The league also indefinitely suspended the two equipment staffers believed to have carried out the plan, including one who called himself “The Deflator.” Brady would miss the season’s showcase kickoff game on Sept. 10 against Pittsburgh, then Week 2 at Buffalo, a home game against Jacksonville and a game at Dallas. He will return the week of a Patriots-Colts AFC championship rematch in Indianapolis. Brady has three days to appeal the suspension to Commissioner Roger Goodell or his designee. Troy Vincent, the NFL’s executive vice president of football operations, wrote letters to the team and Brady saying a league-sponsored investiga- tive report established “substantial and credible evidence” that the quarterback knew the employees were deflating footballs and failed to cooperate with investigators. “Each player, no matter how accomplished and otherwise respected, has an obligation to comply with the rules and must be held accountable for his actions when those rules are violated and the public’s confidence in the game is called into question,” Vincent wrote to Brady. The investigation by attorney Ted Wells found that Brady “was at least generally aware” of plans by two Patriots employees to prepare the balls to his liking, below the league-mandated minimum of 12.5 pounds per square inch. The Patriots defeated the Indianapolis Colts 45-7 and went on to beat the Seattle Seahawks in the Super Bowl. The Patriots lose next year’s first-round pick and a fourthround choice in 2017. Womack homers in Mustangs victory BY MIKE STUNSON [email protected] Cole Womack has done a lot in his storied baseball career at McCracken County, but he did something on Monday that will give him bragging rights at future family reunions. Womack blasted a two-run home run in the third inning of Monday night’s game against Graves County. Not only was it the first home run ever hit at McCracken’s Edward Jones Field, but he did it against his cousin Eamon Hannan — a standout in his own right. The home run sparked the Mustangs’ offense, which gave Womack more than enough to improve to 6-0 on the mound as he led McCracken to a 5-1 victory over Graves. “I’ve been trying to do that for years,” Womack said of his home run on Hannan. “Everything just came together and it felt right. I didn’t say anything to him about it, but I’m sure he’ll be hearing about it.” With the game scoreless in the third inning, Womack hit his long ball to deep left field. There was no doubt the ball would clear the park, with the only question being whether it would be fair or foul. It just barely was ruled fair, giving McCracken the 2-0 lead. The Mustangs tacked on three more runs in the next inning, beginning with a single from Ian Walters and an RBI triple from Reid Pope to bring him in. McCracken continued its fourth-inning rally on an RBI single from Trent Shelby, who later scored on an error. “Eamon is not only a great pitcher, but one of the best players in the region,” McCracken coach Geno Miller said. “But you’re going against the ball. We stayed balanced and got some good swings.” The only trouble Womack ran into was in the fifth inning when Christian Gough reached on a dropped third strike and scored on Graves’ first hit of the day — off the bat of Levi Nesler to cut the deficit to 5-1. The Eagles loaded the bases on a walk and another dropped third strike, but Womack forced a strikeout to get out of the inning. The Mustangs played errorless ball, getting a couple web-gem worthy plays out of freshman Cameron Langston at shortstop and the junior Walters at second. “I thought we played very sound defensively,” Miller said. “The whole infield all made plays. You feed off that as a pitcher. You know Cole is going to throw strikes and give them chances to make plays, and that’s a big asset when you’re on the mound to have those guys making plays.” Womack allowed only two hits, striking out eight and dropping his ERA to 0.73 on the year. Golden State ties series 2-2, routs Grizzlies Associated Press MEMPHIS, Tenn. — MVP Stephen Curry scored 21 of his 33 points by halftime, and the Golden State Warriors snapped their two-game skid Monday night by routing the Memphis Grizzlies 101-84 to tie their Western Conference semifinal at 2-2. The Warriors hadn’t lost three straight games all season, and they never came close as they took back home-court advantage. Curry hadn’t scored more than 23 points in this series, and he nearly had that by halftime. Draymond Green had 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Warriors while Klay Thompson had 15 points, Harrison Barnes 12 and Andre Iguodala 11. Marc Gasol had 19 points and 10 rebounds for Memphis while Zach Randolph had 12 points and 11 rebounds. Mike Conley finished with 10 points and seven assists but was 4 of 15 from the field. Hawks 106, Wizards 101 WASHINGTON — Finally looking a bit more like a No. 1 seed than the team that’s been so-so in the playoffs, the Atlanta Hawks beat the Washington Wizards behind Jeff Teague’s 26 points, including a key 3, to even their second-round series at two games apiece. Two days after hitting