Taieri Gorge Railway is a spectacular train journey giving
you views of Dunedin City, Taieri Plain and the Taieri River
Gorge that you can only see by train.
Emmy Award-winning television series Great Scenic Railway
Journeys described it as “one of the world’s great train trips”.
The Taieri River Gorge is dramatic in all seasons and all
weathers with dark peaty pools, white water rapids, sheer
cliffs, towering viaducts and ten tunnels.
Constructing the line was an engineering marvel and its
Breathtaking landscapes at The Notches
colourful history is part of the adventure. There is a live
commentary.
A four hours return journey operates daily travelling as far
as Pukerangi, a farm hamlet 250 metres above sea level.
The train stops for a short while for the locomotive to switch
ends for the return journey.
A six hours return journey on scheduled days continues
beyond Pukerangi to the end of the line at Middlemarch.
The train stops here for one hour, time enough to explore
this quiet country town.
Middlemarch is the eastern portal of the hugely popular
Otago Central Rail Trail and Dunedin Railways provides
a link to the trail. We can also transport your bicycle.

The Pacific Coast Railway north of Dunedin was considered
the highlight of a now bygone South Island Main Trunk Line
journey with stunningly beautiful views of the Pacific Ocean,
white-sand beaches and rolling East Otago farmlands.
You will travel on board the ‘Dunedin Silver Fern’ with first
class comfort, panoramic windows, air conditioning and table
service.
Waitati Seasider is a 90 minutes ‘express’ journey which
pauses at the township of Waitati beside Blueskin Bay
before returning to Dunedin. The views of Otago Harbour,
Port Chalmers, Careys Bay, Mapoutahi Peninsula and
Blueskin Bay are spectacular.
First-class comfort on ‘Dunedin Silver Fern’
Hop-off, hop-on at Moeraki Boulders.
Oamaru Seasider is a 7 hours return journey, with big ocean
views along the way, including beautiful Warrington, Karitane
and Katiki beaches. There is a one hour stopover in Oamaru
for you to explore the whitestone architecture, Victorian
Heritage Precinct, quirky Steampunk sculptures, art galleries,
craft shops and cafés. Take some time to visit the boat haven
and playground at Friendly Bay with its novel tree stump
carvings.
Moeraki Boulders Seasider is a hop-off, hop-on option with
the Oamaru Seasider so you can visit and explore Moeraki
Boulders. Enjoy two hours to marvel at these geological
phenomena and stroll along the beach. Take your own lunch
or you can buy it at Moeraki Café. The Oamaru Seasider will
pick you up at about 2pm on its return journey to Dunedin.
Passengers should have a reasonable level of mobility as the hop-off hop-on involves
stepping down off the train without a platform and a walk of approximately 600 metres
each way to and from the beach where the boulders are located.
Explore Oamaru and its celebrated Victorian architecture
