Effective descriptions • Write a one line description of a man who is smiling coldly. • Write a one line description about a girl who is pestering her parents. Effective descriptions • Look at what you have written or look at a partners' work. • What have you or your partner done to achieve the two objectives: • Pick out and underline any devices that you have used for example: imagery, personification, powerful vocabulary choice, careful sentence structure. How do the descriptions work? What can you learn about writing effectively that will help you get the grades? Assessment Focus • In English there are a range of different skills that you need to show in your reading and writing • To help you target what to do there are Writing And Reading Assessment For Learning Sheets • Try to think: Am I using the AF’s to help me improve? What do I need to do to get a good level? Writing Assessment 1 – write imaginative, interesting and thoughtful texts. • You have relevant ideas and your material is developed with imaginative detail if you are a L5 writer or higher HOW TO MOVE UP THE LEVELS Writing Assessment 1 – write imaginative, interesting and thoughtful texts. • A L5 writer or higher will always try to develop their ideas and their material will be appropriately shaped for the type of text that they are writing • e.g. Thinking about PALL before writing – the purpose, audience, language and layout of the text. HOW TO MOVE UP THE LEVELS Writing Assessment 1 – write imaginative, interesting and thoughtful texts. • To gain a Level 5 or higher make sure that you establish a clear viewpoint in your writing • e.g. develop a character in your writing or develop a strong voice HOW TO MOVE UP THE LEVELS Writing Assessment 7 – select appropriate and effective vocabulary. • To achieve a L5 or higher you should choose vocabulary carefully for effect • e.g. experiment with word choices HOW TO MOVE UP THE LEVELS Writing Assessment 7 – select appropriate and effective vocabulary. • To gain a L5 or higher you should use a reasonably wide vocabulary • e.g. get into the habit of using a thesaurus HOW TO MOVE UP THE LEVELS Look back at your crafted sentences where you used the word arctic or fly: Writing Task: Write a character description using one of your carefully crafted sentences as a starting point. Think about the skills that this lesson has explored and the way that you can show them in your writing today: Developing your writing with imaginative detail Structuring ideas appropriately Establish a clear viewpoint in your writing Choose vocabulary carefully for effect Self Or Carer’s Marking Look at a partner’s work or your own. You are going to pick out the features that they used in their writing to achieve the lesson objectives: Underline and highlight writing that shows: 1. Imaginative detail 2. Imagery for example personification, similes and metaphors 3. Careful and varied sentence structure 4. Powerful vocabulary choices 5. Paragraphs that are clearly structured At the bottom of the work write 2 things that you liked and one thing that would help improve the writing.
