Featured Recipe
German Chocolate Pie
1 cup sugar
1 Tbsp. flour
2 Tbsp. cocoa
2 eggs
3 Tbsp. butter, softened
2/3 cup milk
1 tsp. vanilla
(three-fourths) cup coconut
one third cup pecans, chopped
Pinch of salt
Mix all ingredients well and pour into two regular pie
crusts or one deep dish pie crust. Bake at 350 degrees
for 35 to 45 minutes.
Multi-Grammy winner Emmylou Harris, who has
collaborated with such notables as Johnny Cash,
Willie Nelson, Roy Orbison, Bonnie Raitt, George
Jones and Mark Knopfler (pictured with Harris here),
will be featured in an October 21 performance
through SkyBest’s sponsorship of Appalachian State
University’s Performing Arts Series.

SkyBest Announces Sponsorship of ASU
Performing Arts Series
SkyBest Communications is
pleased to announce that it will
be a major corporate sponsor of
Appalachian State University’s
(ASU) Performing Arts Series.
This year’s sponsorship will
feature a fall performance by
Emmylou Harris on Saturday,
October 21, in the ASU
Convocation Center.
The Performing Arts Series is an annual presentation
of the university’s Office of Arts and Cultural
Programs, whose mission is to enrich, expand and
enhance the cultural climate of Appalachian State
University and the regional community through the
ongoing presentation of intellectually and aesthetically
challenging programs which may not otherwise
be available. These programs seek to supplement,
support and enhance the ongoing academic
curriculum at Appalachian State, while expanding
audiences’ awareness of and accessibility to the arts.
SkyBest’s corporate sponsorship supports our regional
university and helps to keep ticket prices for series
events at a more reasonable level. Additionally,
special discounts to SkyBest’s sponsored performance

Emmylou Harris has been hailed as a major figure
in several of America’s most important musical
movements of the past three decades. A steadfast
supporter of roots music and a skilled interpreter of
compelling songs, she also has been associated with
a diverse array of admiring collaborators. Harris’
contributions to country-rock, the bluegrass revival,
folk music and the Americana movement are widely
lauded, and in recent years, she also has carved out a
sound that is uniquely her own.

Since 2000, she has appeared on the “Oh, Brother,
Where Art Thou” soundtrack and its spin-off “Down
from the Mountain” tour, collaborated with the
Chieftains on their “Down the Old Plank Road” album
and television special, recorded a duet album with
Mark Knopfler, recorded a duet with Rodney Crowell
for a Louvin Brothers tribute CD, performed with the
Nitty Gritty Dirt Band’s “Will the Circle Be Unbroken
III” CD and sang back-up on albums for Sheryl Crow,
Tracy Chapman, the Dixie Chicks, Patty Griffin, Patty
Loveless, Delbert McClinton, Jim Lauderdale, Pam
Tillis and Nancy Griffith, among others.
Billboard magazine honored Emmylou Harris with its
prestigious “Century Award” in 1999 “to acknowledge
the uncommon excellence of (her) still-unfolding body
of work.”
