Coming On Our Knees
Sing or Pray:
“Awake, my soul, and sing. Of Him who died for thee, And hail Him as thy matchless King.
Through all eternity.” - Crown him with many crowns – Matthew Bridges
Connecting with One Another:
Have you ever witnessed (on TV or in person) any coronation? Talk through some of the
experiences and things you noticed that stood out to you personally
Listening to the Word:
Read aloud John 19:1-15
John wants us to see and witness the coronation of king Jesus.
Looking at verses 1-3
• If you were sitting there, witnessing this, how would this make you feel? Would you see
it as a coronation like John did?
• Does this seem fair and just? Does this seem like a coronation or is this mockery, abuse
and torture?
Read Genesis 3:18-19
Thorns and sweet of the brow are images of the curse of sin. Our king, at his coronation, chose
to not take a crown of gold but chose to take the crown of thorns, the curse of sin upon of his
brow so that our curse would be lifted.
•
•
Why the curse, what do we deserve for our sin?
What would you feel should be God’s response?
Read from Isaiah 53:4-6
“By His wounds, we are healed”. Jesus fulfills the ancient prophecy by the way we will be
healed. Through His wounds.
•
•
How is this counter culture to the way we see Kings and saviors typically?
How does his wounds bring us healing?
Look at verses 13-16 of John 19
The Jewish leaders shouted “we have no king, but Ceaser” even though God continued to
remind Israel that he was king. The Jewish Leaders knew that.
•
•
•
•
•
•
What could lead the Jewish officials (Chief Priests) to say this? And who was Ceaser to
them?
Who has authority over you in your life?
How often do our actions say “I have no king but Ceaser”?
What is personally pulling you at the moment? Asking for your total allegiance,
enslaving you and demanding everything of you?
How can the things that are sometimes good things become ultimate’s?
What is it that has slowly taken over part of you? That you slowly but surely cease to be
you? That you are now a shell of what God made you to be.
“King Jesus is the only savior that if you gain him will satisfy him, and if you fail him will
forgive you.” Tim Keller
We have to go back to the coronation of Jesus. That he was pierced for our transgression.
•
•
•
Does this sound like a king that enslaves you? Or a king that frees you and heals
you? And how?
Think about the things above that rule your life. Will it satisfy you? Does it have the
power to save or forgive you when (not if) you fail?
How is God calling you to respond?
Kingship demands that all parts of our life are laid before the kingship of Jesus.
•
•
What areas of your daily life do you deny his kingship (as a believer)?
What are some of the discrepancies in your life between actions on Sunday and the
other six days you live out?
If time Read from the book of Revelation 5:8-12
Responding in Prayer
Pray that king Jesus would set us free from the things we have made king over our lives. To
show us, to forgive us, to heal us. Pray for the specific things your group has mentioned.
“Awake, my soul, and sing. Of Him who died for thee, And hail Him as thy matchless King.
Through all eternity” Amen.
