WASHINGTON: David Letterman’s ‘‘stupid human
tricks’’ and Top 10 lists are
being vaulted into the ranks
of cultural acclaim as the
comedian receives this year’s
Kennedy Centre Honours
with rock band Led Zeppelin
and three other artists.
Stars from New York, Hollywood and the music world
gathered yesterday in Washington to salute the comedian
and the band, along with Dustin Hoffman, Chicago bluesman Buddy Guy and ballerina Natalia Makarova.
The honours are the nation’s highest award for those
who influenced American
culture through the arts. President Barack Obama will
host the honourees at the
White House before they are
saluted by fellow performers
in a show to be broadcast on
Boxing Day on CBS.
Meryl Streep introduced
the honourees during a dinner at the US State Department and noted Letterman
had surpassed his mentor,
Johnny Carson, in sustaining
the longest late-night television career.
Stephen
Colbert
and
Jimmy Kimmel joined in
celebrating his influence on
many other comedians.
‘‘I knew Johnny, and I
loved Johnny. Johnny was
beyond reproach,’’ Colbert

Jackman, Crowe on song
LOS ANGELES: Hugh Jackman
says he and Russell Crowe bonded
over stories in the press while filming Les Miserables.
The two are starring in the new
musical adaptation. Although they
have been portrayed as feuding by
some, the actors actually share a
close friendship.
‘‘My publicist sent me something
in the press about how I enjoy beating him up.
‘‘I sent it to him and we both had a
laugh about it,’’ Jackman said.
Les Miserables has
demanded a lot of
vocal
dedication
from the cast for difficult songs.
Although JackHugh Jackman
man has sung before
on stage, musical theatre was not
something he had always pictured himself doing.
‘‘I’m a bit of an ignoramus
when it comes to musical theatre.
I always feel like an actor who
stumbled into it,’’ he explained.
Hefner engaged again
LOS ANGELES: Hugh Hefner and
his former fiancee Crystal Harris
are engaged once more.
The 86-year-old Playboy founder
and the 26-year-old former Playboy
Playmate of the Month were due to
marry in June 2011, but she had
second thoughts about the nuptials
and called it off days before she
was due to walk down the aisle.
TMZ reports that the pair will tie
the knot at the Playboy Mansion
on New Year’s Eve.
She moved back into the estate
earlier this year. She
apparently needed
time to grow up and
find her sense of independence before committing to marriage.

Radar Online says
Harris will re-use the party
favours that would have been part
of the cancelled 2011 affair.
It also claims that she will recycle last year’s wedding dress.
Hefner has been married only
twice before.

Thriller
turns 30
LOS ANGELES: Thirty
years ago, Michael Jackson
made music history with
the release of Thriller.
The album – which produced the hits Thriller, Beat
It, Billie Jean, Wanna Be
Startin Something and more
– became and remains the
best-selling album in US history with 29 million copies
sold after its release on November 30, 1982.
In an interview with
CNN, famous guitarist and
music producer Eddie Van
Halen reminisced about his
Beat It collaboration with
Jackson, a favour he did for
Quincy Jones while the rest
of his Van Halen bandmates
were out of town.
‘‘It seems like yesterday,
doesn’t it?’’ he said to the
network.
‘‘It would have been fun to
work with him again.’’
Songwriter Siedah Garrett, who worked with Jackson on his next album Bad,
said Thriller was the first
time she started looking at
who wrote the songs – not
just who sang them.
‘‘It was like the only other
record that I had this feeling
about where I could drop the
needle anywhere and listen
to it from front to back over
and over again was Off the
Wall,’’ she said.
Twain back
on stage after
eight years
LOS ANGELES: Singer
Shania Twain took to the
stage for the first time in
eight years at the weekend
to kick off her 24-month
Las Vegas residency at
Caesars Palace.
The country singer went
on hiatus in 2004 after losing
her voice to the condition
dysphonia, but she showed
no sign of vocal problems as
she dazzled the packed
crowd during a 90-minute,
18-song set.
Clad in a lacy black bodysuit, she rode in on a highflying bike and opened with
I’m Gonna Getcha Good,
later fighting back tears as
she told her fans: ‘‘You’re
going to get me all emotional and my eyelashes are
going to fall off.’’
Twain , 47, whose sister
Carrie Ann works for her as
a back-up singer, made a
number of costume changes,
eventually putting on a pair
of pink cowboy boots to perform I Ain’t No Quitter atop
a black horse and Still The
One on the back of a white
beast, before closing with
Man! I Feel Like A Woman.
‘‘It’s been a lot of years for
me since I’ve been here,’’
she told the audience.
‘‘I realise what I’ve been
missing, thanks to you.’’
