since they were not giving, they stopped coming. That gift almost
killed that church.
Stewardship starts with noticing that you are important. We at New
Horizon cannot be all that God wants us to be unless you are here.
Stewardship continues by noticing that you have resources to share.
Time, enthusiasm and involvement are just as much resources as our
dollars are. We affirm that everyone the Holy Spirit draws to become
involved here has spiritual gifts vital for our continued ministry.
Stewardship continues with investment. New Horizon moves from, ―a
church I go to when I feel like it,‖ to ―MY church,‖ the church that God
has given me to. Since New Horizon is MY church, I will support it with
my dollars. Sure, we have a mortgage. Sure, we have programs and
staff. And yes, we need money to continue to do what we dream of
doing. But I‘ve got to tell you - if I have a choice between your
presence and involvement versus your checkbook, I will choose your
presence and involvement here every time. You are more important
than any program we have. Besides, I know that since we tend to vote
with our dollars, if you are involved here then sooner or later you will
invest here.
The real problem with identifying stewardship solely with money is
that it squeezes all the joy out of giving and limits our participation in
God‘s plans to the status of monthly utility bills. The picture painted by
the New Testament is that God chooses to use us to proclaim and live
the Gospel. We get to be the ones God uses to help change our world.
This is more than a once a month obligation; this is partnering with
the One that raised Jesus from the dead to continue Jesus‘ ministry in
our neck of the woods. That calls for a lifetime of grateful response.
We have another word for that kind of response. We call it
―discipleship‖ and it calls for loving God with our whole heart, mind
and strength. It‘s also a source of deep joy.
Come with us as we dare to dream what God can do with us.
Prayerfully consider how God is calling you to be involved. I promise I
won‘t make you do the Interlude Dance - really I won‘t. But I will invite
you to join with me and everyone else at New Horizon to participate in
all that God would have us do. See you in church!
Last Saturday I went to my first UNI football
game. Oddly enough, this was the first college
football game I can remember going to in
many years. Jonathan is the only one of my
three sons who elected to stay in marching
band, and any college game I might be
interested enough in to drive 41/2 hours to
see is probably on TV anyway. I don‘t know what I expected. Oh, the
Panthers won handily, and the band‘s halftime show was great
( I‘ve got the pictures to prove it, Jonathan is standing on the 30yard line.) But what surprised me was the crowd in the stands. My
undergraduate work was at San Jose State University, a large urban
downtown campus. Then, the only people who went to the games
were the students, and perhaps the parents. At the time, downtown
San Jose was not somewhere you wanted to be after dark, so who
wanted to go to a football game there? Instead of a student/parentonly crowd, this was like a high school football game. On the bench
in front of us were grandparents, parents and small kids. All in UNI
purple and, as far as I could tell, part of the same family. We had a
great time!
Looking back, I don‘t know why I was so surprised. UNI is a big
part of Cedar Falls and the football team is on a roll, so it makes
sense that the whole community would come out to support the
team. On the other hand, my own preconceived notions, based on
my own experience decades before almost got in the way of me
enjoying the game as much as I could have. Who knew you were
supposed to jangle your car keys at kickoff, or point the way down
field when they got a first down? (Of course, I‘m not sure if I am
ready for that Interlude Dance thing they do - check out the video
at http: //www.youtube.com/watch?v=0cuS_31zJ6U - oh to be a
college kid again.)
Preconceived notions based on past experiences have a
tendency to blind us to the larger picture. Stewardship is a classic
example. (I can hear the groans already.) This is the time of year
Paul

supposed to remind you of our mortgage payments, and preach Family Fun Night…..
is planned for Sunday, October 9, at Ditmars' Orchard, 5:00pm ONCE on stewardship. But stewardship isn‘t about money, at least
8:00pm.
We will enjoy a hayrack ride, bonfire, corn maze and
primarily. I had a friend who was a pastor at a small church in rural
West Virginia. Someone hit the lottery and gave the church a ton of dinner. The cost is $10 per person, and we need a minimum of 20
money. Everybody else thought the church had enough money, and people to attend. Check the bulletin for more information.

