FY2015 ANNUAL REPORT
Ending Isolation and
Loneliness, Block by Block

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota
Little Brothers - Friends of the Elderly is situated on East
Lake Street in the heart of the Corcoran neighborhood of
Minneapolis – and has been since 1976. The building serves as
the hub for our programming and operations, and houses the
event center where most of our elder social activities take place.
Being a part of our community is important to us. We watch
from our windows as neighbors walk by and check out the
books in our Little Free Library, then leave a book or two –
often in Spanish. We’re rocked by the Lake Street traffic that
rumbles by and meet many long-time neighbors when we host community forums
and events such as the Corcoran Soup Cook-off. Our location is accessible, allowing a
number of elders in the neighborhood to walk to our activities or come by way of the
bus or Blue Line.
But LBFE also has a stake in many other communities in the Twin Cities area,
serving elders in such varied neighborhoods as Payne-Phalen and West 7th in St. Paul
and Fulton and Humboldt neighborhoods in Minneapolis. And our reach far exceeds
the limits of the Twin Cities, drawing volunteers from places such as Lakeville,
Chaska, Lindstrom and Stillwater, and financial support from donors as far away as
Florida, Arizona and Missouri.
Throughout our fiscal year 2015, LBFE deepened its commitment to ending
isolation through strong community connections so elders can remain independent
in their own homes. And communities are benefiting as a result. They’re that much
more vibrant and inclusive because elders are able to shop at local stores, participate
in city council meetings and have coffee with their neighbors.
We hope you will enjoy reviewing our FY2015 Annual Report. The tremendous
achievements mentioned within these pages were all made possible by your
partnership, financial support and gifts of time and thoughtfulness.
So no matter your role with us, thank you for helping LBFE create a community that
is less isolating and more welcoming to elders – for today, and for years to come.

Visiting Volunteer Jenna was matched with elder friend Paul
and it couldn’t have been more fortuitous. “I’m originally from
Madison, Wisconsin, but went to school in LaCrosse, which
is where Paul is from,” Jenna said. They often chat about his
hometown on their visits. Paul, a widower, credits Jenna and
Program Manager Christina for erasing his loneliness: “Little
Brothers does an awful lot for me – they got me off the couch.
Little Brothers lifts my spirits.” “It makes my heart feel full
when I visit Paul,” said Jenna. “I care about him like family.”

In FY2015, LBFE’s core program, Visiting and Advocacy, offered services supporting
235 vulnerable older adults living alone to help them build formal and informal
support networks, reduce their social isolation and increase their independence. LBFE
staff members provided in-home visits and phone calls, acted as advocates, made
referrals to other services, and helped these older adults solve problems. Program
staff often worked with Visiting Volunteers who were matched to elders according to
interests, cultural needs and geography and provided regular visits and companionship.

Throughout the fiscal year, 67 thoughtfully planned social programs, all
hosted by LBFE, connected elders with staff, volunteers and peers in an
atmosphere of joy, friendship and acceptance. Activities included holiday
meals, birthday lunches, cards and crafts groups, bingo, wellness and
educational programming, intergenerational events and more. Corporate
groups, schools and community groups often sponsored the activities and
assisted in the planning and hosting, helping to provide a total of 1,958
individual social experiences for elders.
The path to B E T TE R L I V I N G
This year-long program was designed to augment basic life skills that elders
need to offset the risks of their isolation. The program was comprised of
four quarterly themes: Aging with Gusto, Healthy Communications and
Relationships, Brain Fitness and Senior Financial Safety. Each theme was
introduced in a two-hour workshop, where the elders learned skills and
developed personalized goals. The elders were then coached and supported
throughout each quarter as they worked to achieve their goals. Twenty-five
elders completed the program, which was made possible by grants from
the Stevens Square Foundation and the Leonette M. and Fred T. Lanners
Foundation, and through donor support. The program is replicable in whole
or as a supplement to other programs.

LBFE’s popular Friendship and Flowers program involved 194 homebound
older adults and nursing home residents in FY2015. Elders in the program
received a short visit on the third Saturday of the month from individual
and family volunteers who brought flowers and treats provided by LBFE.
The program is designed to help reduce isolation and loneliness and instill a
sense of dignity in elders who would otherwise have no visitors. Volunteers
submitted status reports alerting staff of any need for follow-up assistance.
