First Grade
A. Weaver, W. McKay, B. St. John, K. Kalber
The school year is now down to its final days.
Ms. McKay's class has worked very hard this
year on reading, writing, and math. We
would like to share all our favorite first grade
memories with everyone. Please enjoy them.
My Favorite First Grade Memory.....
Julasia Nelson - Doing math, having lunch,
and playing recess with my friends.
Melanie Perez - The snowball dance, the
butterflies, book buddies, celebrating
birthdays, going on field trips, art, music, gym,
MLT, and using the computers.
Jaden Miles - Working on the computer.
Nicole Testa - Letting our butterflies go free,
and making a butterfly in art with Ms. Ferrazzi.

book buddy.
Garrett Kronenberger - Writing my first story in
my journal about playing football.

my birthday, and letting our butterflies go
free.
Kiara Perez - Going to art class because I
like to paint and draw beautiful pictures. I
like Ms. Ferrazzi too.

I am so proud of the progress that your
child has made in my first grade class this
year. Best wishes to all students and families
for a restful and enjoyable summer
vacation. I wish you all the best next year.
Some bats can be black, white, gray, red and
brown. I also learned bats sleep upside down
and their wings are really arms.

Mrs. Kalber’s Class
Here’s what Mrs. Weaver’s Students have to

they learned and WHY they feel it is important!
“I learned how to spell really difficult words!
Now I know how to read them in books.”William Nguyen
“I learned how to become a better reader.”Dakota Santello
“I learned how to tell time. If you don’t know
how to tell time then you will be late.”-Jordan
Mims
“I learned how to subtract and I used
subtraction when I was getting rid of some old
toys. I was able to find out how many I had
left.”-Tamaia waters
“I learned how to tell time. It is important
because if you have a job you have to be on
time.”-Christian Sella
“I learned how to spell words. If you want to
write a letter to a friend you need to be able
to spell words correctly.”-Ariana Medina
“I learned how to retell stories. It’s important to
be able to tell about a story to become a
stronger reader.”-Naiviv Ayala
“I learned how to tell time. It’s important
because if Mrs. Weaver say’s come to school
by 9:00 and you don’t come until 10:00 then
you are late!”-Kassandra Serrano
My favorite first grade memory was the bat
learning party. Our family got to see it. We
ate jelly doughnuts to pretend that we were
vampire bats. We also ate fruit and drank
mango juice like fruit bats. Since bats are
mammals we drank milk.
Our families
learned so many different things about bats.
“I learned how to tell time and it was important
because when you grow up and have a job
your boss wants you to be there on time.”Justice Roman
“I learned the meaning of some new words
like: tremendous and palate. It’s important to
learn the meaning of new words because we
could use them when we talk to others.”Robert Nowicky
“I learned how to count coins. Now I can buy
a toy.”-Manual Cuevas
My favorite thing in first grade was when I and
some of my friends went to the Ice Cream
Social. I had chocolate and vanilla ice cream.
After that we all got to color for a few minutes
and after the minutes past we all lined up and
went to get our other friends.
Moises
“I learned how to add. It’s important to learn
how to add because if 10 kids are coming to
your birthday party and then 3 more come it
will be 13 in all.”
-Tyson Gibertoni

“I learned how to count. It’s important to
know how to count because you won’t be
able to buy anything or plan a birthday
party.”-Melvin Silva
“I learned how to count money. If you don’t
know how to count money then you can’t
buy food at the store to survive.” –Rachelle
Feliciano

don’t know how to follow directions then you
can’t learn. I want to be a teacher someday
so I need to follow directions so that I could
learn how to be a teacher.”-Angey Perez
“I learned how to tell time. If you don’t know
how to tell time then you don’t know when to
be at certain places.”-Christopher McCarthy
“I learned how to be respectful to others. If
you are not respectful to other kids then you
won’t make friends easily.”-Jacob Weisz
Favorite things about first grade---Edited selections from Mrs. St. John’s students.
My favorite things in first grade were when
we went to the Meriden Public Library to get
books to read at home. We have to be quiet
in the library so you won’t disturb people. If
we want another book we go quietly to get
one. Dalia
My favorite thing in first grade was going to the
public library. I mean I got to have a book to
barrow and one to keep. I still have that book.
It’s silly! It’s about a hippo who is late for work
and he sings a song. It goes like this, “Gotta to
go fast, fast, fast. Gotta to go faster, faster,
faster.” And he did, he finally got to work. We
all had to walk back to school. We all walked
up a hill and we went here and there and
finally got there. Leo
My favorite things in first grade were math,
music, homework and making friends. The
most important thing of all is reading. I read
and read, I can not stop my brain. One more
thing important is my teacher. She teaches
and teaches and probably needs a break.
Veron
My favorite thing in first grade was making
friends because that is what is important to
me. Sarah

