Precautions
Safety
• If anything falls into the cabinet,
unplug the unit and have it
checked by qualified personnel
before operating it any further.
• The unit is not disconnected from
the mains as long as it is
connected to the mains outlet,
even if the unit itself has been
turned off.
• Unplug the unit from the wall
outlet if you do not intend to use it
for an extended period of time. To
disconnect the cord, pull it out by
the plug, never by the cord.
Installing
• Allow adequate air circulation to
prevent internal heat buildup.
• Do not place the unit on surfaces
(rugs, blankets, etc.) or near
materials (curtains, draperies) that
may block the ventilation slots.
• Do not install the unit near heat
sources such as radiators, or air
ducts, or in a place subject to
direct sunlight, excessive dust,
mechanical vibration, or shock.
• Do not install the unit in an
inclined position. It is designed to
be operated in a horizontal
position only.
• Keep the unit and discs away from
equipment with strong magnets,
such as microwave ovens, or large
loudspeakers.
• Do not place heavy objects on the
unit.
• If the unit is brought directly from
a cold to a warm location,
moisture may condense inside the
Compact AV System and cause
damage to the lenses. When you
first install the unit, or when you
move it from a cold to a warm
location, wait for about 30 minutes
before operating the unit.
Precautions
On safety
Should any solid object or liquid fall into the
cabinet, unplug the receiver and have it checked
by qualified personnel before operating it any
further.
On power sources
• The unit is not disconnected from the AC power
source (mains) as long as it is connected to the
wall outlet, even if the unit itself has been
turned off.
• AC power cord must be changed only at the
qualified service shop.
On placement
• Place the receiver in a location with adequate
ventilation to prevent heat build-up in the
receiver.
• At high volume, over long periods of time, the
cabinet becomes hot to the touch. This is not a
malfunction. However, touching the cabinet
should be avoided. Do not place the unit in a
confined space where ventilation is poor as this
may cause overheating.
• Do not block the ventilation slots by putting
anything on the receiver. The receiver is
equipped with a high power amplifier. If the
ventilation slots on the top surface are blocked,
the unit can overheat and malfunction.
• Do not place the receiver on a soft surface such
as a rug that might block the ventilation holes
on the bottom.
• Do not place the receiver in a location near heat
sources, or in a place subject to direct sunlight,
excessive dust, or mechanical shock.
On operation
• If the receiver is brought directly from a cold to
a warm location, or is placed in a very damp
room, moisture may condense on the lenses
inside the receiver. Should this occur, the
receiver may not operate properly. In this case,
remove the disc and leave the receiver turned on
for about half an hour until the moisture
evaporates.
• When you move the receiver, take out any discs.
If you don’t, the disc may be damaged.
• For power saving purposes, the receiver can be
completely turned off by the POWER button on
the main unit. Though the LED remains lit for a
while, the receiver is completely off.
On adjusting volume
Do not turn up the volume while listening to a
section with very low level inputs or no audio
signals. If you do, the speakers may be damaged
when a peak level section is played.
On cleaning
Clean the cabinet, panel, and controls with a soft
cloth slightly moistened with a mild detergent
solution. Do not use any type of abrasive pad,
scouring powder or solvent such as alcohol or
benzine.
If you have any questions or problems concerning
your receiver, please consult your nearest Sony
dealer.
On cleaning discs
Do not use a commercially available CD/DVD
cleaning disc. It may cause a malfunction.
On your TV’s colour
If the speakers should cause the TV screen to
have colour irregularity, turn off the TV at once
then turn it on after 15 to 30 minutes. If colour
irregularity should persist, place the speakers
further away from the set.
IMPORTANT NOTICE
Caution: This receiver is capable of holding a
still video image or on-screen display image on
your television screen indefinitely. If you leave
the still video image or on-screen display image
displayed on your TV for an extended period of
time you risk permanent damage to your
television screen. Projection televisions are
especially susceptible to this.

