Farren Lake Property Owners' Association
A message from the Editor
This will be my last issue as editor of the FLPOA
newsletter. After ten years on the job, it is time to
turn over the publication to someone else, who can
add a fresh look to our newsletter. It has been a
privilege to have been entrusted with this
responsibility, and I sincerely hope that the product
has been interesting and informative.
I have no doubt that your new editor will continue
the tradition of addressing matters of importance to
the health and social aspects of our own Farren
Lake. Finally, thanks to all who have contributed
ideas, content and photos to your editor.

A message from the President
I would like to express my appreciation to all
FLPOA members for their support and cooperation
during my year as president of our Association.
Earlier in the summer, an incident occurred on the
lake which brought safety issues to our attention.
Through quick and decisive action, Tim Blake and
other lake residents were able to save a man from
drowning. This event emphasized the need to be
vigilant. We all must be consistent with the use of
PFDs that are sized correctly and worn
appropriately.
On the lake property development front, the owners
of the McCann property on Lane 31 are challenging
Tay Valley Township at an OMB hearing scheduled
for February 8-10, 2017. Come to the AGM in May
for further updates. On behalf of the FLPOA, I
wish to thank the following three Board
members for their many years of service to our
Association. Lea Barker (Newsletter editor),
John Ficner (Website manager), and Ron
Fitzgerald (Treasurer) have done incredible jobs
May you all enjoy a healthy and happy winter
season. See you at the lake in the spring,
George
Mark the Date: our AGM will held at the
ABC Hall on Saturday, May 20, 2017.

Farren Lake Fame
Last summer, Farren Lake was the setting for a
music video “Murray's Song”, made for the
popular kids programme “Way Cool”. It was
also the setting for a recording session by the
musical group “Three Sheets to the Wind”.
For the AGM:
Did DINOSAURS roam at Faren Lake? Our
guest speaker this year, Mr Bob Woods from
Bolingbroke, will provide us with historical
facts about the area around Farren Lake.

Lake Networking works for you!
The Lake Networking Group is comprised of
volunteer representatives of lake associations
from Lanark, Leeds & Grenville and Frontenac
Counties. The Group meets twice a year (April
and September) to discuss issues that affect all
of us.
An abbreviated summary of Sept 20/16 topics
include the following:
1.
Rideau Valley Conservation Authority
(RVCA) reviewed the Shoreline Naturalization
program. Cottage property owners may be
eligible for free shoreline review, free native
plants and free labour for planting! Learn
more about the program at www.RVCA.ca
2.
Ministry of Natural Resources and
Forestry (MNRF) offers support to link Lake
Associations with the right people to help with
projects such as Fish Habitat development and
funding for lake stewardship and restoration
plans.
3.
Federation of Cottage Associations
representative, Terry Kennedy, emphasized the
ongoing issues of importance for FOCA.
These include discussions with Hydro One
about hydro delivery charges to cottage
country, representation on MPAC reviews, and
networking with politicians to insure they are
well aware of cottage property owner concerns.
4.
Water testing: what is tested and what
are the costs?
5.

Are there any questions, concerns, topics,
issues, remarks that FLPOA can raise for you
at the next Lake Networking meeting?? Email
your input to Kris McDonald, FLPOA

A note re requirements for volunteers
Looking Ahead - Road Reps
Our Lake Executive would like to increase the
number of paid memberships
each year. It is to the benefit of ALL that we
work toward supporting the Association.
One way to do this is to have a road
representative on each road leading into Farren
Lake
by next season. The Reps duties would be to
obtain names and email info of the
cottagers on their road, collect the applicable
membership fee and deliver any
pertinant information coming from FLPOA at
that time.
A few roads already have a rep and by following
this system we will then have contact with
all cottagers on the lake by either email or letter.
Thanks for your future cooperation in this
endeavour.
If you would care to assist as a representative on
your road please let me know.
Our preference of course is to mail in your
membership form after receiving the
May Newsletter or when attending the AGM.

We also need volunteers for these positions on
the FLPOA executive group:
- newsletter editor
- treasurer
- Web master.
Please consider these requirements, for our next
AGM in May, 2017.

2016 weather
As most will know, the summer of 2016 was
recorded as the hottest on record, for North
America as a whole. Although some past years
have been hotter over-all, what made 2016 unique
was the lack of rain. This is clear from the water
level chart below, and the sporadic rain records
that I kept. The low water also allowed the lake
bed to rise again in the bay, as seen in the photo in
the right-hand column.

Notes for the next FLPOA Newsletter Editor
Fire service contact reference
The newsletter has always been generated using
WORD, but not using the column function.
Instead, I used the Text Box function because I
was too lazy to learn the column process! A
better way would be to use a freeware publishing
program, such as Scribus, The content of the
newsletter is partly fixed and partly at the
discretion of the Editor. Photos are always good,
and allow easier space management. I encourage
the next editor to use their originality to put their
personal stamp on this document, rather than just
following my pattern. This will add a new flavor
and perspective.
Burning permits (a reminder)
A Fire Permit is required for ALL open air burning.
Fire Permits are available at the Municipal Office
(217 Harper Road) or the Drummond/North
Elmsley Tay Valley Fire Rescue Administration
Office (14 Sherbrooke St., Perth). If you are unable
to visit the Office to obtain a fire permit, please call
the Township Office. We (TVT) are quite flexible
and can make arrangements to help you obtain a
permit (either by fax or mail). Fire Permits issued
from 2004 and on are stored in a database, so you
are NOT required to obtain a new permit each
calendar year. Once you have obtained a permit,
you must contact the Fire Rescue Administration
EVERY TIME you wish to burn. They can be
reached at 613-267-2596. Hours of burning operate
from SUNRISE TO SUNSET ONLY, seven days a

about the Association to members. Any member is
welcome to submit articles of common interest. This
could include stories of family reunions, wildlife
sightings around the lake, winter activities, and, of
course, fish stories. We would like to hear about the
ones that got away! And don't forget to include your
pictures for the photo gallery. Send your materials to
[email protected] and visit the site at
www.FarrenLake.ca .
Each new issue of this newsletter will be posted on
the Web site, complete with colour photos!
