Roberts.-MAJOR BYAM M. L. ROBERTS, J.P., Ardmore, Passage W est, co. Cork; son of th e
late Richard Roberts, of Armore, and Henrietta, daughter of Robert White, of Glengariff Castle;
born March loth, 1863: educated at Clifton College, Bristol. Entere.d the Army in the late 3rd
Royal Munster Fusiliers, and served in th e Boer war; was invalided home, and received Medal
and three clasps, Orange River and Cape Colony. Justice of th e P eace for co. Cerk; farms his own
land and breeds Shorthorns and Border Leicester sheep. R ecreations: hunting, and boa ting;
member of the South Union Foxhounds and County Club .

Tipperary Grammar School. Entered the Army in the Army
Veterinary Corps in 1890, and passed into th e Army R emount
Department in India, and is at present resident there; se rved
in the South African war, and received Medal 'and four
clasps, and invalided home in IgOr.

Royal Cork Garrison Artillery, afterw a rds transferring to the Royal E nginee rs as subaltern, an d
returned to the Cork Artillery as Captain Instructor in gunnery; is now engaged in yacht and
motor launc'1 buildin s , and is also contractor to the Government. Recreations : yachting, and
m arine m otoring ; was the found er of the P assage West Fi re Brigade, which has bee n very
successful in winnin g several competitions.

P arliament for the City of Cork as a Nationalist in 1905;
re-elected in 1906, and again re-elected at the Gen eral Election
in J anuary, 1910.; unsu ccessfully co ntested the Constituency
at the General Election of December , 1910; entered the Corp ora tion of the City of Cor k, in 1883; wa s Mayor of the City
fo r the two years, 1893 and 1894 ; on retiring was prese nted
with a magnificent service of silver a nd an illumin ated album
containing sign a tures of nearly 400 of the chief citizens of Cork
and County, with an Address commemorating his ser vices as

d eputed by the citizens of Cork to go to Berlin to present the Cup given by the City of Cork
to the Berlin Rowing Club, as a souvenir of their visit to Cork, in connection with which h e w as
elected an H ono rary Life Member of the Berlin Eo-.ving Club, and was t r eat ed as th e gues t of th e
Emp eror; Lord :lVIayor in r 904 ; entertained in th at year Cardin al Vanutelli, L egat e of t~ e Pope,
and was in r ecognition decorat ed with the Cross, " Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice," by Pius X . ; h as
b een a life long collector of antiques and curios, and has amassed a priceless and vari ed collection,
which forms a special department (on loan) at the Cork School of Art; is the only citizen of Cork
who h as been Mayor and Lord May or of the city.