My Favorite Second Grade Memories
By Star Picagli
My first favorite Second Grade memory is
when I got to go to the Durham Fair. We got
to see sheep, horses and other farm animals
too. Another favorite memory is when I also
got to learn about Multiplication, like 2 x 5 =
10. Some kids in my class are really good at
it! Mrs. Sharnick, my teacher, is great. I just
like how Mrs. Sharnick helps us learn. On June
3rd we went to The Children’s Museum. I had
such fun there. I am practicing my Math
facts and Mrs. Sharnick is teaching us how to
do it so fast. We are all going to be fact
masters with our math facts. Those are my
favorite memories from Second Grade.
Third Grade

How To Write A Story With Writing Tools
By Daisy Fuentes
Mr. Cabell made a Story Folder for fictional
narratives. Then he created pencils for
writing. Mr. Cabell made a list of verbs,
adverbs, adjectives, similes, and a lot of
organizers to help us. I almost forgot that Mr.
Cabell had personal narratives. That means
you can write about someone else if you
wanted to. Mr. Cabell said that fictional
narratives aren’t real. You use a lot of your
imagination. If you need help for writing a
story… use these writing tools like the pencil
and the story folder. First grade, second
grade, and third grade can use them for
writing. These tools will help you.
matches took place after school. The Mathletix
match usually lasted 1 hour and 45 minutes.
Our coaches were Mrs. Tellez and Mr.
DiGennaro. My favorite part in Mathletix was
the Award Ceremony because we all got
awards. At the end of the ceremony, we
heard our school won 4th place overall. Also,
the 3rd grade team won 2nd place. We
earned a plaque. It was a great time to be in
Mathletix. I like to thank all of my teachers that
I had over the years including Mrs. Tellez and
Mr. DiGennaro for teaching me so many things
in math. Also, my goal is to be in Mathletix for
all three years: third, fourth, and fifth grade just
like my sister Kim Tran.
My Writing Journey
By: Raul Calderon
As I journeyed through 3rd grade, my teacher
Mr. Cabell created writing tools. We all tried
them and all liked them. Mr. Cabell made
pencils, journals, and story folders. At times, it
became difficult to write and plan but
throughout the year I learned many kinds of
strategies to help. I just know I can become a
writing master. I did write for the CMTS but I still
need lots of practice. Mr. Cabell is the best
teacher I know. He taught me poems and
writing strategies. I also learned from Mr.
Cabell’s writing packets. I liked the packets
because it helped me memorize my planning
for my stories. Mr. Cabell’s packets also helped
me write down ideas. So far 3rd grade was the
best because the children had to respect
each other. Thank you Mr. Cabell for teaching
me how to write.
Mathletix Year
By: Kimlyn Vo
I had made the Mathletix team with five
other friends. They were Jason, Daniela,
Ryleigh, Monserrat, Patrick, and also me,
Kimlyn. We competed against other schools.
Our third grade team won 5 out of 6
matches. Still it was a pretty great team. In
Mathletix, when we competed against other
schools, we took tests like an individual and a
group test. Also, before we took the
individual test, we had a snack because the
My Year in Mathletix
By Jason Albert
It was the middle of the year and papers
came in about Mathletix. I was so shocked I
even got a paper. After I took the test, I was
picked!!! Then it was our first practice. You
had to be in your grade group, which was
3rd, 4th, and 5th. All my friends were there;
Kimlyn, Patrick, Monserrat, Daniela and last
but not least Ryleigh. When I got there I was
ecstatic. My mind was racing. Am I superior
enough? Am I going to be excellent like the
other students? Those were the questions I
was thinking. When Mathletix finished, I didn’t
want to leave the first day. When it was time
for the award ceremony my heart was
beating 3 times faster than usual. I got a
medal, ice sculpture and 2 certificates. For
third grade we earned a plaque for 2 nd
place with most points. I was so excited. We
got 4th place in wins and loses in the whole
grade. It’s been a wonderful journey. Thank
you Mathletix coaches. It’s been wonderful
working with you.

