Trip Itinerary Blessed Junipero Serra Biography Missionary (c. 1713–c. 1784) Pope John Paul II beatified Father Serra, the second of three steps necessary to achieve sainthood. Pope Francis has announced that he will be canonized in Washington, DC in September. Spanish missionary Juniper Serra established his first U.S. mission in 1769. He built eight more California missions over the next thirteen years. There were 21 missions established in California along “ The Kings Road” which stretches from San Diego to Sonoma in the North. We will be traveling to 4 of these missions. After working as a missionary in Sierra Gorda and Mexico City, Serra was sent to California. Serra established his first mission, San Diego de Alcalá, in 1769. He built eight more missions over the next thirteen years. He is credited with helping the Spanish establish a presence in California. He died in 1784 at Mission San Carlos Borroméo de Carmelo, in Carmel, California. Profile Spanish missionary. Born in 1713 on the island of Majorca off the coast of Spain. He took the name Junípero when he joined the Franciscan order in 1730. He taught for more than a decade before going to Mexico in 1749. After working as a missionary in Sierra Gorda and Mexico City, Serra was sent to California. He made the trip by foot despite having terrible sores on his legs. Once he reached California, Serra established his first mission, San Diego de Alcalá, in 1769. He built eight more missions over the next thirteen years: San Antonio de Padua; San Gabriel, Arcángel; San Luis, Obispo de Tolosa; San Juan Capistrano; San Francisco de Asis; and San Buenaventura. Serra worked tirelessly tirelessly to maintain the missions and is credited with helping the Spanish establish a presence in California. Serra died in 1784 at Mission San Carlos Borroméo de Carmelo located in present-day Carmel, California. The site is now home to the National Shrine to Blessed Junípero Serra, and many visitors go there each year to honor the famous missionary. The church is known for its campanario and archway bells. The Valley comes alive with wildflowers each spring when, poppies, lupines and the Golden Blazing Star begin to bloom. In the Early evening the New Baroque Orchestra directed by musicologist John Warner will perform a concert, just for us, of the missions, presidios and outposts of Spanish California. Sunday, April 26, 2015 We will continue our pilgrimage by visiting San Carlos Barromeo de Carmelo Mission for mass. This is the church where Fr. Serra and Father Lasuen are buried. It was said to be Fr. Serra’s favorite mission and was his headquarters. This beautiful mission presents the complete quadrangle courtyard typical of mission architecture. Nearby we will visit the Royal Presidio Chapel Heritage Center and the Cathedral. A docent led tour of the Chapel and the grounds Here we will see a display of a relic of the Vizcaino- Serra Oak and items found during an archaeological dig. Travel on to San Juan Bautista mission above the San Andreas Fault line. It’s the largest California mission Church, Musical arts were taught here and the mission owned many instruments that the Indians learned to play. After a leisurely dinner we travel back to New York, via a redeye flight that departs at 10:51 and lands in New York at 7:14 AM Monday April 27! Its back to work! Fr. Martinez was ordained a Paulist priest in 1995. He has served as Pastor at Saint Sebastian in Los Angeles, California and Saint Cyril of Alexandria in Tucson, Arizona. Father Gil is a native of El Paso, Texas and grew up in California. He completed a Bachelor of Science degree in Conservation of Natural Resources from the University of California at Berkeley. He worked for seven years as a National Park Service Ranger at Grand Canyon and Big Bend National Parks before Joining the Paulists whom he met at the Newman Center while a student at Berkeley. Dr Ruben Mendoza - Our Historical Guide Rubén Mendoza, PhD, at the Royal Presidio of San Carlos in Monterey California, where in 2007 -2008 he led the research team that discovered the original Serra Chapels of 1770 and 1772. Dr. Rubén Mendoza is Director of the Institute for Archaeological Science, Technology, and Visualization at California State University, Monterey Bay. He is an influential scholar, a much-loved professor, and a tireless explorer of past eras whose work has earned him numerous awards, honors, and major grants. Dr. Mendoza’s expertise ranges far in time and space, with notable research conducted in California, the Southwest, and throughout Mesoamerica.
