This day is also known as Saint Valentine’s Day or The Feast of Saint Valentine. Now your thinking who’s Saint Valentine. Well Saint Valentine is a very important person from ancient time. He was born in Terni, Italy. Saint Valentine, officially Saint Valentine of Rome, is a widely recognized thirdcentury Roman saint commemorated on February 14th and associated since the High Middle Ages with a tradition of courtly love. St. Valentine's Day began as a liturgical celebration of one or more early Christian saints named Valentinus. Several martyrdom stories were invented for the various Valentines that belonged to February 14th, and added to later martyrologies. Also added on later to the date was the mythical “God” Cupid. https://www.google.com/search? q=valentine%27s%20day&rlz=1CAASUE_enUS677US677&oq=valentine%27s%20day&aqs=chrome..69i57j69i61l2.6605j0j7&sourceid=chrome&es 8&safe=active&ssui=on By DMahri Stratton Pandas~ Pandas are some of the most fascinating creatures alive. Not only are they beautiful, but they are also very smart. The giant panda is one of the most beloved in the world too. But it is also one of the most endangered. With only about 1,0002,000 living in the wild pandas are still alive. Giant pandas are recognized for their black and white fur. Their ears, legs, eyes, muzzle, and shoulders are black, while the rest of their body is white. https://mail.davenport.k12.ia.us/owa/?ae=Item&t=IPM.Note&id=RgAAAACuq9deZra7QZN%2bqhzkDw0wBwDmrb0XJSHtTood9sd%2bhqNIAARKcvUYAABjE%2bZbewZdSqdfEzhb81p0AACdaaooAAAJ&a=Print&… 2/9 5/31/2016 Sudlow Student Newsletter Eblast Their warm thick fur keeps them warm in wet mountains and in rain. Giant pandas are between 60100 cm (23ft) tall and between 12 m (46ft) long when on all fours. They can weigh about 100115 kg (220250 lb) with females being smaller and males being larger. Giant pandas can reach maturity and can reproduce when they are 48 years old. Although female pandas can only become pregnant 23 days each spring. Because of this small time line pandas call each other through scents and calls that are similar to goats or sheep, and not normal roars like bears. When a new born panda is born it is born blind with hairless, tiny, and only weighing 85140 g (35 oz). The baby panda, or cub, cannot move till it is 3 months old, so until then it is completely helpless. In this time the mother is very protective of her cub. Wildlife reserves are setup in parts of China to help the pandas survive and give them a home for their family. Researchers are continuing to study the pandas to see how they live their normal lives. ~Megan M. Recipe For Any Special Event These are the ingredients for the recipe brownie mix, butterscotch chips or caramel delite cookies, thin mints cookies, and chocolate frosting. You need a big bowl and a long brownie container to cook it in. First, you make the brownie batter (ingredients on the box). Then when it is all mixed up, you take out the butterscotch chips or caramel delite cookies (crush the thin mint cookies and the caramel delite cookies before putting in the brownie batter). Then you put them in, but not all of them. Second, you mix it up again to get them spread out in the batter. Then put it in the brownie container, put it in the oven (it will say what temperature you should put it at on the brownie box and the time), then you set the time and wait. Finally, you pull it out from the oven and then warm up the frosting in the microwave for 1015 seconds. Then pull it out and start frosting the brownies once you have done that, then put the rest of thin mints caramel delites or butterscotch chips on top of the brownie or brownies (you can make two batches). Then cut it up and let it cool off and when it’s done cooling off you put the top on it and then your done. When I picked it up, two tickets fell out. I looked at them and saw that they were tickets to my favorite movie. I brought them home and showed my mom. She said that I could bring a friend and go. The day when me and my friend went to the movies was so fun. We bought popcorn and soda, and went to the mall afterwards. We had so much fun. Then, we went to the park and played. We went home at ten o’clock and had a sleepover. That morning, I woke up and went downstairs to eat. Movie tickets were lying on the counter. I picked them up and looked at them. They were the tickets from the dream! I started to wonder if the first part wasn’t a part of the dream. I wondered if I should keep them or find the person who bought them and give them back. My mom came downstairs and saw me holding the tickets. She said that she put them in a notebook, but my sister put the notebook in her backpack, mistaking the notebook for ones of hers. The notebook fell out because she forgot to zip her backpack shut. Then, I came, saw the notebook, picked it up, and out fell the tickets. Mom saw that they were the tickets that she had bought and was super worried. once I went to sleep, she took the tickets out of my room and put them on the counter. She meant to put them in her nightstand, but she forgot. She said that she wanted it to be a surprise for me for being good. She said that I could still go with her. When we went to the movies, we did the same things that me and my friend did in my dream. We had as much fun as I did in my dream, too. That night, I was too happy to go to sleep. Mom and I stayed up really late and watched movies until we fell asleep. By: Lauren Frahm Have A Sweet Holiday I hope you know what time of day it is because there is love in the air. Yes, that’s right it’s Valentine’s Day soon. Did you know that it was created by a guy named Bishop Valentine in the Roman Era? It is also bad luck to sign a Valentine's Day card. About 1 million Valentine’s Day cards are exchanged a year. There is a holiday for singles called singles awareness day or S.A.D for short. The x in xo was decided to be the kiss sign from the middle ages. Instead of choosing the one you love as a Valentine, men and women drew from a bowl to decide their Valentine in the middle ages. More than 3 million heart shaped boxes of chocolate are sold a year. Seventythree percent of people buy flowers and only twentythree percent of them are women. Over one billion dollars is spent on Valentine’s Day for cards, chocolate, and flowers. Over 189 million flowers are sold for Valentine’s Day. Did you also know that teachers receive the most cards, followed by children, mothers, and fathers? These memories help the elephants to survive in many ways, especially during dry seasons when they need to lead their herd to a watering hole. They can remember what animals live or hunt at what watering hole so they don’t go there and get hurt, or even die. Although animals at watering holes aren’t the only things hunting them. Humans are hunting elephants for their ivory tusks. Because of this, elephants are going extinct. Scientists have found a way to make the ivory tusk unsellable without really hurting the animal. They use a pink dye they use on postit notes to dye the tusks pink, because of this it make the ivory unsellable. Now the elephant population is starting to rise back up! Today there are about 450,00700,000 African elephants and between 35,00040,00 Asian elephants. Fun Facts about Elephants: The tusk of an African elephants can grow to be 10 feet long and weigh up to 90 kilometers Elephants can detect rain 150 miles (241 kilometers) away Elephants are the only mammals that cannot jump Elephants can live up to 70 years Their trunks have 100,000 muscle The average weight of an elephant heart is 2746 pounds By: Megan M. President’s Day Presidents day is on Feb.15th to honor our leaders and their service but specifically made for George Washington’s birthday. Even though George Washington’s birthday is on Feb. 22nd, we still celebrate it on Feb. 15th. The Creation While Washington’s Birthday was an unofficial observance for most of the 1800s, it was not until the late 1870s that it became a federal holiday. Senator Stephen Wallace Dorsey of Arkansas was the first to propose the measure, and in 1879.Then President Rutherford B. Hayes made it into a law. That law mostly applied to people who lived in the district of Columbia. In 1885 it expanded to the whole country. Now it is recognized as a popular federal holiday.