Cool School News!
Find out what is happening at Mr.Bryers’ class
in May!
May 3rd we went to see fully trained sled
dogs. The awesome hardworking dogs loved
to play and be frisky.
Next we went to a sweet yet hot treat at
Les’s ice cream.
We bought our ice cream like chocolate and
vanilla. Then we ate our ice cream on the
way and dashed off to awesome
Washington Park! Our teacher had Carmel
teacher special! That sure sounds tasty.
Then party at two places at the party in the
USA and tons of rocking songs to dance at
the CMT dance AND PROM NIGHT! Students
were having the most fun and partying out.
Also in Mr. Bryers class we did author studies.
We read Roald Dahl author of George’s
Marvelous Medicine and The Witches. The
whole class laughed and shivered in horror at
this story.
On June 7th all 3rd graders went outside to
play kickball except for those people who
had office referrals.
There were colorful
plastic bases. First we all sat down to listen to
directions. After that we started the game.
Mrs. Higley’s and Mr. Bryers’ classes kicked
first. Mr. Cabell’s and Miss Wilson’s classes
were outfielders. The first kicker was Izaia. It
was amazing. He kicked it so high. Next up
was Layla. It was so high. After everyone
had a turn we switched positions. The first
kicker was Andy. He kicked it so high. Next up
was Daisy. She kicked it a bit higher. After
every single person had a turn kicking, we
lined up with our teachers. We were so happy.
It was fun.
Reporter – Laura Mendez
Students could spend 100 tickets for the block
party that was held on June 10 th! At the block
party there was a sponge relay, tug of war,
beach balls, music, and dancing. There was
also a sack race. There were lots of kids at the
block party. Everyone had so much fun! But, I
bet the third graders will be the most
enthusiastic.

Fourth Grade
A. DiGennaro, K. Fedora, F. Wagner
One of our favorite memories from fourth
grade is going to Hartford, the state capital of
Connecticut. One thing we liked about this trip
was that there was a wishing chair there. The
wishing chair is made out of our state tree, the
Charter Oak. Some people believe that if you
make a wish while sitting in the chair, it will
come true. We all got to sit in the chair and
make a wish. We also saw the colt shop and
the flag room while we were passing by. The
flag room is a room with all the state flags of
the fifty states.
Another fun memory is about the spring
concert. We liked that concert because we
got to be in the mini play of how to make
good choices. Another reason why we liked
that memory is that parents must have been
proud at the concert.
The best activity we did in fourth grade was
multiplication Madness. Mrs. Fedora’s class
and Mr. DiGennaro’s class competed with
multiplication facts. The two finalists in our
room were Gillian and Citlalli but the one to
win was Citlalli.
Our last memory of fourth grade is science with
Mrs. Fedora’s class and Mr. D’s class. We liked
working together with other students to do
experiments. In one of the experiments we
found out that when you rub a balloon on your
hair it will make your hair stand up when you
try to take the balloon off and that is called
static shock. These are our favorite memories
from fourth grade.
By Evan Adamowicz, Gillian Galotti and
Brandon Hernandez
Henry: My favorite fourth grade memory is
math.
Justice: My favorite fourth grade memory is
meeting Ms. Wagner for the first time because I
knew she was going to be a great teacher.
My favorite memory for 4th grade is fraction
war. Fraction war is a math game, where you
compare fractions to see witch one is the
largest. You use cards to make the fraction
that is the largest. The largest fraction gets a
point. This is my favorite memory because we
had 4 or 5 different teams. We played
against Mr. D and other classmates. The
winning team got 15 minutes on the
computer. Moza’s team won the first time
and Markesse’s team won the second time.
This is my favorite memory because we
learned a new math game, won 15 minutes
on the computer, and played against our
friends. This memory will stay with me forever
because we did it with Mr.D.
Kiara: My favorite fourth grade memory is
meeting Ms. Wagner - I knew she would be a
great teacher.

