Lyndon State College Upward Bound January 2016 Student Newsletter Building Expectations, Changing Realities Seniors and Parents: Financial Aid Meeting Sunday, January 17th 1:00-4:00 pm This year we will once again have a financial aid meeting for just our seniors and their parents to go over your various financial aid forms and to answer your specific questions. This is a mandatory meeting and we expect all of our seniors and a parent to attend! We will meet in an LSC computer lab (LAC 411) and help you not only fill in the blanks but also have you complete and send your Financial Aid forms off at that time. You and your parents should already have your FAFSA ID numbers (the par ent or guar dian who is br inging you). When we submit your FAFSA online it will be processed in 3–5 days! You will save time and the form will be more accurate. Start collecting your tax information now and hopefully you will have most of it together by our meeting on Sunday, January 17th. If you will not have filed your 2015 taxes yet by then (most of us have not) then bring your previous year returns and we will estimate based on those and any big changes your family has had this year. Fill out and bring the FAFSA worksheet attached to this newsletter before the meeting, and you will be able to fill in almost all of the information asked on the website! Call if you have questions—this is the most important paperwork you will fill out! And know that we will work through this process together. See you on the 17 th! Happy New Year UB! Recommit to Your Educational Goals Congratulations on completing another year of preparation towards your post secondary goals. Over the last year, almost all of our Upward Bound students have worked very hard to get the most out of their education. Think about it—you all spent the summer preparing for college, collectively we volunteered more than 3,600 hours this year, and our students are getting the money they need for college by following our advice. We are very proud of your accomplishments, the excellent decisions that you are making, and the commitment you’ve made to your future. To those students who are still striving to be better, now is a great time to add education to your New Year resolutions. Recommit yourselves to not just do well in your classes, but to thrive in your classes. Be the best student that you can be. Make sure that you complete all assignments to the best of your ability, become an active member (a leader) of your col*** New *** lege prep classes, and start building a relationship with your school 2016 Summer Program guidance counselor. Please continue to do your part and commit to do June 19th —July 26th a little more each week! 2015-2016 Upward Bound Calendar January 17th February 17th – 19th TRiO Day in Vermont March 12th Green Mountain Scholars Bowl at Johnson State College April 4th 30th 5:30 – 8:00 UB Meeting and College Fair TRIO is Working Community Service Day May 1st 1st 7th 29th 1:00 - 6:00 Junior SAT Review ASAC 216 1:00 – 3:00 Mother’s Day Give Away and Meeting Theater Juniors Take SAT I 1:00 – 3:00 Final Upward Bound Meeting Theater June 4th 1:00 – 4:00 FAFSA Workshop for Seniors LAC 411 (Eligible Juniors) ASAC 100 and Gym Juniors Take SAT II (if appropriate) 2016 Summer Program Dates June 19th — July 26th Upward Bound Wants You! It’s Recruiting Time Again… We will be in your schools in January and February, talking to any students who are interested in Upward Bound. At each school, we have presentations planned and we may ask you for your input or have you talk to your friends about Upward Bound at Lyndon State College. As we have been telling you in the past few months, we will be looking for about 30 new students this year to replace our senior class and to meet the mandate from the US Department of Education to increase our student number. This most likely will mean that we expect to have 8—10 non-residential students again this year! If your classmates are interested in Upward Bound, please tell them to get an application from your school’s guidance office and turn it in as soon as they can. We will not have a February meeting this year but the April meeting will be an open meeting for all students who are interested in joining our program.—please bring your college bound friends! Please keep in mind the goals for Upward Bound: our students have to be the first in their family to attend a four year college and/or from modest income families. If you know anyone who is interested, have them call us here at the UB office. We are looking forward to all of the smiling new faces as we prepare for this upcoming summer. Additionally, we are always happy to send applications directly to students at their homes. If a student or parent calls us, we usually put an application in the mail that day! As you all know, the Upward Bound application is on our website at http:// lyndonstate.edu/ academics/upwardbound/ Abbie Russo - New Assistant Director of Upward Bound We are thrilled to announce that Abbie Russo has accepted the position of Assistant Director of Upward Bound at Lyndon State College! As you all remember, Abbie was with us this summer as a tutor counselor and was amazed by what Upward Bound offers students. Although not an alum of the program, she has a very similar background to all of us and has also worked very hard to meet her educational goals. Abbie brings a wealth of knowledge and a background of tutoring and working with first generation and moderate income students as well as a strong first hand knowledge of the financial aid process. For the last four years she has been working in our sister TRIO