Note on CD-R or CD-RW playback
8
When you playback a CD-R or CD-RW recorded
by a CD-R or CD-RW recorder, you may not be
able to playback, depending on the recording
conditions (e.g., dirty disc, etc.). Also, you should
note that you need to finalize a CD-R or CD-RW
before playing back on another system other than
the one used to make the recording. (Finalizing is
a process to complete the recording.) After
finalizing a CD-R disc, you can play it in any
conventional CD player. However, depending on
the state of the recording, there may be sound
skips during playback. After finalizing a CD-RW
disc, you can play it in a CD-RW compatible
player only.

• Remote Commander (remote) RM-LS10 (1)
• R6 (size AA) batteries (2)
• Video cord (PINPLUG X 1 y PINPLUG X 1) (1)
14GB
Getting Started
Inserting Batteries into the Remote
You can control the receiver using the supplied remote. Insert two R6 (size AA) batteries by matching the
3 and # ends on the batteries to the markings inside the compartment. When using the remote, point it at
the remote sensor
on the receiver.
Getting Started
Notes
•
•
•
•
Do not leave the remote in an extremely hot or humid place.
Do not use a new battery with an old one.
Do not drop any foreign object into the remote casing, particularly when replacing the batteries.
Do not expose the remote sensor to direct light from the sun or lighting apparatus. Doing so may cause a
malfunction.
• If you do not use the remote for an extended period of time, remove the batteries to avoid possible damage from
battery leakage and corrosion.

Step 1: Speaker System Hookup
You can enjoy surround sound by connecting 5 speakers (front L/R speakers, centre speaker, rear L/R
speakers) and active subwoofer to the receiver. If you do not connect 5 speakers and active subwoofer to
the receiver, the receiver optimizes the surround signal depending on the number of connected speakers.
When you connect 2 speakers to the receiver, connect the speakers to the SPEAKERS FRONT L/R jacks.
Notes
•
•
•
•
16GB
Be sure to match the speaker cord to the appropriate terminal: 3 to 3, # to #, L to L, and R to R jack.
Use the high performance speakers.
Use the same size and performance speakers for the front, centre, and rear speakers.
To obtain the best possible surround sound, specify the speaker parameters (delay time, level, etc.) on page 24,

To avoid short-circuiting the speakers
Short-circuiting of the speakers may damage the receiver. To prevent this, be sure to follow these
precautions when connecting the speakers. Make sure the bare wire of each speaker cord does not touch
another speaker terminal or the bare wire of another speaker cord.
Examples of poor conditions of the speaker cord
Stripped speaker cord is
touching another speaker
terminal.
Stripped cords are touching
each other due to excessive
removal of insulation.
After connecting all the components, speakers, and AC power cord (mains lead), output a test tone to check
that all the speakers are connected correctly. For details on outputting a test tone, see page 27.
If no sound is heard from a speaker while outputting a test tone, or a test tone is output from a speaker other
than the one currently displayed on the front panel display, the speaker may be short-circuited. If this
happens, check the speaker connection again.
Notes
• Be sure to match the speaker cord to the appropriate terminal on the components: 3 to 3, and # to #. If the
cords are reversed, the sound will be distorted and will lack bass.
• If you use front speakers with low maximum input rating, adjust the volume carefully to avoid excessive output
on the speakers.

If you connect a digital satellite receiver with the OPTICAL jack
The digital satellite receiver can be connected to the OPTICAL jack instead of the VIDEO IN and AUDIO
IN L/R jacks of the system.
The system can accept both the digital and analog signals. Digital signals have priority over analog signals.
If the digital signal ceases, the analog signal will be processed after 2 seconds.
If you connect a digital satellite receiver without the OPTICAL jack
Connect the digital satellite receiver to the VIDEO IN and AUDIO IN L/R jacks only of the system.
Setup for the system
Setup is necessary for the system, depending on the TV monitor to be connected. You must select the
appropriate system mode for your TV system. If NO DISC appears in the display window, press and hold
PAUSE on the front panel for more than 5 seconds to be able to select a system (PAL, NTSC, or AUTO).
When the selected system does not coincide with the system of your TV, normal

