Superbowl Sunday celebrates its 50th anniversary
Commercial popularity draws in crowd

The Super Bowl has not
only been the highlight event
for NFL teams across the state,
it also generates huge amounts
of advertising each year. The
commercials for the Super Bowls
are arguably the best commercials
of the year. Many different types of
businesses including automobile
companies, lager brewers, and
popular food chains try to
advertise their products during
the most watched television event
of the year.
According to Forbes.com,
an average 30-second ad-spot
during the Super Bowl broadcast
cost 4.5 million U.S. dollars in
2015. That’s about $150,000
per second. Though the cost is
high just to advertise for a half
a minute, Forbes also says the
average Super Bowl commercial
can generate up to $10 million.

This year marks the 50th birthday of the
Super Bowl. Through the last half century
the Super Bowl has gained an interesting
background and history.
Originally, the Super Bowl was started
as part of a merger deal between the NFL
and AFL in 1967 to determine the world
champion. The winner from each the NFL
and AFL, who were rival professional
football leagues at the time, would compete
in the Super Bowl. This continued until the
two leagues merged in 1970 to form the NFL
as we know it now.
It was the AFL founder and owner of the
Kansas City Chiefs, Lamar Hunt, who named
the Super Bowl. He jokingly suggested the
name after watching a group of kids play
with a “Super Ball”. Since that day the name
has stuck and each year two teams compete
in the Super Bowl.
The first two Super Bowls were
dominated by the Green Bay Packers. The
Packers were coached by Vince Lombardi
during these Super Bowl victories. Because
of his dominance and coaching ability, the
trophy that is handed out each year is named
after him and is called the Lombardi Trophy.
The Lombardi Trophy is made completely of
sterling silver and displays a regulation size
football in kicking position.
Since the Lombardi trophy has been
handed out certain teams have dominated
the championship game. The Pittsburgh
Steelers have racked up the most wins since
the Super Bowl started as they have won
six of the championships. Both the San
Francisco 49er’s and Dallas Cowboys have
good records in the championship game as
they both have five Super Bowl victories.
The half century old tradition of the
Super Bowl has a rich history of teams
who seemed destined to struggle in the
championship game. The Denver Broncos
have made seven Super Bowl appearances
but have only won two Super Bowls. Other
teams have struggled as well. Currently there
are 13 NFL teams that have not won a Super
Bowl.
All of the history and background
behind the Super Bowl make the game even
more important. With half of a century
already complete, the next half century
should be just as interesting.
classic commercials have touched
the hearts of people nationwide
and still continue to today.
“Wendy’s ‘Where’s The
Beef ’ commercial is still definitely
one of my all time favorites,”
Garret Ragland ‘17 said.
Other people prefer newer
commercials that tend to be very
emotional.
“I love the 2013
‘Clydesdales Brotherhood’ from
Budweiser because it’s very
heartfelt and I love when the
man and his horse reunite,” Sarah
McCown ‘18 said.
According to U.S. Today’s
Ad Meter, last year’s most popular
commercial was Budweiser’s “Lost
Dog” commercial that featured a
golden Lab finding his way home
with the help of the Budweiser
Clydesdales, but not before
encountering a coyote.
Other popular
commercials from last year
include, Fiat “Blue Pill,” Always
“Like A Girl,” Mercedes-Benz
“Fable,” and Doritos “When Pigs
Fly.”
There is still a lot of buzz
from commercials from last year.
“My favorite commercial
is the Snicker’s ‘Brady Bunch’
commercial from last year because
it’s really funny and I love eating
Snickers,” Kristin Branson ‘19 said.
This year, expectations are
high as the 50th Super Bowl is
just around the corner. According
to Adage.com, new commercials
include Pokemon, who are
celebrating their 20th anniversary,
Mountain Dew, its first Super
Bowl spot since 2012, and Skittles,
following up on their Super Bowl
ad from 2015 that included an arm
wrestling match.
Though most people turn
to the Super Bowl for the battle
between the AFC and the NFC,
they can be assured that they
won’t complain when the game is
stopped by a few short messages.
