Jiang Zemin visited RUC and delivered
a very important speech
When China’s former President Jiang Zemin visited our university on April 28, 2002, he delivered a very important speech and
encouraged us to build our university into one of the world’s leading universities specializing in the fields of humanities and
social sciences. Greatly encouraged by these remarks, RUC’s faculty and staff are determined to fulfill that objective as soon
as possible.
Hu Jintao visited RUC and conveyed the Teacher’s Day
Greetings to the Faculty
On the occasion of the 26th Teacher’s Day, General Secretary of the CPC, President of the PRC, and the Chairman of the
Central Military Commission, Hu Jintao visited RUC and conveyed the holiday greetings to the Chinese educators on behalf of
the Chinese Central Party and the State Council. During his visit, President Hu said that as the first new pattern university
created by the Communist Party of China, RUC has cultivated a lot of talents and accomplished many significant research
achievements in the past 60 years, which has made great contribution to the country’s development. He also hoped the
university administration and teaching staff to embrace reform and innovation and further improve its education quality, to build
RUC into “a World-Renowned University that is Approved by and Satisfies the People .”
Premier Wen Jiabao visited RUC on the Youth Day
Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao visited Renmin University of China on the Youth Day, May 4, 2007. Premier Wen said that RUC
has a glorious history of 70 years since the founding of Shanbei Public School, and RUC has sent a large number of leading
cadres for the country. Then he expressed three expectations for the teachers and students of RUC. First, RUC should insist on
the good style of study of integrating theory with practice. Secondly, RUC people should keep innovating and seeking truth.
Thirdly, young people should develop a sense of responsibility for the country and the people. Premier Wen said that students
should study hard at school and walk into the society, then learn from the practice and learn from the people.
The predecessor of the University was Shanbei Public School established in 1937 during the
Anti-Japanese War. Later it was renamed the North China United University and North China University.
Renmin University of China was officially established in 1950. Eminent educationalists Prof. Wu Yuzhang,
Prof. Cheng Fangwu, Prof. Yuan Baohua, Prof. Huang Da, Prof. Li Wenhai and Prof. Ji Baocheng have
successively held the presidential posts. The current President is Prof. Chen Yulu, a renowned finance
expert. During the past half century, four Chinese leaders, Mao Zedong, Deng Xiaoping, Jiang Zemin and
Hu Jintao have shown much attention and have attached great importance to RUC’s development. They
each delivered speeches on our campus or offered inscriptions for the University.
Renmin University of China is well placed to take a leading role in the growth and changes occurring in our
society. We have great strengths in the excellence of our faculty and their research achievements, in the
quality of our students, and in the dedication of our staff. We invite you to join us in meeting the challenges

Renmin University of China attaches great importance to international exchanges and cooperation. The
University maintains academic links with more than 202 institutions and universities from more than 40
countries and regions, and recruits international students from all over the world. Each year, renowned
international scholars are awarded honorary doctorates or honorary professorships and are invited to give
lectures on campus. RUC runs cooperative education programs, hosts international conferences,
introduces foreign textbooks and sponsors international training projects. The University is also home to
many international academic organizations.

International Links
RUC has established academic exchange relationships with about 216 universities from 56
countries and regions in the world. RUC has hosted or organized a series of high-level
international conferences on campus and has conducted a lot of international research
programs.
More than 200 world-renowned scholars and celebrities have been granted the titles of
honorary doctor, honorary professor, or guest professor. In 2011, RUC has 1,757
international students from 93 countries, pursuing their degree and Chinese language
studies.
From 2009 on, RUC initiated its remarkable international programs like the International
Summer School and Master Programs in English, etc.
RUC houses many international centers, such as the UN China Population Training Center,
the Sino-American Economics Education Training Center, the Intellectual Property Rights
Center, the VISA Research and Training Center, Center for European Studies, Center for
Asian Studies, and UNESCO RUC Center.
Research
Renmin University of China is an important base for Chinese social sciences and humanities research.
Since 1978, RUC has conducted about 49,000 research projects. In the last ten years, the total number of
approved projects sponsored by the National Fund for Philosophy and Social Sciences has been No. 1
among all Chinese universities. The total number of research projects sponsored by the Ministry of
Education also ranks No. 1 among Chinese universities.
At present, RUC has 13 Key Research Institutes of Humanities and Social Sciences, ranking the first in
terms of number. In addition, there are eight State-Level First-Class Key Subjects, eight State-Level
Second-Class Key Subjects, three Beijing Municipal-Level First-Class Key Subjects, six Beijing
Municipal-Level Second-Class Key Subjects and one Beijing Municipal-Level Key Interdisciplinary Subject.
RUC is known as one of the national information centers for
humanities and social sciences. The
University’s library, one of the top ten in China, has a collection of 3 million volumes.

Students
RUC boasts of high quality students. Over the past two decades, freshmen’s National College Entrance Examination grades have
maintained to be top three in China.
Till now, RUC has about 220,000 alumni, thousands of whom have become well-known scholars, and more than 400 have taken
posts as ministerial level officials.
In 2011, the total student enrollment is 37,891, among them 24,565 are full-time students and 13,326 are part-time students. The
ratio of full-time graduates to undergraduates is 1:1, one of the highest ratios in the country.

Students
In the year 2011, the number of overseas students in our university has maintained a steady growth. By the end of 2011, it has
reached 1,757, among which there are 1,168 undergraduate students, 323 postgraduate students, 180 language students and
other kinds of students. The total amount of the overseas students receiving degree education accounts for 85% of all the overseas
students, one of the highest ratios among all universities in Beijing. This university has attached great importance to the scale of
overseas students as well as the quality of enrollment.
There are 281 degree overseas students that have graduated in 2011, including 229 undergraduate students and 52 postgraduate
students from countries like Korea, Japan, Malaysia, Vietnam, Laos, Mongolia, Tajikistan, United States, United Arab Emirates,
Syria, Sri Lanka, Central Africa, Congo, Brazil, Dominica, Guinea and Republic de Guine-Bissau.
Scholars
In 2011, the University invited five overseas visiting professors and awarded one honorary professor. The University also invited
50 teachers who taught more than half of the year. Also 215 scholars were invited to the University for short-term teaching,
academic study, visiting, and international conferences.
Confucius Institute
Confucius Institute is a joint non-profit educational agency between China and countries worldwide. It
is dedicated to meet the increasing demand for people around the world in Chinese language study.
It is also aiming to advance the educational and cultural exchanges between China and other
countries, strengthening China’s friendship with other countries and promoting the development of
diverse cultures in the world.
