THE SWIRLING HIJAAB What is the story about? A little girl imagines all the different ways she can play with her mother’s hijaab. Her imagination takes her to different colourful places and she sees many interesting things. Play a game/other ideas Take a piece of cloth and enact this story using this cloth as a hijaab. Choose one of the things the girl imagines the hijaab to become, act it out and ask someone to guess who you are. Read the story Discuss the title of the story – what do the words ‘swirling’ and ‘hijaab’ mean? What is a fort? Who do you think is in the picture? Have you ever tried to make a tent like that? Discuss who Bedouins are and what a desert is? Where can you find deserts in the world? Describe the lady getting married, her clothes and her jewellery. What foods are there for the tea party? What is your favourite party food? What do the words ‘warrior’, ‘cloak’ and ‘nomad’ mean? Which animal can you see carrying people? Look at the last picture, discuss how you pray or have a special thinking time. Language: ENGLISH Talk together Discuss the different reasons why people might cover their head, for example for religion, to keep warm, to protect their head, for hygiene purposes when cooking.
