Where do you buy kit supplies? Many of us rely on

Syrian Refugee Update:
LWR, with your help, has provided
School Kits for classrooms in Damascus, Syria; Quilts & Kits for families in
refugee camps in Lebanon and Jordan. Now LWR is providing Quilts & Kits to
refugees who have reached Serbia. Since Oct 2012, LWR has shipped more
than $7M million in quilts and kits to Syrian refugees. And the needs keep
growing. LWR also supports the ACT Alliance, a coalition of more than 140
churches and faith-based organizations providing aid to refugees in in Greece,
Hungary and Serbia. Please continue your wonderful support of both Quilts
and Kits.
Where do you buy kit supplies? Many of us rely on
“faithful members” to provide the towels, combs, and toothbrushes, Many of those faithful
buy these supplies and donate. Sometimes they hunt down sales. If items are not on
sale, or no one buys enough, someone else must “fill in the gaps” at retail, or maybe we
do not send as many kits. Here I present where I buy Personal Care Kit supplies on line,
that are usually cheaper than retail, and in the first two cases, higher quality. You must
buy larger quantities, but they can be used later, or you can sell to another nearby
congregation. Individually Wrapped Toothbrushes - 38 cents from American Dental Accessories,
7310 Oxford St, Minneapolis. The web site is: www.amerdental.com.
“SmartSmile Adult Toothbrush”,
minimum 72. I order 3 x 72 to minimize shipping costs. You do not need to rewrap these in envelopes!
High quality combs - 21 cents (pack of 144) from www.overstock.com. Photo above left of Medline
Large Handle Black Comb.
Bath & Hand Towels - when we don’t find white sales, use Imperial Textile www.Bathlinensforless.com. Look for Prism Towel Collection. Bath towels are 20 x 40 inches - which is
ok. They are thinner than typical American plush towels - and dry faster in humid climates without dryers.
Cost varies by color - only buy dark - $2.50 - $2.70 per bath towel. They may take a week or more to fill
order. Wrapping inside a smaller towel affects your assembly line.
Quilting or Congregational Stories: If you have stories to share, do so on the LWR Quilter’s
Facebook page, or send to LWR. The Winter 2016 Faith in Action includes two articles about two
congregations’ long-term quilting efforts. One is Lutheran Church of the Redeemer in Chimacum, WA.
Trinity Lutheran in Parkland (Tacoma) WA was featured in the Parkland Light and Water Ruralite
magazine. You can request Faith and Action from LWR, or download on-line at:
http://lwr.org/site/apps/ka/ec/catalog.asp?c=dmJXKiOYJgI6G&b=8297945&CategoryID=921342
Shipping Costs:
The average cost per pound from Seattle to Baltimore (21 cents) and overseas (54
cents) for total of 75 cents. However, LWR needs quilts and kits before they worry about paying for
shipping. Some folks who do not make quilts or assemble kits donate funds for shipping. Your quilts’
shipping costs are far less than LWR buying quilts for cash! If you cannot afford the total, that is ok -
just send a check for what you can afford.

Project Promise - Build Kits of Care. LWR is announcing a new focus on Kits. I believe that part
of the reason is to involve more persons - generally women who can sew (and a few men) make quilts.
However, if some folks buy the kit materials, you can invite anyone to assemble kits. At Queen Anne
Lutheran, our Men’s Group, Adult Forum, and Sunday School have assembled, sometimes in conjunction
with an LWR learning session.
The hardest part is keeping an inventory before the “Kit Assembly Line
Day.” It is not efficient to have planned 100 kits, but have only 20 of one item. The 2nd issue is planning
the assembly line. And finally, training your kit assemblers. Speed is not the goal. A tightly wrapped kit - in
the case of Personal Care or Baby Care Kits - is the goal, so nothing can fall out.
School Kits packing
should minimize damage to contents. Short videos on how to pack your Baby Care, Personal Care,
and School Kits include really great tips by Melanie Gibbons, LWR's Quilt & Kit Ministry Manager go to

Have you been able to produce bar code labels to include both inside and outside of your boxes? If you
add that step to your packing / boxing process, LWR will be able to report where your church’s quilts and kits
go. Go to http://lwr.org/getinvolved/FAQ (frequently asked questions) for an outline of the process.

New Congregation: I will highlight one congregation, because I checked them in at the Fall Seattle
Ingathering. They are St Luke’s Episcopal of Sequim. We thank them for supporting the LWR Quilt & Kit
Ministry. And if any of you can interest other non-Lutheran congregations, great. The Seattle Ingathering
trucks usually have some extra space, which we would love to fill with more quilts or kits. Even if your Sunday
School kids who assemble kits cannot afford to “pay shipping” - that is fine.
Queen Anne Lutheran Women continue being green - saving fabric from the landfill. If you would
like fabric samples, please visit us at the Seattle Ingathering or call Candy @ 206-633-5795. Did
you know that many of the upholstery fabrics are warmer than cotton? The HEAVIEST fabrics are
no longer being saved.
