LEARNING OUTCOMES
At the end of Foundation Year, pupils should be able to:
LISTENING WITH UNDERSTANDING
•
Identify sounds of some vowels ( e.g. ai, aa, i, ou)
•
Identify sounds of some common words used daily ( e.g. aasiriyar)
•
Enjoy listening to short and simple rhymes, poems and songs
•
Begin to understand how the language is spoken through small aural texts (poems and songs)
•
Follow simple instructions (e.g. come in, open the door) given orally
•
Demonstrate the ability to understand and respond to simple statements, questions and
comments.
SPEAKING
•
Pronounce clearly some vowels ( e.g. mesai, amma)
•
Participate in recitation of rhymes, poems and singing with enjoyment
•
Begin to engage in simple oral activities (e.g. vanakkam, nandri)
•
Speak clearly about self (e.g. name, age)
•
Ask and answer questions about pictures with support
READING WITH UNDERSTANDING

Show interest in pre-reading exercises

Adopt good posture while reading

Match sounds to their corresponding vowels

Begin to use simple strategies (e.g. cues and word spacing) to read printed words

GRAMMAR, VOCABULARY AND SENTENCE STRUCTURE

Recognise common nouns related to everyday life through picture recognition (e.g. common
colours, family, school items, body parts, animals, birds, fruits, vegetables, flowers)

Expand common nouns into simple phrases (a big/small table)
•
Recognise common sight words (e.g. boy, girl)
•
Recognise simple action words (e.g. walk, come, go, run, swim) by matching words with
pictures
