Marine Archaeology as a discipline has provided a means to better understand the
relationship between humans and the sea over time.

Mediterranean history, as an historical
phenomenon and an academic discipline, exists because of the ships and sailors which
crisscrossed the Mediterranean Sea, connecting populations and cultures from Spain to
Syria and creating the social, political and economic networks that made the
Mediterranean basin a geographical (and at times political and cultural) unity. We will
begin with an overview of the discipline of marine archaeology as a distinct entity, and
address the different types of underwater sites and methods of investigating them. This
will be followed with a broad review of ancient seafaring. We will then turn to a series of
case-studies to explore key international discoveries in marine archaeology and how they
have impact our understanding of history. Finally, the ethics and debates between treasure
hunters, archaeologists, and maritime law will be discussed along with learning the key
indicators for separating ‘pseudo science’ from scientific investigations.
