media release excellence in care June 12, 2013 Warning after 204 babies, toddlers treated for scalds With winter upon us, NSW Ambulance is warning people about the dangers of drinking hot beverages such as tea and coffee near children after it was found 204 babies and toddlers had been treated for scalds in eight months. Paramedics attended 535 responses across NSW for burns caused mostly by hot beverages, together with food and cooking oil*, between September 1, 2012, and April 30, 2013. (NB These figures do not include people burned in fire-related incidents.) Alarmingly, children whose skin was most vulnerable to such burns featured highest (30 per cent). Hot beverages accounted for most scalds in children. In the Sydney metropolitan region, paramedics treated 309 patients, with children aged two years and under accounting for 138 cases. Between September and March, responses averaged 36 a month, rising to 53 in April with the onset of the colder weather. Northern NSW recorded 121 responses (37 aged two years and under); southern NSW 70 responses (16 aged two years and under), and western NSW 35 responses (13 aged two years and under). Other NSW totals included: Oil 72 Food 39 (includes 13 hot noodles) Radiator fluid 21 Pressure cooker/steamer/hot pot 17 NSW Ambulance Inspector John Brotherhood said that, in many cases, the child had either had the hot water or beverage spilled on top of them, or they had pulled the fluids on to themselves. “Unfortunately, over the years, I have attended many of these cases, not only from tea and coffee but, where the child is old enough, grabbing the handles of saucepans and pulling the contents on to themselves, or pulling the cords of kettles full of hot water,” Insp Brotherhood said. “Other burns cases involved young children spilling two minute noodles and hot food on to themselves.” Insp Brotherhood said that attending young burns victims was particularly distressing. “The children are not only suffering and in terrible pain, their skin is basically degloving (peeling off) in front of you. “And the parents are that panicked and frightened. It’s hard; they believe they’ve done the wrong thing and they’re doing things like wrapping the child in warm blankets to comfort them, rather than taking appropriate care.” Insp Brotherhood said the best treatment for any burns victim was to place the burned section under cold running water for 20 minutes or, where the burns were more expansive, under a cold shower. Salt water swimming pools were also an option, where available. “The burns must be cooled down, that’s the biggest thing. Just be careful not to over-cool the patient, particularly if it’s a young child. “Also, never put fats or oils on the burn. We’re still finding a lot of our older residents applying oil and butter.” Save Triple Zero (000) for saving lives Ambulance Service of New South Wales Media Unit Email: [email protected] Web: www.ambulance.nsw.gov.au Tel: 02 9320 7796 Fax: 02 9320 7804 media release excellence in care Insp Brotherhood said that, where possible, jewellery such as earrings and rings should be removed from burn areas. “The metal holds the heat and when the skin starts to swell it restricts the circulation,” he said. People were also advised to be mindful of handling food straight from a microwave. “The food is still cooking and still emitting heat and steam when cooked in a sealed container – it’s just a potential BLEVE, a boiling liquid expanding vapour explosion,” Insp Brotherhood said. Insp Brotherhood said that, as winter approached, and the potential for consuming hot food and beverages increased, the safety message was timely. Paramedics advise the following to prevent liquid burns in children: • Check bath water before placing a child in the bath to ensure it is a safe temperature. • Keep hot liquids out of children’s reach • Do not leave saucepan handles hanging over the edge of a stove, or kettle cords within reach If a person is burned: • Dial 000 immediately and ask for Ambulance. • Cool the burn area with plenty of cool running water, for at least 20 minutes • DO NOT apply ointment, cream or butter to the affected area. • If possible remove rings and jewellery from burn areas • Take off loose clothing so it does not stick to the burn.
