Science 10 Portfolio Evaluation

Portfolio Evaluation
Physics
Energy Flow in Technological Systems
Your portfolio will serve as a great resource for this unit. All necessary information and diagrams should be included
here. This assignment will help you to keep yourself organized, on pace with the course, and serve as an essential study
guide for quizzes, unit tests and the final exam.


Build your portfolio any way you choose. A duo-tang or a small binder is best.
This will be built in a separate binder/duo-tang to your day-to-day notes and activities.
This Portfolio will be a hard copy (no electronic submissions)
 Many parts of this portfolio can be completed in-class, during notes time, work blocks and labs. Keep yourself
organized so not to have to redo content already done. Some work may have to be completed on your own time
(but that’s part of high school ).
 Each part of the portfolio must be submitted on the day of your unit test. I will not accept late portfolios.
If incomplete, hand in what has been accomplished.

Unit Two – Energy Flow in Technological Systems
GUIDING QUESTIONS
General
1. Learn about significant digits and scientific notation – this will take lots of practice.
Kinematics
2. Outline the difference between a vector and a scalar quantity.
3. What is the difference between distance and displacement, speed and velocity?
4. It is important to have an understanding of the types of acceleration. Use this knowledge to illustrate
acceleration on position-time graphs and velocity-time graphs.
5. You will need to know how to develop a proper graph
Include a distance-time, position-time and velocity-time graph.
It is important that you know how to read and interpret these graphs.
6. Learn about the concept of work, that is the transfer of energy from one object to another.
Energy
7. You will need to describe and identify the different types of energy:
chemical
electrical energy and magnetism
nuclear and solar
8. Can you describe Potential Energy (there are 3 types). You will need to be able to manipulate and solve
problems using the equation
E p  mgh
9. Can you describe Kinetic Energy. You will need to be able to manipulate and solve problems using the
equation
Ek 
1 2
mv
2
10. Can you describe Mechanical Energy. You will need to be able to manipulate and solve problems using the
equation
Em  Ek  E p
11. Understand about energy conversions. We will be studying this particularly as it relates to your project,
but you also need to know other types of conversions.
Thermodynamics
12. Outline the first and second law of thermodynamics.
13. Useful energy is always lost during any energy conversion. Understand how to calculate efficiency using
this concept.
