Indiana’s waterways are the most efficient form of transportation for a number of industries, including grain. Each year, they provide safe, cost-effective transport for 1,036 million tons of products. Faulty lock systems take a significant toll. There are five locks and dams on the Ohio River along Indiana’s southern border; many are operating at twice their intended lifespan. Imagine if just ONE lock closed down for one year stuck! anywhere on the river system. Farmers that ship only 5% failed lock of their cargo on waterways would lose $18.6 million. That economic hardship multiplies exponentially, when you consider all the industries that use our waterways. 2010 annual tonnage - 1036 Million Tons other petroleum grain R COMMODITY E V F RI 5% WS LO OHI O coal 30% 59% When a lock system fails, there’s a profound ripple effect. • It impacts industries like coal, hardwood, and agriculture. • It impacts support industries, especially the ports, terminals and fleeting areas that provide jobs and income. • It impacts roads and railways, as industries seek alternate forms of transportation. 6 % • It impacts counties competing for relocating business.