program, SSS, helping college students meet their educational goals. Additionally, she has been a peer leader at Lyndon State and helped first generation college students make the transition to residential living in a collegiate educational environment. The Upward Bound program is lucky to have found a firm believer in the TRIO programs and someone who knows our Upward Bound so well. This summer she will help teach our cohort classes, take over the summer work program and the Summer Food Program. Abbie will officially begin her duties on January 11th and you will see her at the schools and on several college tours in the next few months and beyond. Please welcome Abbie when you see her in her new role! Our February Meeting We will change our February recruiting meeting to sometime later in he Spring and we may actually revamp it! At this point we have not had enough presentations in our high schools to get the attendance that we need for this meeting. I also want to make sure that Abbie Russo gets to be as involved as much as possible with bringing in our new class. At this meeting we also will have several of our current students speak to the parents and students about their involvement in Upward Bound! And thanks to the families who helped Rick pack his truck back up! Our families—as well as our students– are truly amazing! Our December Meeting! I am always thrilled to have our Holiday Meeting and Give Away and was really happy with all of the Lyndon State College Upward Bound students who attended. It was even more special to hear Rose talk about her involvement in our program and say her goodbyes! However, I was truly disappointed in the number of students who did not attend—which was expected—and the students who did not even respond. A few things: First of all, when we brought you into Upward Bound you agreed to be an important part of our program including attending all scheduled meetings. We give all students and families plenty of notice for our meetings and offer students a great deal. And work is not an excuse! But one of our expectations is that you will be involved. Students who do not show up often are emailing me in the next few days asking questions that I have already covered at these meetings. Additionally, it is just bad form not to at least let us know that you will not be in attendance. At all of our meetings and in particular the Holiday Give Away takes a huge effort to get together. This meeting had 10 people helping to bring things over, set up and organize things for you! And most of these people were alums—people whom you should meet and see! Please make every effort to attend our meetings and if there is an issue—call! Enough said! Burklyn Arts Holiday Market 2015 Once again this year we were proud to have 16 Upward Bound students from 4 different high schools come together to volunteer at the Burklyn Arts Holiday Market. This event is one of our favorites, and we’ve been doing it for the last 20 years! Our students had the chance to help support the Burklyn Arts Council in raising money for Arts Education in our local schools. At the event volunteers worked hard to help crafters and artisans move in and set up their booths the night before the event, helped deliver meals throughout the day, acted as greeters welcoming people to the market, and even helped crafters move back out at the end of the event. We know that your participation is really appreciated by the folks at Burklyn Arts, and once again this year we had many crafters and other people express what a great job you all did—how polite, hard working, and friendly you all were. And this year, Alyssa Leonard received a big enough tip to treat everyone on Sunday Night to Pizza! Way to go Upward Bound Volunteers! We are very proud of our volunteers! And because TRIO Day is in Vermont this year—our Vermont Upward Bound programs will be hosting the event. We will be bringing a small group of juniors and maybe sophomores to this event and it is an excellent opportunity for you to visit colleges in New York and Vermont and socialize with 700 of the best and brightest juniors from all over New England. We will be staying at the Burlington Sheraton and our students will visit colleges, hear inspiring speaker Richard Haynes, participate in college workshops, compete in a Scholar’s Bowl, and make new friends at the huge end of event dance. This is one of those events that we love to be a part of, not only because of the leadership experience it will give you and being able to put it on your resume for college applications, but it will also broaden your perspective of the world around you. The NEK is our home and a great place to go to school, but taking a step outside of your comfort zone could open your eyes to new possibilities you hadn’t thought of previously. We will mail you and your families more details about this event in February! We will travel on Wednesday Feb 17th after school and return on Friday, February 19th around 10:00AM! This promises to be a great trip! Students that have confirmed are: Logan DeShone and Abby Young and we may have a few spaces for sophomor es….let us know if you ar e inter ested! Green Mountain Scholars Bowl March 12th at Johnson State College Just about 12 years ago, Tony Blueter and Rick were sitting around thinking about how great our students were and wishing that there was a Scholars Bowl competition for Upward Bound students. At that point we realized that the best way to highlight our students was to begin the Green Mountain Scholars Bowl! On March 12th the Lyndon State College Upward Bound program will be competing in the 12 th Annual Green Mountain Scholars Bowl. Not only will we be defending last year’s victory for LSC UB but our students will also have the chance to tour Johnson State College and meet the New President. We will be competing against other Upward Bound programs with scholarship money up for grabs as a prize! This will be a full day event with food and the Scholars Bowl competition (trivia style). Not only could our program earn some valuable scholarship dollars, but you could also brag to colleges about your first place finish in the Annual Green Mountain Scholars Bowl. We intend to bring at least 5-8 of our best juniors (and maybe a few sophomores or seniors) to this year’s competition. Think about being a part of the LSC UB Winning Team. Let us know if you are interested in this academic opportunity! 