Speaker Setup
For the best possible surround sound, all the speakers other than the subwoofer should be the same distance
from the listening position (A).
However, this receiver allows you to place the centre speaker up to 1.6 meters (5.0 feet) closer (B) and the
rear speakers up to 4.6 meters (15.0 feet) closer (C) to the listening position.
The front speakers can be placed from 1.0 to 15.0 meters (3.0 to 50.0 feet) (A) from the listening position.
You can place the subwoofer in any position.
You can place the rear speakers either behind you or to the side, depending on the shape of your room, etc.

position, then set the balance and level. Use the test tone to adjust the speaker volumes to the same level.
24GB
To set the delay time of the speakers
In Dolby Digital or Dolby Pro Logic mode it is assumed that the distance from the listener to each of the
speakers is equal. If not then setting the delay times of the center or rear speakers the sound will be heard
simultaneously by the listener.
Getting Started
The interval from the speakers to the listener. If the distance from the listener to each speakers is same, in
the Dolby Digital and Dolby Pro Logic mode the delay time of each speakers is as following.
xIn Dolby Digital mode
Center delay time : 0 – 5ms
Rear delay time: 0 – 15ms
xIn Dolby Pro Logic mode
Center delay time : cannot setting
Rear delay time : 15 – 30ms
If the rear delay time is set in Dolby Digital mode, in the Dolby Pro Logic mode the delay time will be
automatically set.
The delay time is 1 msec per 30 cm.
If the center and rear speakers are further than the front speakers from the listener, the delay time will be
at minimum.
Surround delay time setting
If the distance of DS is equal to or longer than the DF in the below figure, set the Surround Delay Time as
0ms. Otherwise, change the setting according to the below.
Ex) If the distance from front speakers to the listener is 3 m and from rear speakers from the listener is 1.5
m, in the Dolby Digital mode the rear delay time is 5 msec.
3m (DF) - 1.5m (DS) = 1.5m (B)
1.5m (B) = 150cm / 30cm = 5msec
In Dolby Pro Logic II (Surround delay time):
• Movie: 10 – 25msec
• Music: 0 – 15msec
Center delay time setting (Dolby Digital mode only)
If the distance of DF is equal to the distance of DC in the below figure, set the Center Delay Time as 0ms.
Otherwise, change the setting according to the table below.
Ex) If the distance from the front speakers to the listener is 3m and from the center speaker to the listener is
2.4m, the center delay time is 2msec.
3m (DF) - 2.4m (DC) = 60cm (A)
60cm (A) / 30cm = 2msec

C WIDTH (Center Width)
This control allows centre-channel sounds to be positioned between the centre speaker and the left/right
speakers over a range of eight steps. Step “3” uses a combination of all three front speakers to give the best
vocal imaging and most seamless soundstage presentation, and is recommended for most recordings. Step
“0” places all centre sound in the centre speaker. Step “7” places all centre sound equally in the left/right
speakers, just as in conventional stereo.
DIMENS. (DIMENSION)
This control allows you to gradually adjust the sound field either towards the front or the rear. This can be
useful to help achieve the desired balance from all the speakers with certain recordings that may contain
either too much or too little spatial effect. Step “0” is the recommended setting, which has no effect on the
sound. Steps 1, 2, and 3 gradually move the sound forward, and steps –1, –2, and –3 move the sound
towards the surrounds.
PANOR. (PANORAMA)
This control extends the front stereo image to include the surround speakers for an exciting “wraparound”
effect with side-wall imaging. It is particularly effective for recordings which have strong left or right
channel elements in the mix, as these are detected and accentuated by the Panorama process.

using MPEG1, the audio layer-3 filecoding scheme. We call files that have the
“.mp3” file extension “MP3 files.”

