HUMBLE INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT Job Description Geographic Mapping Technician Page 1 of 3 Reports to: School/Department: Pay Grade: Wage/hour status: Work Days: Created/revised: Assistant Director of Transportation Transportation Manual Trades/Hourly Pay Grade 6 Non-Exempt 261 April 2016 Primary Purpose: Provides accurate information in maps, technology, Global Positioning System (GPS) tools to help advance the efficiency of the Transportation Department in the duties of transporting students. Develop and maintain maps that provide up-to-date streets for all areas serviced by the district. Qualifications: Education/Certification: High School Diploma or GED Associate’s degree in Information Technology or equivalent from an accredited college or university recognized by the US Department of Education or graduate with Information Technology or closely related field from an accredited technical school preferred Maintain valid Texas Class “A or B” CDL Driver’s License with “P” or “S’ endorsements Special Knowledge/Skills: Knowledge of Transfinder routing software and best practices. Knowledge of map making, address points, parcel points, streets, and GIS. Knowledge of State Reporting data needed, and how to compile it throughout the year. Knowledge of District and Transportation goals and guidelines as they apply to routing Knowledge of the geography of Northeast Harris County and Humble ISD schools and boundaries in particular Skill in computers and software programs, with emphasis on technical support Skill in operating MS Office (Word, Excel, Access, Powerpoint, Publisher) and other software such as TransFinder, ArcGis and ArchiCad Skill in developing, designing, or creating new applications, ideas, relationships, systems, or products, including artistic contributions Skill in documentation and data compilation for Transportation needs Skill in providing guidance and expert advice to management or other groups on technical, systems, or process-related topics Skill in gathering/organizing/analyzing/interpreting data, utilizing various techniques, applying concepts to assist in formulating conclusions and developing recommendations and solutions Skill in providing, utilizing, and understanding complex and technical information and explain effectively in a clear and understanding manner to a variety of stakeholders Ability to analyze information and evaluating results to choose the best solution and solve problems Ability to drive a school bus route as the needs of the business dictates. Ability manage multiple complex tasks simultaneously and independently to meet deadlines. Ability to maintain effective working relationships with District staff, outside organizations, elected officials, and the general public. Experience: Minimum of three years technical experience in actual surveying or mapping of geographic area routes or roads or comparable on a large scale preferred Experience driving a school bus Major Responsibilities and Duties: 1. Perform mapping work and the updating of maps in order to ensure accuracy, the inclusion of new and/or changed information, and compliance with rules and regulations. 2. Produce and update overlay maps in order to show school zoned boundaries, bus stop locations, and future growth areas for district on routing maps. 3. Compare topographical features and contour lines with images from aerial photographs, old maps, and other reference materials in order to verify the accuracy of their identification. 4. Check all layers of maps in order to ensure accuracy, identifying and marking errors and making corrections. 5. Redraw and correct maps, such as revising parcel maps to reflect tax code area changes, using information from official records and surveys. 6. Answer questions and provide information to the public and to staff members regarding assessment maps, surveys, boundaries, easements, property ownership, roads, zoning, and similar matters. 7. Train, guide, and coordinate activities of staff members and workers in duties such as route mapping, the use of computerized routing equipment, and the interpretation of source documents. 8. Perform special projects as assigned by management on a timely basis. 9. Provide technical support to staff members on various software platforms. 10. Operate buses and other vehicles as needed Records, Reports, and Correspondence 1. Prepare correspondence, forms, reports, manuals, and presentations. 2. Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents as required. Communication 1. Compile, maintain, file, and present all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents, required in transportation area. 3. Comply with applicable personnel policies. Other 1. Maintain confidentiality of privileged and sensitive information when received and distributed to appropriate designees as directed by the Director of Transportation. 2. Attend professional growth activities to keep abreast of innovations related to position. 3. Maintain an organized work environment. 4. Perform other duties as assigned.
