Ralph Vaull Starr
Well, it is certainly hard to believe that we have completed another school year! It seems like yesterday the school year began with much anticipation and excitement and now, the time has come to
close another year and say good-bye to our wonderful senior class and welcome the newest members of our IB Family...the IB Class of 2017.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank each of you for making this year so wonderful and
exciting. IB is a very special program, not only because of the world class curriculum and all that it
brings, but also because of the parents, students, and teachers who are the real heart of all that we
do. I am so proud of all of the wonderful things that we have accomplished this year, and I am looking forward to next year with great anticipation.
Speaking of next year, be sure to check out all of the information in this newsletter. Your teachers
have included their summer assignments and any other pertinent information you will need to
prepare for the 2013-2014 school year. Please pay close attention to these assignments and their
deadlines. It is important that we all start the year in the same place academically. If you have any
questions or concerns about your assignments for next year, please do not hesitate to call us.
I would like to take this opportunity to say to the IB Class of 2013…..CONGRATULATIONS AND
WE ARE SO VERY PROUD OF YOU!. These last four years have been a wonderful journey for all of
us, and I am certain that the classes of 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017 will continue the tradition of excellence that the class of 2013 so clearly personified. You have left your mark in our hearts! We wish
you only the very best!!

look forward to sharing this exciting journey with each of you. As some of our “family” moves on to
the next steps in their lives, we look forward to your future with us. Have a great summer and
come in August ready to enjoy your progress and success!
I hope you all have wonderful and exciting summer! As always, please don’t hesitate to contact us if
you have any questions or concerns.

STELLAR SENIORS
It’s a first in the pool for Bay County, as Rutherford’s Chris Jackson has
won the 2A one meter diving state championship at the YMCA Aquatic
Center in Orlando. Chris racked up 447 points with his dives, some 8
points ahead of the second place diver. Chris, a senior, is hoping to parlay
this success into a college scholarship and he dreams of an Olympic berth.

FRESHMAN REGISTRATION
Incoming freshman students need to complete their Registration Packet and bring it in to the IB Office or Guidance no later
than JUNE 10th. Please be sure to bring ALL needed paperwork for Guidance to complete registration, to
include birth certificate, social security card, shot records and 2 proofs of residence. (copies can be made in the IB Office)
For questions regarding classes, please contact Mrs. Mills, IB Guidance Counselor at 767-4509.
SURFING FOR SCHOLARSHIPS
The Internet is becoming a popular vehicle for anyone seeking financial aid to attend college. Most of the web
sites we tested invite the visitor to fill out a “profile” that then matches the student to scholarship programs nationwide.
Most also offer a glossary, links to other sites and information about avoiding scholarship scams. Many sites are heavy
on commercial promotions and offer to link visitors to financial services institutions, so surf with
caution! Here are some of the better addresses:
Scholarships.com (www.scholarships.com) is a well-designed easy-to-use site that provides a free scholarship
search and financial aid information. Creating the student profile is relatively easy, and this information is compared to a
database of more than $6,000,000 in college scholarship awards. Also included is information on student loans and
grants, financial aid forms and more.
FastAID (www.fastaid.com) provides a step-by-step guide to applying for scholarships; tips on completing
applications, writing essays, and letters; and a bibliography. Setting up the student profile was little cumbersome and
time consuming, and the design is somewhat distracting.
The Scholarship Resource Network Express (www. srnexpress.com) also offers a fairly easy-to-use form for
setting up your profile, and provides a large list of possible scholarships.
FastWeb (www.fastweb.com) is an easy to use site which gives each student the option of creating a
personal profile to receive a list of exactly those scholarships matching his/her skills and interests. The matching
scholarships can be organized by type, deadline, dollar amount, etc.
NOTE TO RISING SENIORS:
Students/parents who have not yet completed the “College and Scholarship Reference Letter”
packets are urged to return them to Mrs. Mills as soon as possible. (They were distributed in the Spanish and
Latin classes in the spring.)
These comprehensive packets are a vital piece of the college/scholarship application process. IB teachers refer to this information frequently when asked to write letters of recommendation.
Faculty members often ask to see pictures to put names with faces when voting on scholarship and award
nominees.
Also, Upcoming Seniors! The September 30th deadline for applying to Florida public universities is an important date to mark on your calendar for Fall. You should begin the school year with your college choices
narrowed to a short list for application purposes. I will meet with each of you after the opening of school to
begin the process. This is an exciting time!!
Mrs. Mills, IB Guidance Counselor
JUNIORS
Remember that this is the semester to take the SAT/ACT. It is very important to have test scores on file so that you can
begin the college admissions process as soon as we start school next Fall.
REMEMBER, our deadline for the Florida schools is around September 30 each year.
The last test date for SAT is June 1st
The last test date for ACT is June 8th
If goals are not met from this year’s test results, additional testing could be done in the first semester of the senior year.

