On a Poetic Note Volunteer Opportunities What Our Colors Mean to Me The band was playing Sousa as the flag went passing by and folks stood at attention on this hot day in July. The stars in that great banner somehow represent us all, documenting the valor of all those who met the call. White stripes represent our hopes, recognition of the past, a purity of mission, which will be fulfilled at last. The red then, must be the blood, blood shed for us and others, all those who’ve stood together . . . our sisters and our brothers. Blue is for our devotion to one nation, under God, for all of us together in this land our fathers trod. Our colors mean that to me this day of celebration, valuing what has been done to bring forth Our Great Nation. Clark Crouch, Poet “To be loved but not known is comforting but superficial. To be known and not loved is our greatest fear. But to be fully known and truly loved is what we need more than anything . . . It liberates us from pretense, humbles us out of our self-righteousness, and fortifies us for any difficulty life can throw at us.” We need YOU!! If you’ve got great muscles… We have a lot of events that need people to set up and then put away chairs, tables, etc. If you’re a great cook, or would like to be part of a fun team…we need more people to help with all of our food service events. Please contact Jean Jespersen, Volunteer Coordinator. The community service organization is geared for nearly everyone in the age bracket of 55 to 100+ (yes, they even have a member or two nearly 100 years old.) Northshore is a nonprofit business offering a multitude of services and activities including: ballroom dancing, quilting classes, day trips in buses, caregiver support groups, counseling services, adult day care, computer classes, digital camera classes, art classes, chess and bridge clubs, card playing groups, a gym with fitness classes, as well as noon lunch available for only $3. Northshore Senior Center envisions a community where everyone leads full, healthy, and inspired lives. Their mission is to promote healthy aging and well-being in our community through programs, services, resources and civic engagement. What does it cost to give it a try? Glad you asked. It is dirt cheap, only $30 for a full year membership. That works out to be less than $3 per month. More than half the activities are free, the rest are offered at reasonable prices. Submitted by Ed Lincoln—longtime community resident The Health & Wellness Center Do you want to feel better about your entire body? Health & Wellness has the whole package. Tootsie’s Parlor is a mini-spa that is friendly and easy to use. Juli Schilling, and Jody Orr will shampoo, cut, wave, color, and style women’s hair. Men can get hair and clipper cuts as well as beard trims. Juli has been a vital part of H&W for five years and really knows your hair needs. Through massage, Jan Anderson, LMP, will help you relax, relieve pain, and feel more vital. Massage can also improve your posture and coordination, ease your breathing, and enhance restful sleep. But that isn’t all. If your feet are giving you problems, Judy Ware, LNP, and Stephanie Thorne will assess what is going on and even include a foot soak and nail trim. Drusilla Myer, H & W’s Reflexology expert, provides another valuable service. Using hand, finger, and thumb techniques, she can locate pressure points that will clear congestion, reduce stress, increase relaxation, and bring the body into balance. These services are available Monday through Friday, but it’s a good idea to make an appointment—especially on pie day. The good news is that you don’t have to be a member of NSC. Just call 425-488-4821 for hair, massage, and reflexology appointments and 425-486-4564 for foot care. When you let the great people at Tootsie’s Parlor help you, you’ll feel good from head to toe. Just a Thought . . . One of the great things about a place like our Senior Center is that it makes us feel part of a community. Reaching the point when we can retire from many of our earlier activities has a lot of benefits for many of us— freedom to travel and opportunities to pursue hobbies and develop new interests. One negative, though, can be the feeling of no longer having a place, of not belonging. We want and need to feel that we still have value and something to offer. Being part of a vital, active community like NSC is vital to our physical and mental health. And, in case you didn’t notice, that word ends in “unity.” Of course, we don’t agree on a lot of things, but we probably do agree about the value of our Center. Just a thought. Gloria Campbell Keep your eye on the ball, your ear to the ground, your nose to the grindstone, your shoulder to the wheel. Now try to work in that position. That and This Bits and Pieces Dear Members: If you have noticed that we are locking up more areas of our center such as the walk-in cooler, particular storage areas, etc., it is because we have experienced a loss of items in recent months. We regret having to resort to these measures, however in order to ensure we operate our facility as efficiently as possible, this has become necessary. The center operates on a regulated budget—therefore it’s critical that we are cost-efficient, protecting our products and equipment the best we can. Thank you!
