Case Study Discussion
This section is a new approach to interagency collaboration and done so in the spirit of Keep Them Safe
principles. Each interagency meeting will provide members with an opportunity to bring complex cases
challenging the work being done with the people they support. It is hoped that through sharing ideas,
resources and knowledge we will offer participants with new options for the people we work with.
It is important that we continue to focus on current and open complex cases, so that the services involved
in the interagency can give input and assist with referral pathways. In future meetings we will focus on
these current cases and also be sure to align our conversations with Keep Them Safe principles.
For more information on the Keep Them Safe guidelines, or if you are unsure about whether your case
study is in keeping with the guidelines, please approach the Youth Development Officer. It is also beneficial
to write out the de-identified case study before coming to the meeting, and send a copy to the YDO for the
minutes and to be proof-read.
This month’s case study has come from Maitland High School
---We have a group of year 7,8.9 girls whose anti-social behaviour is beginning to impact many
others in their grades. These 8 girls never attend class (will come and sign in and then catch
the train to Newy or hang out in the stairs, behind the canteen etc), they often do/sell drugs at
school, most of the girls have self- harming behaviours, live with anxiety/depression, two of
the girls have a parent with a terminal illness, all but one are unwilling to access mental health
support like Headspace/CAMHS, several are ok with seeing School Counsellor/Katie. The girls
are frequently involved in fights at school or in the community, or other illegal activities such
as stealing cars.
Although several individual strategies have been implemented at school to support them (time
out cards, option of the PLC (Positive Learning Class - small class in library with Teacher and
Teacher's aide), partial attendance plans or small group programs focusing on social skills,
healthy relationships and mental health there has been little change in this group/situation.
---Options for this young person:
Jalam: Its possible for Jalam to run small targeted groups to discuss things, talk openly, get them in same
environment together, see group dynamic. Jalam could organise with Katie
Katie: Seasons for Growth runs at school. There is also groups at school with Felicity (AFC).
Katie: Girls are interested in looking after themselves and talking about the future
Bron: Sparkle program with Joblink Plus- now closing down
MHS offering the Shine Program
Dan: YRG thinking of doing different holiday program's either this term or in Christmas holidays, art music
etc that is just fun.
Dan can come in and do some small group work
See if Joey from Mindaribba is available- just opened drop-in centre at Mindaribba.
If you think of any more suggestions please contact Katie Brown (details on the attendance
sheet)

Youth Engagement Activity
Worry Hat
Is a game for high school students, good for first year in order to help them with their worries or fears they have
about school. The ice breaker is a great at helping students overcome their fears and worries by receiving
suggestions and possible solutions from their peers, as well as offering suggestions/solutions to their peers, which
can serve as a way to empower students.
What You Will Need
Materials: A hat cards/or pieces of paper, writing utensils
Time: approximately 15 minutes
There will be a circle of chairs for students to sit on.
Set up worries hat (4mins): Distribute cards or pieces of paper and a writing utensil
The tone could be set by introducing the topic of fear/worry explains how it is normal to feel like that and to have
worries about high school.
Instructions.




Each student to anonymously write a fear or worry they have about school
Put in Hat
Everyone takes a turn to pick out someone else’s worry
Then read the concern out and attempt to explain what the person who wrote the worry means, trying to
describe his/her understanding/reflection of the person’s emotions associated with the worry
After all fears have been read and elaborated, discuss as a whole group what some of the common fears were.
BEACH BALL ICE BREAKER
Blow up the beach ball. The beach ball has 6 segments , in each segment write a question here are some examples:


What has been the high light of your week?
What is the yuckiest food you have eaten?



What makes you feel happy?
If you had a time machine where would you go?
What color is your bathroom?
Each student takes a turn throwing the ball to another person. The person that catches the ball answers the question
where their thumb lands. After answering the question they throw the ball to another person who has not had a turn
at answering a question.