a parking permit application and contract. This must be renewed every year. When you return

permit will be $25.
A student must have an overall GPA of 2.0 or higher to apply. Students who have deficiencies will
not receive a RHS Parking Permit. Other factors listed in the contract may also prevent the issuing

IB Teachers Represent too….
We had two “Teachers of the Week” during the month of
November 2012 and another one in March of 2013!
Congratulations Beverly Fraser, Karen Harrell, and Jeaneen Boutwell!
Doral Teacher of the Week—November 5, 2012
Beverly Fraser, Communications Technology Academy, Rutherford High School
After 30 years of teaching and many awards for student productions, Mrs. Fraser still inspires students and is well
loved by those who join the Communications Technology Academy. As stated by one of her students, "She is a
wonderful teacher. She has made my high school years very bearable and she teaches us all these video making
techniques in such a cool way. Sometimes she uses a funny Italian accent. She has made an impact on all the
students she teaches. We all leave with the knowledge of how to make some cool videos for WRAM and other
news shows."
WJHG/John Lee Nissan Golden Apple Teacher of the Week—November 22, 2012
Karen Harrell, Math Teacher and CAS Coordinator
As head of Rutherford's math department, Mrs. Harrell helps direct math instruction for not only her students,
but every student at Rutherford. "Students don't learn the same way that they used to. It's not the same type of
classroom. So we have to be learning all the time and be ready to present to students math content in a way they
will learn it best," said Mrs. Harrell. Students say it's her patience in the classroom that sets her apart. "She has
helped me through math. I am one who has struggled a lot in math. She has really helped me and other students,"
said Katie Hyland. For Katie, having Mrs. Harrell boosted her math confidence, and allowed her to dream big. She
hopes to become a pediatrician one day. "The biggest thing I like to do is give students opportunities for success
in my classroom. It's a safe environment to be wrong. A lot of students are afraid of being wrong. In my class
they can say what they think, answer questions the way they think, and they are not going to be berated or put
down if they are wrong," said Mrs. Harrell.
WJHG/John Lee Nissan Golden Apple Teacher of the Week—March 14, 2013
Jeaneen Boutwell, Social Studies
Students and colleagues alike say longtime teacher Mrs. Jeaneen Boutwell has the perfect personality for teaching
high school: firm when she needs to be and funny enough to be memorable.
How do you get high schoolers interested in history? Talk up the drama. "I give them the good gossipy things
about the different kings and queens or the dictators and they enjoy that. It makes history alive, it's what it's all
about," said Jeaneen Boutwell.
Mrs. Boutwell was nominated by not one, not two, but three students who share her love for history. They say
her story-telling skills help set her apart. "The stories are what makes it easy to remember, knowing that that person exists like we do and we are all human and we all make errors," said Olivia Meadows, one of the students
who nominated Mrs. Boutwell. "She makes connections from the past to things that have recently happened," said
Niral Patel, another one of the students who nominated Mrs. Boutwell
Amidst the posters of historical figures, M&M memorabilia makes an unexpected appearance. "Almost all the
memorabilia in the classroom has been given to me by students." It's an historical documentation of another kind,
proof of appreciation for a teacher who's making a lasting impression on her students. "She is a very challenging