September Session Highlights
The treasurer‘s report was received. General contributions for
the month of August were $22,437 and general expenses were
$28,004, leaving a deficit of $5,567. Mortgage contributions for
August were $4,225, and the mortgage payment was $9,518,
leaving a deficit of $5,293. The session discussed the need to
remind the congregation to continue to make their mortgage and
general fund pledges. For the first time, the church‘s total expenses
were greater than total contributions, and this is not a good trend.
The Administration committee reported that a plan needs to be
established for when Rev. Masters is out of town. The doors have
been left unlocked on some Sunday mornings when Paul has not
been there to lock them. Bob Karcher volunteered to act as a
liaison to guest pastors and make sure that the doors are locked at
the end of services on days when Paul is gone. The Fellowship
committee was charged with writing a ―kitchen upkeep‖ checklist
which will guide groups on what needs to be cleaned in the kitchen
after an event is held.
The Buildings and Grounds committee reported that one of the
air-conditioning units was damaged by a lightning strike. An
insurance claim has been submitted and the unit has been
replaced. The recent hail storm caused upwards of $80,000 worth
of damage to the roof, gutters, etc. We have not gotten a final
report from the insurance company, so repair work has not yet
begun. The session voted to approve the request of a local hunter
to take part in the Council Bluffs archery deer hunting program on
New Horizon‘s agricultural land. The farmer who farms the land
gave his permission for this hunting to take place once the crop has
been harvested. The church will have no liability concerns as it is a
program sponsored by the city of Council Bluffs and all hunters
must pass a special safety class before they are licensed to
participate in it.
The Worship committee reported that the ―Hanging of the
Greens‖ holiday decorating has been scheduled for Sunday,
November 27, after the 11:00am service. New Horizon will once
again be hosting the Council Bluffs Community Christmas concert. It
will be held on Sunday, December 10, with performances at 4:00pm
and 7:00pm. Christmas Eve services have been scheduled for
4:30pm and 10:30pm. Christmas Day and New Year‘s Day falls on
Sunday, we will only have one service at 10:00am.
The Christian Ed committee reported that they were planning a
fall family event to be held at Ditmar‘s Orchard sometime in the next
few months. A date has not been set. The family pool night held in
August had a good turnout and was very successful.
The Mission committee approved the following donations: $400
to the Children‘s Square Spiritual Life program, $1000 to Interfaith
Response, $672 to the Food Bank of the Heartland‘s ―Backpack‖
food program, and $93.26 to purchase spare clothing for use at
College View Elementary School. Four bags of school supplies were
given to Bloomer, Roosevelt and College View. The ―Tool and
Blanket‖ collection for Church World Service will be taken on
October 16. A Habitat for Humanity work day will be held on
October 2011
October 29. New Horizon is delivering Meals on Wheels in October.
A ―Trunk or Treat‖ event for local children will be held on October
30, and a ―Thank God the Flood Wasn‘t Worse‖ dinner for all local
Presbyterian churches is being planned for November.
The Fellowship committee reported that the September 11
potluck was a success. The IWCC Tailgate potluck is planned for
October 2. A dinner theater event is being explored for November.
The Communications committee reported that they are continuing
to publicize and document church events on our Facebook page.
The outside church sign needs to be updated more frequently to
publicize events. The kids‘ activities bags (used by kids during
church services) will be restocked and need to be more available to
kids. There will be more church information folders made. These
folders and other church brochures need to be available in the
narthex for visitors.
Calling all Kids...
Just a reminder that all of the New Horizon kids, as well as their
family and friends are invited to attend our Sunday School and
Wednesday night youth activities. Sunday School classes meet each
Sunday morning at 10:00am, and there are classes available for
preschool through high school. Wednesday night activities kick off at
5:30 with bell and chimer choir rehearsals. Kids‘ Club, for elementary
aged kids, meets at 6:00pm, as does the Break Out group for junior
and senior high. A family style meal is served at 6:45pm. We hope
to see as many kids there as possible!
Calling All Cooks!
We are still looking for volunteers to help prepare meals for the
Wednesday night youth program. Volunteers would need to prepare
a meal for approximately 35 people to be served around 6:45pm
each Wednesday night. If you would like to donate food or money to
purchase food, but are unable to prepare the meal itself, we would
welcome that as well. Look for the sign-up sheet in the Narthex, or
contact Mindy Brewer at 712-545-3315 for more information.
Deacons Report
The most recent Deacons meeting was held on September 7.
One of the Deacons‘ duties is to deliver flowers from Sunday services
to members of the New Horizon family, and flowers were delivered
every Sunday in September. Arranging for home communion is
another duty of the Deacons. While it is normally thought to be a
service for shut-ins, it is available to anyone. Amanda Petersen is in
charge of contacting those who want to be served home communion.
If you would like to receive this service but have not been contacted,
please call the church office at 712-323-7129 or Amanda Petersen.