Fifth Grade
S. Owen, A. Abbott, R. Tellez
The following newsletter article was
prepared in conjunction with support from
Mrs. Tellez with writing from the following
students: Luis Howard-Roman, Carlos Beltran,
Nathan Flis and Stephanie Manning
As the 2009-2010 school year comes to
an end we look back at all the fun -filled and
exciting activities we did this year. The fifth
grade classes of Miss Abbott, Mrs. Owen and
Mrs. Tellez completed the DARE Program,
sang in the spring concert, had a fun CMT
Dance, took a field trip to Mystic Seaport and
visited our prospective middle school s for
next year.
We enjoyed these special
activities and numerous others.
Did you know that the fifth graders at
Roger
Sherman
celebrated
D.A.R.E.
graduation on June 4, 2010? The event was
well attended by many friends and family
members. All graduates received DARE tshirts and certificates.
Several students
received accolades for their DARE essays.
Christopher Perez, from Mrs. Tellez’s class, was
recognized as being the top DARE student
from Roger Sherman. The grade five students
worked very hard to get to this point. Some
of the lessons that Officer Tom Cirillo shared
encompassed such topics as avoiding drugs
and alcohol.
We also had meaningful
discussions on what bullying is; bullying is
when you harm someone physically or
emotionally more than once. If you are
repeatedly being mean to someone, you are
considered a bully.
These lessons were
Another favorite memory from fifth
grade that we will always remember will be
our trip to Mystic Seaport. We learned a lot
that day. Many students found the information
shared
about
the
Amistad
especially
noteworthy. Lucky for us, the Amistad had just
gotten back into port the day we arrived
after a long journey to South America.
What do you know about the Amistad?
We learned that the Amistad was a boat that
carried slaves to Cuba. The slaves rebelled
and killed most of the crew. However, the
slaves saved two crew members and forced
them to navigate the ship back to Africa.
During the day the ship sailed east but at night
the two crew members sailed the ship west.
Eventually, the boat was found off the
Connecticut shore and an important trial took
place. This is significant event in Connecticut
history and you can find out more about it at
the Mystic Seaport.
Can you believe that many students
also got to throw a harpoon into the water
and others boarded the Captain W.H.
Morgan, the last surviving whaling ship? What
a great learning experience for all in
attendance!
Lastly, we look forward to the final
days of school. We have an upcoming walk
hard. You get to work on lots of fun
projects with partners, but the work is hard,
like math.
Leslie Gonzalez: My favorite memory of
fifth grade was the PBS Prom because I
really liked the music and hanging out with
my friends.
Kiara Harris: I enjoyed being a part of the
safety patrol because it gave me the
experience of being more mature. I got to
work with Ms. Muir in the computer lab.
to Les’ Dairy and a school wide field day.
We would like to invite friends and family to
our promotion ceremony being held on June
15, 2010 at 6:00p.m. We hope to see you
there. Come celebrate with us!
Jackie Boucher: Fifth grade was a good
year because there were lots of great
activities like the walk to Les’.
Matthew Buteau: I really liked the CMT
Dance because it was a lot of fun to
hang out with my friends and dance!
Noelle Couture: I was really proud to
have won an award for Project Excel!
Isaiah Davis: I really enjoyed the activities
in fifth grade like playing kickball outside,
the science activities with making snow,
and the dry ice experiment at Halloween!
I won the Superintendent’s Award. I like
taking part in the March of Dimes reading
challenge.
Victoria Footit: My favorite memory was
the CMT Dance because I got to
hangout with friends and dance. I also
liked the science experiments that Miss
Abbott did with us.
Jayden Fuqua:
Fifth grade is fun but
Thomas Hatch: I liked that I got to work
with different teachers who helped me
with the hard work in fifth grade.
Joshua Hernandez: Mrs. Owen was my
favorite teacher because she was always
great, thoughtful and loveable!
John Kronberg: Fifth grade is awesome
because of the teachers! It’s great that
we get more responsibility and we get to
do more fun projects!
Ashlie Luna: Something I remember is
when we were working on bar graph
projects. One of the students picked Lady
GaGa songs as their topic. Everyone in the
class started singing the songs!
Jalen Malone: I really liked the Snowball
Dance. I was named King of the dance. I
liked the music they played and I got to
dance and hangout with my friends.
Josue (JJ) Medina: My favorite part of fifth
grade was that I got to hangout with all of
my friends. I had fun spending time with
them this year before we head off to
different middle schools.
Alex Oquendo: When I think back to fifth
grade I will remember when I hurt my leg
because I never hurt myself that seriously
before. I also had the best teacher ever!
Jeremy People: Mrs. Owen is a very fun
teacher. You should look forward to
being in her room and all the activities
she will plan. Plus all the treats!
Marc Rao: I really liked that Mrs. Owen
gave us candy when we were testing or
when we were quiet and behaving.
Halloween party when we watched
Monsters Vs Aliens and Tamra’s Nana
made us goody bags. (Cody)
My favorite fifth grade memory is the C.M.T
dance because we got to dance on
stage. (Giancarlos)
My favorite memory is the C.M.T dance
because it was fun. (Chad)
Ashley Rivera: Mrs. Owen is a very nice
teacher. Mrs. Owen’s son Tyler came in
to visit. He was very shy but our class tried
to make him less shy.
My favorite fifth grade memory was the TPT
carnival because I got to hang out with my
friends and go on the slip and slide. (Kevin)
Rosa Rosado: I liked when we had the
CMT Dance. All the kids were laughing
