Poste Italiane’s environmental commitment Poste Italiane Group participates since 2010 in the international EMMS (Environmental Monitoring and Measurement System) programme of IPC – International Post Corporation, the lobby of the major postal operators which, together, manage about 80% of the global mail volumes. Launched in 2008, EMMS programme aims at monitoring CO2 emissions and assessing participating posts’ sustainability and commitment to reduce their carbon footprint; it is based on the exchange of best practices and on the creation of an effective and concrete model for sustainable development. Today participants include 25 postal operators from all continents (besides 22 out of IPC’s 24 members, also postal operators of Brasil, South Africa and Nigeria), which collectively manage about 100 thousand buildings, a fleet of about 500 thousand vehicles and over 2 million employees. In 2014 EMMS participants managed to collectively reduce their CO2 emissions by over 20% since 2008, six years ahead of schedule (by 2020), thus decreasing their yearly CO2 emissions from 8,879 to 7,050 thousand tonnes and generating overall saving of over 8 million CO2 tonnes. Similarly, in 2014 fuel consumption decreased by 5% since 2008, with cumulative savings of over 447.3 million fuel litres over six years since the launching of the programme; while the group’s electricity consumption shifted from 9.95TWh to 7.95TWh. The excellent results achieved confirm postal operators’ commitment in reducing environmental impact and prove increasing expertise and specific competence, which make EMMS the first sector sustainability programme. In order to stem the negative impact of environmental change, it is necessary to opt for renewable energy, thus contributing to reduce CO2 emissions: Poste Italiane has anticipated this approach some years ago, by deciding to switch to renewable energy. Within EMMS programme, IPC has also started collaboration with some important international organizations in corporate social responsibility, such as WWF, WRI, CDP and UNGC, whose standards EMMS refers to, in order to harmonize not only measurement, but also data reporting. Amongst the best practices presented last year, Poste Italiane contributed with its energy consumption optimization project. In 2014, as in previous years, Poste Italiane Group achieved medium-high levels of performance in terms of environmental sustainability, contributing to the overall reduction target for about 12 thousand CO2 tonnes from direct emissions. 1/2 ( source: IPC – www.ipc.be)) 2/2