a buzzer-beater to win Game 3, Washington’s Paul Pierce missed a 3-point attempt that would have tied the score with less than 10 seconds left. Al Horford had 18 points and 10 rebounds and Paul Millsap added 19 points, six assists and five rebounds, as three of Atlanta’s four All- Stars played significant roles. Washington’s lone AllStar, point guard John Wall, missed a third consecutive game with a broken left hand. Game 5 is Wednesday night at Atlanta. Right from the start, the Hawks were back to being the free-flowing, ball-moving regular-season version of themselves, the squad that won 60 games, rather than the disjointed, disorganized bunch that had been 5-4 this postseason. The Hawks led most of the game, but Washington cut the deficit to 101-97 with under 2 minutes remaining. Teague’s 3-pointer with 72 seconds left got the margin back to seven. Still, after Washington’s Bradley Beal blocked a shot by Dennis Schroder in the lane to keep Atlanta’s lead at 104-101, the Wizards had the ball and called a timeout with 9.5 seconds remaining. They got Pierce an open look at a 3, but it went off the rim. The Wizards, seeded fifth in the Eastern Conference, entered Monday with the best record in these playoffs at 6-1, including 3-0 at home. All-Star race has lacked pizzazz in recent years BY JENNA FRYER AP Auto Racing Writer CONCORD, N.C. — The lore of NASCAR’s annual All-Star race has been building since 1987, when Dale Earnhardt’s “pass in the grass” gave him the victory. That exciting third installment of the All-Star race was followed by plenty of stellar finishes — Rusty Wallace’s 1989 victory over a spinning Darrell Waltrip in a race dubbed “The Tide Slide,” or Davey Allison’s 1992 door-to-door battle with Kyle Petty that sent Allison to the hospital after he took the checkered flag on “One Hot Night.” But the reality is those kinds of finishes don’t happen very often anymore. In fact, the All-Star race has been a bit of a dud for almost 10 years now. There’s been a handful of highlights, mainly involving Kyle Busch, and mostly for the off-track drama created by ontrack incidents. Busch and big brother Kurt wrecked each other in 2007 racing for position, and it triggered a feud that still isn’t completely healed. They went six months without speaking, finally breaking the ice when their grandmother requested a peace agreement for Thanksgiving dinner. In 2010, Kyle Busch tried to pass teammate Denny Hamlin for the lead when Hamlin threw a block that sent Busch into the wall. A livid Busch radioed his team he was “going to kill” Hamlin after the race. “I had this race won! It was won!” he screamed. Aside from that kind of drama, only the most rabid fans can remember many of the hohum finishes of the last decade. Cardinals coming off first series loss the World Series in 2011. “I hate that I constantly bring up the past but the Rays got better because they played at Yankee Stadium and they played at Fenway Park a lot,” Maddon said during the Cardinals’ last homestand. “I’m here to tell you, you want to play good teams, you want to play the best teams as often as you can.” Maddon rattled off Cardinals milestones going back a century when Branch Rickey was just beginning to put his stamp on the franchise, to the 1930s, when they developed a strong farm system, to the present- day blend of high-paid stars and organizationbred fixtures. “That’s a methodology they’ve built up,” Maddon said. “They have a way of doing things and it’s rooted.” During an eight-game winning streak that followed Wainwright’s surgery, four players signed as non-roster invitees earned victories. They swept the Pittsburgh Pirates in a three-game series that lasted 35 innings, with all the games going to extra innings. The likes of Carlos Villanueva, Miguel Socolovich and Mitch Harris stood tall. “You do put a lot of time and effort trying to get the right players to join the organization,” general manager John Mozeliak said. “A lot of times you’re selling opportunity more than anything.” Mark Reynolds had a big hit in two games during the winning streak, a grand slam and goahead double. Signing the slugger to a one-year deal strengthened St. Louis’ bench. “This team always finds a way to win,” Reynolds said recently. “Playing against them so much last year and throughout my career, you get sick of watching them on TV in October pretty much.” Reality has set in a bit with the Cardinals dropping two of three at Pittsburgh over the weekend. Still, they have been tenacious as well as resilient, with the six losses during the marathon 20-game run by a combined 11 runs. Carpenter, who is among the league leaders with a .333 average and 14 doubles, will rejoin the team for an interleague series that starts Tuesday in Cleveland. only occasion when this occurred, particularly in light of the evidence referring to deflation of footballs going back to before the beginning of the 2014 season,” he wrote. “It is impossible to determine whether this activity had an effect on the outcome of games or what that effect was.” In his 243-page report released by the league last