The shocking history
• 1791 – Luigi Galvani discovers that muscle
contraction could be induced with an
electrical current. Studied with frogs legs
• 1850 – Carl Ludwig applied electrical current
to a dogs heart. It quivered.
• 1899 – swiss physiologists, Prevost and
Batelli demonstrated a small shock could
induce VF in dogs and a large shock reverse
the condition, or defibrillate the veins.
• 1947 – first recorded use of a defibrillator on
a human was by Claude Beck on a 14 year
old boy.
• 1965 Frank Pantridge, Northern Irish
cardiologist invented the portable defibrillator.
• However it was not until 1990 that a portable
defib. was installed on every UK ambulance.
Now
• Defibrillators can now analyse the heart
rhythm, by themselves and give voice
prompts. Meaning people with basic
knowledge can use them.