2015 Scholars Bowl Champions: Daniel Cliche, Thomas Mailloux, Mallorie Biron, Matt Allen, Becky Doucet, Maranda Ruggles, Logan DeShone, Christina Cassidy, Emily Klar, Alyssa Leonard, Juniors UB Discover Scholarship Essays Due at the UB Office by January 10th One last reminder, we do expect every one of our juniors to do the Discover Scholarship Essays this year. As you know, this scholarship has been discontinued, but we still think it is incredibly valuable for juniors to write essays on the topics we have outlined. You will be able to use these essays as a starting point when you enter your senior year summer at Upward Bound and begin to write your college admission essay. We would like you to write four short essays, which should be 500 words or less each. Remember, the word limit is there as a guide to help you write carefully and concisely. These do not need to be novels: just write from the heart and don’t forget to proofread for grammar or spelling errors. Take this opportunity to reflect on your experiences and how they are preparing you for college. Please email us these essays so that we can keep an electronic copy for you for the summer. Alyssa Leonard has finish hers already! Here again are your topics: *Leadership: Explore the ways you are a leader or are becoming a leader in your school and community. *Community Service: Write about a service activity that you have participated in and what it means to you. *Obstacles Overcome: Wr ite about something that has challenged you, and how you overcame it. *Special Talent: you have to deter mine what you are good at and passionate about… and then br ag a little. Junior Essay and Matrix—Your Reapplication to Upward Bound Due at the UB Office by January 17th When you joined Upward Bound we listened closely to what you told us you wanted to do. And as we get to know your strengths and weaknesses a little more, we have a better idea of what colleges and careers will be a good fit! In this essay we want you to tell us what you are thinking about in terms of college! Your assignment is to write a short essay (no more than 2 pages) outlining your educational plans. We want you to explore majors you are thinking about, what colleges have those majors and the type of college you hope to attend. Think about size, cost, location and most importantly, where you would fit in and tell us how Upward Bound can help you achieve your educational goals moving forward. We strongly recommend that you have a few safety schools (colleges you will be admitted to and can afford), a few that you are likely to get into and maybe a dream school or two. Make sure that you also submit your college matrix with it…this will be the foundation for your essay. Spend some time with this and really think about what your educational goals are! We will also look at this assignment to determine your commitment to Upward Bound and going to college, so do your very best work. We want you to be prepared for your senior year and beyond! Web Sites for Juniors! As you prepare for your junior essay, here are some websites that could be very helpful. The first website is the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupation Outlook Handbook. It is a great site that allows you to look at hundreds of listings for all different types of jobs, the training you would need, and earning potential and working conditions. It will give you more information about different careers in the same field and you will be able to find jobs that you never knew existed! Try it out at http://www.bls.gov/oco/ This college search engine will allow you to look at and define colleges by state, size, majors, as well as GPA. It will give you a list of web addresses for each college that matches your criteria. There are others out there (College Board has a good one too), but this one has been used by our students for a while. Give it a try at http://cnsearch.collegenet.com/cgi-bin/CN/index And, please remember the website we used this summer in our Junior College Quest class. The ACT Student Website has College and Career Planning modules as well as an excellent one on Financial aid! These are great resources for your Upward Bound assignments! You will remember it when you go to… www.actstudent.org Seniors ~ All About Scholarships—Read These Pages Carefully We will be sitting down with all of our seniors to review the 2016 VSAC scholarship book. This guide is available in your guidance office at school and we have given copies to all of you. We have identified scholarships that students most likely are eligible for, but it is your responsibility to look through the book and do the same. In addition, now is the time to start asking around your guidance office for local scholarships. Every scholarship you receive means that much less loan debt! I guarantee that you will receive more money from local