real PE – baseline assessment tool accelerating learning by developing the whole child The ‘real PE’ Baseline Assessment Tool has been created as a simple tool to enable schools to provide a baseline of children’s Fundamental Movement Skills and then to evidence progress in these areas at different points in time. It is based on a broad spread of agility, balance and coordination areas from the FUNS for everyone programme, with 5 rather than 12 Stations selected to make baselining more manageable. In addition, rather than the full journey of challenges from the FUNS programme for each of these Stations, key milestone challenges have been selected, with the aim of identifying the challenges each child can do, but also the challenge they can’t do... yet! Through effective implementation of the ‘real PE’ programme, teachers and schools will be able to see and evidence clear progress in these 5 areas over time. www.createdevelopment.co.uk STATIC BALANCE - 1 LEG STANDING (FUNS STATION 1) Can balance on 1 leg for 10 seconds (either leg). Identify an opportunity at the start of the year to baseline all children against the 5 Stations. Clarify with the children what ‘Success’ looks like for each challenge, e.g. using the FUNS for everyone video clips; sharing Success Criteria (see table below). Children get a maximum of 2 goes at each challenge. Depending on staffing, children can either work in small groups and rotate around different Stations, or do each Station as a whole class. Use the supporting table to record what each child achieved at each Station, e.g. with a tick, and also what challenge they couldn’t do, e.g. by adding a T for ‘Target’ Re-visit the assessment as desired, e.g. halfway through the year and again at the end of the year.
