoutahi Peninsula and Blueskin Bay are spectacular. First-class comfort on ‘Dunedin Silver Fern’ Hop-off, hop-on at Moeraki Boulders. Oamaru Seasider is a 7 hours return journey, with big ocean views along the way, including beautiful Warrington, Karitane and Katiki beaches. There is a one hour stopover in Oamaru for you to explore the whitestone architecture, Victorian Heritage Precinct, quirky Steampunk sculptures, art galleries, craft shops and cafés. Take some time to visit the boat haven and playground at Friendly Bay with its novel tree stump carvings. Moeraki Boulders Seasider is a hop-off, hop-on option with the Oamaru Seasider so you can visit and explore Moeraki Boulders. Enjoy two hours to marvel at these geological phenomena and stroll along the beach. Take your own lunch or you can buy it at Moeraki Café. The Oamaru Seasider will pick you up at about 2pm on its return journey to Dunedin. Passengers should have a reasonable level of mobility as the hop-off hop-on involves stepping down off the train without a platform and a walk of approximately 600 metres each way to and from the beach where the boulders are located. Please make your booking, then obtain your seating ticket from Dunedin Railway Station BEFORE you board the train. All trains depart from and return to Dunedin Railway Station. Taieri Gorge Railway trains also stop at Wingatui where you can board/disembark. One way fares are available for all services. All carriages are fully enclosed and have heating. Train sets comprise heritage carriages and/or modern carriages featuring panoramic windows, dining tables, and air conditioning more suited to group seating. Trains have open air viewing platforms (except ‘Dunedin Silver Fern’). The Seasider trips are on board the ‘Dunedin Silver Fern’, with first class comfort, table service, panoramic windows and air conditioning. There is an informative live commentary on all trips and photo stops en route whenever possible.