week, Wells found that the team broke the rules again, this time by deflating the game footballs after they had been checked by officials. Although the report did not conclusively link the four-time Super Bowl champion to the illegal activity, text messages between the equipment staffers indicated that Brady knew it was going on. Investigators said Brady’s explanation for the messages was implausible. “It is unlikely that an equipment assistant and a locker room attendant would deflate game balls without Brady’s knowledge and approval,” the report said. Although Brady has issued only general statements in his defense, his agent, Don Yee, said the report omitted key facts and was “a significant and terrible disappointment.” The NFL allows each team to provide the footballs used by its offense — a procedure Brady played a role in creating — but it requires them to be inflated in that range of 12.5-13.5 pounds per square inch. Footballs with less pressure can be easier to grip and catch, and Brady has expressed a preference for the lower end of the range. Brady said last week that the scandal hasn’t taken away from the team’s 28-24 Super Bowl win over Seattle — its fourth NFL title since the 2001 season. “Absolutely not,” he said at a previously planned appearance in Salem, Massachusetts, last Thursday night. “We earned everything we got and achieved as a team, and I am proud of that and so are our fans.” BY R.B. FALLSTROM AP Sports Writer ST. LOUIS — More than a month into the season, the St. Louis Cardinals finally lost a series. Given their list of injuries, it’s a remarkable start. The Cardinals finally got a break Monday after playing 20 consecutive games, going 14-6 during a challenging stretch for the players and the team’s training staff. They own the best record in the majors at 22-9 despite losing ace Adam Wainwright for the season with a torn Achilles tendon, shutting down key reliever Jordan Walden due to biceps and shoulder woes and giving third baseman Matt Carpenter a break due to extreme fatigue and dehydration. Marco Gonzales and Jaime Garcia both made injury rehabilitation starts last weekend and both will make at least one more start in the minor leagues. — Associated Press RACE CONTINUED FROM 1B ries in that same stretch, and all three should be among the most dominant drivers in Saturday night’s running at Charlotte Motor Speedway. So what’s the problem with the All-Star race? For starters, there’s nothing really “all-star” about the event. This year’s running is a 110lap affair with probably 20 drivers competing — a little less than half the regular, 43-car field running what’s in essence just a shortened version of any other race on a mile-and-ahalf track. Sure, the event is divided into segments and concludes with a 10-lap sprint to the finish for the $1 million prize. Only problem? Time and time again the current rules package has shown that, barring a late caution or fluke finish, the driver that wins the restart will win the race. Clean air means everything in NASCAR, and 10 laps just aren’t enough for a driver to chase down the leader. Oh, and that part about laying it all out on the line for the chance to win the big prize? Well, $1 million doesn’t mean the same to today’s crop of drivers as it did when the race debuted in 1985. Drivers aren’t racing anymore to buy groceries or tires or to pay the travel to the next week’s race. A lack of true rivalries in the sport leaves little incentive for a driver to take many risks for a $1 million prize, a payout the team owner is taking at least 40 percent from. Nobody wants to tear up equipment or wreck someone in a meaningless race. Some suggestions to improve the race: ■ Put more money on the line. Dangle a prize out there that might actually entice a driver. Charlotte Motor Speedway President Marcus Smith firmly believes the $1 million to the winner — the highest payout in any NASCAR event — is still a meaningful payday. ■ Smith’s idea of not using a rule package is actually a strong draw for the competitors and fans. It would put some ingenuity and creativity into car design and setup, and for one race legalize any attempts to, ahem, cheat and get outside of NASCAR’s current box. ■ Scrap the Showdown, the race where drivers can transfer into the main event. Turn it into heat races, which have proved to be wildly popular among fans when used in the Truck Series at Eldora Speedway. A trip to Washington This week, students from every state will meet to compete for the championship of the National Geographic Bee in Washington, D.C. The Mini Page talked with the executive director of the bee to find out more about the contest. What is geography? Geography is the study of the features of our planet and the way that human populations affect those features, such as how we use the land and where we live. The word comes from Greek, with “geo” meaning Earth and “graphia” meaning writing. Beefing up geography The National Geographic Bee is just 26 years old. In 1989, educators were worried that students weren’t learning enough about geography. The National Geographic