June 30, 2016 Turn Boring Road Trips Into Fun Math Lessons Adults use math to plan trips all the time. When kids help, they learn that math is both useful and fun. Here are some math concepts that trip planning involves: • Addition. Have your teen use a road map to determine possible routes. Add up how many miles you’ll travel by going different ways. See which route is the shortest. • Decimals. Have your teen figure out how much it will cost to fill up your tank. • Division. If your trip is 145 miles, for example, ask your teen to divide this by how many miles per hour you’ll average to find out how long the trip will take. • Estimation. Notice signs that say how far away your exit is. Have your teen estimate how long it will take to get there. • Measurement. Have your teen convert kilometers to miles or vice versa. One mile equals 1.61 kilometers, and 1 kilometer equals .62 miles. brought to you by Parent Connection Virginia Beach City Public Schools Copyright 2016 The Parent Institute, a Division of NIS Inc.