has a file extension other than “.mp3.”
• Noises may be heard if you play a nonMP3 file that has the “.mp3” extension.
The limitation of indications
• CD-R physical format should be “ISO
9660”.
• If you record MP3 files using the software
which cannot create a FILE SYSTEM, for
example UDF etc., it is impossible to
playback MP3 files. We therefore
recommend that you use an ISO9660 file
system.
• A single session disc requires MP3 files in
the first track. If there is no MP3 file in the
1st track, it cannot playback MP3 files. If
you wish to playback MP3 files, format all
the data in the disc or use a new one.
• We do not recommend using CD-RW
discs. Please use finished CD-R discs only.
• File names should be named using 8 letters
or less and must incorporate “.mp3”
extension.
e.g. “********.MP3”.
• Do not use special letters such as
“_?!><+*}{`[@ ]:;\/.,” etc.
• Total number of files on the disc should be
less than 200.
• Use 74 minute CD-R discs (650M), Do not
use 80 minute CD-R (700M) software.
Tips on recording MP3
• To enjoy high quality sound, convert to
MP3 files with a sampling frequency of
44.1kHz and a fixed bit rate of 96-320
kbps.
• This DVD receiver requires discs/
recordings to meet certain technical
standards in order to achieve optimal
playback quality. Pre-recorded DVDs are
automatically set to these standards. There
are many different types of recordable disc
formats (including CD-R containing MP3
files).
• Customers should also note that
permission is required in order to
download MP3 files and music from the
Internet. Our company has no right to
grant such permission. Permission should
always be sought from the copyright
owner.
Note
During MP3 playing back, the receiver does not
output the audio signal via the DIGITAL OPTICAL
OUT jack so the audio signal is outputted only via
the ANALOG OUT (L/R) jacks.
Glossary
Extension:
An extension is the last three characters that
divide a file name by a period. The
extension shows the attribution of the file or
the software in which the file was created.
Session:
A session is one section on a disc between
the beginning of data and the end of written
data.
A multi-session disc has more than two
sessions.
Note
Depending on the state of MP3 recording, there may
be sound skips and noise during playback.

About Dolby Pro Logic II
Dolby Pro Logic II consists of the following
two elements.
• MOVIE mode
The Movie mode is for use with stereo television
shows and all programs encoded in Dolby
Surround. The result is enhanced soundfield
directionality that approaches the quality of discrete
5.1-channel sound.
• MUSIC mode
The Music mode is for use with any stereo music
recordings, and provides a wide and deep sound
space. The Music mode includes controls that allow
the sound to be tailored to individual listening
tastes.

Headphone Theater
When you connect your headphone to the
PHONES jack of the receiver, the
HEADPHONE THEATER mode allows you

if you listen to DVD with PLII Music as the sound
field, then change to another function, and then return
to DVD, PLII Music will be applied again. With the
tuner, sound fields are memorised separately for all
preset stations.
z You can identify the encoding format of
programme software by looking at its

logo.
– Dolby Surround encoded programmes are labelled

automatically, and the sound field is turned off.
DRC (Dynamic Range Compression)
Control
With the DVD format you have the
opportunity to hear a programme’s
soundtrack in the most accurate and realistic
presentation possible, thanks to the use of
digital audio technology. However, in
certain instances you may wish to slightly
compress the dynamic range of the audio
output (the difference between the loudest
sounds and the quietest ones) so that you
may listen to a movie at a lower volume
without losing dialogue intelligibility.