Society started the bee to let people know how important geography knowledge is and to get kids excited about learning. Starting with schools Each year in February, more than 4 million students from schools all across the country compete in their school geography bees. The school bees also take place in the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, U.S. Pacific territories, and in the schools for children of U.S. military service members. Students in grades 5 through 8 can compete in school bees. Did you participate in your school geo bee? from The Mini Page © 2015 Universal Uclick Are you a geography whiz? Moving on to state Winners of school bees take a written test. The top 100 scores in each state or territory then compete in a state bee in March. In May, 54 winners of the state bees travel to Washington with their families to represent their state or territory in the national bee. National bee contestants receive $100, and their trip to the capital is paid for by the National Geographic Society. With the stakes so high, experience is often an important key to success. But not always. The Duke University Blue Devils took the court in the championship game with three freshmen in the starting lineup and a fourth coming off the bench. Freshman point guard Tyus Jones led the charge for the Blue Devils, who had powered through the South Region to advance to the school’s 16th Final Four and its 11th championship game appearance. In the 68-63 victory against the Wisconsin Badgers, Tyus led all scorers with 23 points and helped Duke claim its fifth national title. For his efforts, Tyus was named the Final Four’s Most Outstanding Player, becoming the first Duke freshman to win the award, and the sixth overall. Why do we call contests of knowledge about geography or spelling “bees”? According to Merriam-Webster, this bee is different from the stinging insects we think of when we hear the word. The Middle English word “bene” meant help given by neighbors in accomplishing a task. People still get together to help each other other assemble a quilt at quilting bees. Contests of spelling and other subjects can be traced back to the 1600s. You can “bee” a part of this long tradition by participating in your school’s spelling or geography bee! Stick to what’s familiar even if it’s boring. Self-deception will lead you down the wrong path. Ask a trusted friend for his or her thoughts regarding your current situation. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): A fast talker will try to take advantage of you. Don’t be gullible. If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Make a concerted effort to improve personal relationships with talk, not cash. You can’t buy love. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): You will have to compromise if you want to accomplish anything today. Avoid senseless disputes and focus on making money. It’s important to work toward greater security and a stable future. CANCER (June 21-July 22): Bring your ideas into the open and begin the process of making them a reality. You’ll be surprised by the returns you get from the effort you make. Love is on the rise and a promise can be made. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Money can be made, but not through a fast-cash scheme. Make a change to your current situation that is geared toward a higher income. Steady progress can be made if you are disciplined and willing to do the work yourself. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Keep your thoughts to yourself if you don’t want to be called out by a colleague waiting for you to make a mistake. Focus on what you do best and you will outmaneuver any competition you face. Let your intuition guide you. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Take action. This is not the day to sit back and let others take the lead. Use your common sense, expertise and knowledge to get what you want. Don’t argue or make a fuss; do whatever it takes to bring about positive change. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Things are looking up. Let your imagination lead you in a new direction. Love is in the stars, and joining forces with someone special will lead to a better home environment. Develop your dreams, hopes and wishes, and you will succeed. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22Dec. 21): Don’t waffle or take someone’s word as gospel. Do your due diligence, ask questions and make decisions based on your findings and your needs. Personal or professional changes will be necessary in order to keep the peace. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Don’t feel obliged to take part in something that doesn’t interest you. Time spent doing your own thing will pay off. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Consider making a residential move or upgrade your current environment. Talks will lead to positive changes and a workable plan. Begin a project that has potential, and it could become profitable. Speak your mind. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Uncertainty will cloud your vision.
