Greetings to everyone from Housing! We hope training was a fantastic experience for you and that your fall semester has started off well, both on your floor and in the classroom. Here in Housing we’re actively working on making sure everyone who is supposed to be here is indeed here. Also, since we were fortunate enough not to have temporary triples this fall, the scheduled Room Change Freeze has actually melted= and we will be addressing those as we are able. You may continue to advise your residents to complete their room change request online at http://www.jmu.edu/orl/housing/room-changes.shtml. One thing we would definitely like all staff to help us with is reminding residents that returning student contracts will be going live on October 5 at 1:15PM. Students who have decided that they would like to return to live on campus for the 2016-17 year will be able to apply for housing on that date. Students will be bombarded with flyers and advertising from all of the off-campus properties trying to pressure them into signing a lease NOW, which is why we begin the contracting process as early as we do. Those students who have already signed the second year contract don’t need to do anything. This process is for students who chose not to sign the second year contract earlier this year. Please encourage your residents to submit a housing application if they are interested in returning to live on campus for 2016-17. We will then review their housing applications and extend contract offers to students via their JMU email address. Students should definitely NOT sign a lease off-campus if they also have a contract signed with ORL! If you (or they) have any questions about any of this, please feel free to call us! Room selection for returning students will be done in the spring, and we will furnish you with lots of information on that as we get closer. Thank you for all of your hard work making Move-In such a smooth and successful experience! Feel free to come by and visit us in A section any time! Have a great semester! The Housing Office 540-568-4663 [email protected] Huffman Hall, A- Section -2- Grafton-Stovall Movie Passes You heard it right! We have Grafton-Stovall movie passes available for you to take your residents to the movies as part of Community programming! Since you cannot show movies in your halls as programs, we have this option available to you. Movie passes cost $3 per person – plus, for every 2 tickets, you will get one coupon for free popcorn courtesy of UPB! How to get tickets: Complete a Money Request Form via Erezlife. Indicate how many residents will be joining you. Follow the same timeline as normal for requests. Come by C-Section for passes. After the program: Record attendance in post evaluation on Erezlife as well as on form that is provided with movie passes and any unused passes. Village Voice Whats up Village? It’s hard to believe we are already rockin’ and rollin’ with the school year. Training, move-in, and 1787 Orientation flew by! I hope everyone has enjoyed getting to know their residents – before you know it, we’ll be l eaving for Thanksgiving Break! You all did an amazing job with everything over the last month and I’m so proud that you are a part of the Village. It’s going to be a great year – let’s continue to make the Village the best place to live on-campus! One of the best Village traditions from year to year is our monthly bulletin board contest. Since we have a standard due date throughout the area, the HDs and myself will go around and take pictures of all the boards you do around the first of the month. Then, in one of our area staff meetings, we will vote on the top 3 and those winners will be announced in the monthly Lifeline article. Those winners will also receive a little prize each month. The winners for the month of September are… 1st Place – Caroline Retel (White) "Yellow Brick Road to Success" 2nd Place – Isabel Oliver (Weaver) "12 Hacks for Making this a Sweet Year" 3rd Place – Michelle Mullins (Fred) "Girls on Fire" Finally, I just wanted to let you know that while you won’t see me as often as you did during training, my door is always open for you. Anytime you want to stop by my office in Huffman and chat or pick my brain about something, I would be more than happy to see you all (you can get some candy and check out my extensive and slightly obnoxious collection of Potato Heads as well). Also, in the next couple of weeks, I’ll be asking your HDs to help me schedule 1:1s with every RA. This will be a chance for you and me to catch up and get to know one another a little better. It’s also a time for you to bring any questions you might have about ANYTHING. STAY TUNED! Honorable Mentions Deuces, Lauren Obaugh (Hanson) Kayla Branson (Huffman) Doug Schilling (Chappelear) Jacqui Finston (Ikenberry) Victoria Acosta (Garber Hall) Patrick Francis (Dingledine) Cover -3- S’mores Snack Mix 4 c. Whoa, where did August go? It feels like only yesterday I was meeting my new area family. THANK YOU LAKE HILL TEAM for all of your hard work during training and getting the halls open. I appreciate your positive attitudes and boundless energy as everyone is settling into their new homes for a new semester. Check your bulletin boards for Area Director Bulletin Board of the Month Winners. I will continue to do this throughout the semester. September also bring FALL and with FALL comes one of my favorite times of year: College Football Season! Whether you are out cheering on the DUKES or another favorite college team, I have a few treats listed below that will get you in the mood to root your team on to victory. YOU ARE INCREDIBLE! Each and every one of you has contributed so positively to your communities, training, orientations, and move in. The halls looked beautiful, and now they are finally full. I am so proud of you and am looking forward to watching your halls grow and change under your guidance. THANK YOU! Thank you for your energy, for your positivity, for your trust, and for believing in our mission. Your Hall Directors have been filling me in on the incredible things you’ve been doing so keep it up! Now, we are back in classes, the old routine, fire drills, programs, addressing not-great decisions, and the like - make sure you are making time for yourselves! Get out of the hall, do something fun, and most importantly take time to breathe and be you! If you are near Huffman, come visit! WELCOME HOME! Nicole -4- SKYLINE Skyline Time! I know it has been a busy past couple of weeks for everyone and now classes are under way. Training was a quick week and I appreciated all of your energy and enthusiasm throughout the week. We had a pretty smooth check-in thanks to all of your dedication and hard work. I was glad to see everyone welcoming their new residents with open arms and putting a smile on that face, even towards the end of some long days. I also wanted to say thank you to everyone who chipped in to help out with another hall’s check-in process, your help was greatly appreciated! Everyone has been working hard on their first programs and I am excited to see how everything goes when I get your program evaluations. If you ever get stuck without ideas make sure to talk to your HD’s and the PA’s in the FYI center. I will be around the Skyline here and there on any given day, but if you need to talk with me please don’t hesitate to call our office and set up a time to meet about anything. Bulletin Board of the Month winners from September will be recognized at our area devo in October. HD’s will submit the bulletin boards they feel are worthy of recognition for the month and during our area staff meeting we will choose the top boards from the Skyline halls. Also those recognized will get a treat of their choice from Wal-Mart. We will also be recognizing RA’s who create amazing advertisements for programs in the halls, along with that we will be recognizing RA’s of the week and an overall outstanding RA of the month at our area devo as well! Good luck with September and keep building your communities! Jon Need Highlighters? RAs if you are planning a program, especially an academic one and you would like highlighters to give to your residents let me know. I have some in my office I would be happy to provide for free. Just list them one your eRezLife money request as “X# of free highlighters from Kathleen” -5- -6- FYI Syllabus 2015 Contact Info FYI Hours FYI Resources FYI Staff The Center @Follow us@ @JMUFYI on Instagram, twitter, Facebook New Blog: JMUFYI.blogspot.com Email: [email protected] Sunday: 12pm - 8pm Monday: 10:30am - 8pm Tuesday: 11am - 8pm Wednesday: 10:30am - 8pm Thursday: 10am - 8pm Friday: 10am - 5pm Saturday: closed!