Mariners Report
Presbyterian Women
Those at the September Mariners meeting were favored with a religious
music program by the Risen Son, ―Golden Corral‖ singing group. The
choir is directed by Lowell Burkam and accompanied by his wife Dixie. Joe
Krumenacher is one of the singers in this group. A short business meeting
followed the program. Birthdays and anniversaries were acknowledged,
the final cargo committee report was approved, and an announcement was
made about the September, October Household Items and Bake Sale.
On September 1, New Horizon‘s
Presbyterian Women met for a
luncheon, provided by Mary Circle, and
a presentation by Abbie Crawford of
the ―Iowa Cookie Crumbs.‖ This group
is part of the ―Treat the Troops‖
project founded by Jeanette Cram in
the early 1990's. The goal of the
project is to provide treats to members
of the American military who are
deployed overseas, and to let them
know they are being remembered by
those back home. There are ―cookie
crumb‖ groups in 35 states, but
Crawford‘s is the only one in Nebraska
or Iowa.
On August 16, the Iowa Cookie
Crumbs packed 8,580 cookies, which
is 10 dozen cookies per box. There
are three teams in the local group, in
which many New Horizon women
participate; who take turns baking and
packing boxes of cookies. Each box
contains snacks, comfort items and
letters of support along with the
cookies. Cookie Crumb members have
received letters from the American
military personnel that prove that
these packages from home are greatly
appreciated and that they do boost
morale.
The October 6 Presbyterian Women
meeting will feature a program with
Cathy Born discussing her trip to
Morocco, and Laurel Sellers discussing
her work in the Peace Corp. All New
Horizon women are invited to attend.
Sunday School - It’s Not Just for Kids
Drop into the Adult Sunday School Class in the Hearth Room at
10:00am on Sundays for a cup of coffee and interesting Biblical
discussion. This fall‘s study is on ―Tradition and Wisdom,‖ and will
begin with the Proverbs, move to Ecclesiastes and finish with the
Song of Solomon. The second unit, beginning at the end of October,
will focus on the wisdom of Jesus in Matthew. Anyone is welcome
one Sunday or every Sunday---no homework required!

about tracking down a Nazi war criminal in East Berlin in 1966. Afterward,
the group went to dinner at Uncle Buck‘s. At dinner, there was a lively
discussion of what occurred in the movie and whether the mission was ever
really accomplished. Check out the bulletin for upcoming Movie Group

Reflections from Synod School
Last month Zelda Gutha and Jan Pellant reported on their impressions
of this year‘s Synod School. This month the other two who attended, Ernie
Gutha and Teena Kern will report.
Teena Kern says, ―My fondest memories of this
event will be the bright fourth, fifth and sixth graders to
whom I taught science. The day we studied Malawi, one
girl knew where to find it on the map of Africa and told
how their church had been collecting money for
mosquito nets. Every day they came with enthusiasm,
wanting to know, ‗What do we get to blow up today?‘
That is because we created an eruption of a volcano when we studied
Guatemala. A boy named Peter was thrilled with everything and was such a
polite and helpful ten-year old. He is certain he is going to become a
scientist when he grows up.‖
Ernie Gutha says, ‖For me Synod School was a familyfriendly, continuing-education event. The discussions
among members of the classes ensured me of the positive
search brothers and sisters in Christ have as they look
into the past, walk in the present and venture into the
future.‖

Iowa Western Tailgate
Each year since we moved to our new facility, we have hosted a
tailgate potluck for Iowa Western Community College students. It has
been a great opportunity to meet our neighbors and show support for
the school. This year, the tailgate is being held on Sunday, October 2.
The NHPC Men‘s Group will be grilling meat, and we are asking for
people to bring side dishes and desserts. We have invited the cross
country teams, as well as the presidential scholars, which translates into
approximately 55 students as well as their sponsors/coaches. This
means we will need lots of food! Please plan on attending and bringing
a few dishes to share - food should be at church by 4:30pm on October
2. We will also need lots of kitchen and clean up help. If you are able to
lend a hand, please contact Julie Hoffman of the Fellowship committee.