Glossary
Chapter
Sections of a picture or a music piece on a
DVD that are smaller than titles. A title is
composed of several chapters. Each chapter
is assigned a chapter number enabling you
to locate the chapter you want.
Dolby Pro Logic II Surround
Dolby Pro Logic II creates five fullbandwidth output channels from twochannel sources. This is done using an
advanced, high-purity matrix surround
decoder that extracts the spatial properties of
the original recording without adding any
new sounds or tonal colorations.
DTS
Dolby Digital
This sound format for movie theaters is
more advanced than Dolby Surround Pro
Logic. In this format, the rear speakers
output stereo sound with an expanded
frequency range and a subwoofer channel
for deep bass is independently provided.
This format is also called “5.1” because the
subwoofer channel is counted as 0.1 channel
(since it functions only when a deep bass
effect is needed). All six channels in this
format are recorded separately to realize
superior channel separation. Furthermore,
since all the signals are processed digitally,
less signal degradation occurs.
Dolby Surround Pro Logic
As one method of decoding Dolby
Surround, Dolby Surround Pro Logic
produces four channels from two-channel
sound. Compared with the former Dolby
Surround system, Dolby Surround Pro Logic
reproduces left-to-right panning more
naturally and localizes sounds more
precisely. To take full advantage of Dolby
Surround Pro Logic, you should have one
pair of rear speakers and a centre speaker.
The rear speakers output monaural sound.
62GB
Digital audio compression technology that
the Digital Theater Systems, Inc. developed.
This technology conforms to 5.1-channel
surround. The rear channel is stereo and
there is discrete subwoofer channel in this
format. DTS provides the same 5.1 discrete
channels of high quality digital audio. The
good channel separation is realized because
all the channel data is recorded discrete and
processed in digital.
DVD
A disc that contains up to 8 hours of moving
pictures even though its diameter is the
same as a CD.
The data capacity of a single-layer and
single-sided DVD, at 4.7 GB (Giga Byte), is
7 times that of a CD. Furthermore, the data
capacity of a dual-layer and single-sided
DVD is 8.5 GB, a single-layer and doublesided DVD 9.4 GB, and a dual-layer and
double-sided DVD 17 GB.
The picture data uses the MPEG 2 format,
one of the worldwide standards of digital
compression technology. The picture data is
compressed to about 1/40 of its original size.
The DVD also uses the variable rate coding
technology that changes the data to be
allocated according to the status of the
picture.
The audio data is recorded in Dolby Digital
as well as in PCM, allowing you to enjoy
more real audio presence.
Furthermore, various advanced functions
such as the multi-angle, multilingual, and
Parental Control functions are provided with
the DVD.
Multi-angle function
Region Code
This receiver is used to protect copyrights. A
region number is allocated on each DVD
system or DVD disc according to the sales
region. Each region code is shown on the
receiver as well as on the disc packaging.
The receiver can play the discs that match
its region code. The receiver can also play
discs with the “ ” mark. Even when the
region code is not shown on the DVD, the
region limit may still be activated.
ALL
Various angles, or viewpoints of the video
camera for a scene are recorded on some
DVDs.
Multilingual function
Several languages for the sound or subtitles
in a picture are recorded on some DVDs.
Parental Control
A function of the DVD to limit playback of
the disc by the age of the users according to
the limitation level in each area. The
limitation varies from disc to disc; when it is
activated, playback is completely prohibited,
violent scenes are skipped or replaced with
other scenes and so on.
Playback Control (PBC)
On a VIDEO CD with PBC (playback
control) functions, the menu screens,
moving pictures and still pictures are
divided into sections called “scenes.”
Title
The longest sections of a picture or music
feature on a DVD, movie, etc., in video
software, or the entire album in audio
software. Each title is assigned a title
number enabling you to locate the title you
want.
Track
Sections of a picture or a music piece on a
CD or VIDEO CD. Each track is assigned a
track number enabling you to locate the
track you want.
Additional Information
Signals encoded on VIDEO CDs (Version
2.0) to control playback.
By using menu screens recorded on VIDEO
CDs with PBC functions, you can enjoy
playing simple interactive programmes,
programmes with search functions, and so
on.

63GB
VIDEO CD
A compact disc that contains moving
pictures.
The picture data uses the MPEG 1 format,
one of the worldwide standards of digital
compression technology. The picture data is
compressed to about 1/140 of its original
size. Consequently, a 12 cm VIDEO CD can
contain up to 74 minutes of moving pictures.
VIDEO CDs also contain compact audio
data. Sounds outside the range of human
hearing are compressed while the sounds we
can hear are not compressed. VIDEO CDs
can hold 6 times the audio information of
conventional audio CDs.
There are 2 versions of VIDEO CDs.
• Version 1.1: You can play only moving
pictures and sounds.
• Version 2.0: You can play high-resolution
still pictures and enjoy PBC functions.
This receiver conforms to both versions.
