Page 5……….See More at… The Dodo bird was a non-flying bird that is rumored to have become extinct because it was easy to catch. They were easy to catch because they were not afraid of humans. Some people say that humans caught and ate the Dodo Birds. Even though they are one of the most famous animals ever to become extinct, nobody knows quite what the dodo looked like or what its habits were. We do not know much about the dodo. All we really know is that the dodo is extinct. Today I found out.com An artist’s rendering of a dodo bird The Thylacine, also known as the Tasmanian tiger (or Tasmanian wolf), has a tail much like a kangaroo. It also looks a lot like a dog. It had stripes too. That is how it got the nickname The Tasmanian tiger. One of its stripes would go down its rear thigh. The exact open jaw was measured to be 120 degrees. The thylacine had an extraordinary mouth too. It can open its mouth almost to 180 degrees. The Thylacine still has the widest open mouth of a mammal ever known to man but when they compared, a snake could open its mouth wider! They were hunted to extinction by human settlers. The last thylacine died in a zoo in 1936. Epic creature of the month The open mouth of the thylacine What many people call the short-faced kangaroo (also known as the Simothenerus), was most unlike many other kangaroos that we have today. They had long arms and fingers, which they would use to reach a tree branch down to eat the leaves that not many other animals had eaten because it was high up. They used their strong jaws to chew vegetation. The face of a simothenerus was much like a koala. But that koala was mixed with the bottom half of a giant kangaroo Mega fauna.com A drawing of a simothenerus Most unlike most other kangaroos the simothenerus had one toe on each foot! Some people will do fund raisers to help endangered animals! Some animal species are extinct because their habitat was destroyed by humans. Or, sometimes they become extinct because they die of water or air pollution caused by humans. Other times the animals were hunted for food, skins, horns, or other valuable things that the animals had. National Geographic.com The endangered Galapagos tortoise Most of these things were caused by humans. We have to help keep them from becoming extinct; not try to make them go extinct. Here are three things you can do to help today. Number one, try not to overuse fertilizer. Runoff from excess fertilizer enters waterways and poisons wildlife. Second, try to leave nature how you find it. By not disturbing animal habitats, the animals will continue to thrive in their normal environment. And finally, get to know more about animals so you can help them. By making houses for endangered animals that might even be it your own backyard. See more at . . .