scholarships in your town, school, community organizations and VSAC than any internet source! Remember, although Fastweb and web based scholarship searches are fine the closer the scholarship is to your home, the better your chances of winning that money! Obviously, Upwar d Bound is the fir st place to start (see this newsletter!), but also ask your guidance counselor about local awards. And remember, as you are accepted by colleges, you can review their list of merit scholarships on their financial aid websites or on Meritaid.com. Vermont Student Scholarships We are very lucky in Vermont to have the VSAC Scholarship book, which offers a collection of scholarships that you may be eligible for. There have been some changes in recent years however, and we want to make you aware of them. As a part of applying for any of the scholarships in the book you will have to first complete the Unified Scholarship Application in addition to the FAFSA. You must complete the VSAC Unified Scholarship Application online this year and we will help you. You can find it on the VSAC website at www.vsac.org/scholarships. After completing the Unified Scholarship Application, and filing your FAFSA with us on January 17th here are a list of the other documents that you will likely need to submit. Recommendation Letters Most scholar ships r equir e one or two of these documents. Remember to use our s! Essays All scholar ships r equir e a Gener al Essay this year in 3 par ts: A Focus on Commitment / Goals, Community Service and Uniqueness. I hope these sound familiar to you! SAT Scores This needs to be a copy of the official scor e repor t. Any Other Required Documents Check to see if your scholar ships r equir e any of these—resume, portfolio, etc. VSAC wants these items submitted through their website and you and your school will have to upload the required documents. But this may take more time this year and you will have to work very closely with your school! Submitting everything electronically will ensure your application is processed quicker and more accurately. We suggest making time to touch base with your guidance counselor about this process asap. Create a MyVSAC account and enter the scholarship section of the website, there you will see the Unified Scholarship Application, and be able to click a button that says upload required documents. Label these carefully and follow the directions. VSAC will also ask you family information, and a few other details. As always, please contact us with questions as you move through this process. You can also find more detailed instructions in your VSAC Scholarship book. And one more reminder… Do not forget all the other scholarships that we have been telling you about, including the Dell Scholarship which is due January 15th! Stay organized in this process...and do not miss deadlines. Each year we are shocked when some Upward Bound students do not do the guaranteed Upward Bound scholarship! Remember we want all of your VSAC Scholarships sent out before February 5th, the early bird deadline which puts you in the running for another $1000 scholarship, and we want every Upward Bound student to call VSAC to confirm that they have everything they need from you. Each year some unfortunate student finds out after the deadline that they somehow missed part of the application. We are here to help you along the way, but it is your responsibility to complete these applications, and triple check that you have done it correctly! I promise it will all be worth it when those scholarship checks start being sent out—hopefully to your house! The Fortier Scholarship Essay: Due February 22nd Bryan and Justin are looking forward to reading all 23 Lyndon State College Upward Bound scholarship applications! All LSC UB seniors will have a great chance to get $500.00 of the Fortier's money. You must have at least a 2.89 GPA in college prep classes and have to address each topic below in an essay (limit yourself to a total of 1-2 pages, your answers should be thoughtful and concise). A word to the wise—in the past, essays were so weak that there was only 1 Fortier Scholarship given out. Do not take this extraordinary opportunity for granted. Write well and write from the heart. Remember that both Bryan and Justin know the ropes as former LSC Upward Bound students, and were right where you are now 12 years ago… 1. Explain the impact community service has had on you and how it has benefited those you have helped. 2. What next? Now that you are graduating and headed for college, what community service do you plan on involving yourself with in the future? The 2016 Phillips Memorial Scholarship Essay This is a heads up, months in advance before the Phillips Memorial Scholarship Application is due! We want this scholarship in our office by Mid-April. This year you will have to fill out the application online and then we will do our part! The application will be out in early January; it is never too early to start preparing your masterpiece! Please go online and look over the Phillips Website at http://phillips-scholarship.org/ We will talk to you more about this scholarship as we complete our Financial Aid applications at the January 17th meeting. At that point we will have copies of the Scholarship Application and have it ready for you! “The Stephen Phillips Memorial Scholarship Fund offers renewable, 4-year scholarships to students with financial need who display academic achievement, a commitment to serving others (in school, in the community or at home), a strong work ethic, and leadership qualities.” This sounds like just about every one of our Upward Bound seniors this year!
