MIDDLE SCHOOL POLICIES
ATHLETICS
Cherry Hills Christian School is proud to offer an abundance of seasonal, competitive middle school sports programs.
Cherry Hills Christian School honors a No Cut Policy, but the sports become progressively more competitive with each
grade level. Tryouts will be held to determine the appropriate team for the student’s skill level.
At CHCMS we feel it is a privilege to participate in athletics and extracurricular activities. This is a privilege that should be
appreciated and one that can be revoked temporarily or permanently if an athlete does not adhere to the code. When you
sign the Athletic Code Agreement, you are agreeing to uphold the code and will be held responsible for your actions.
Because of our beliefs and faith in Jesus Christ, and in striving to represent that faith, athletes at Cherry Hills Christian
may be held to more rigid standards than others.
General rules for athletic participation include:
§ Academic Eligibility: Each athlete’s grades are checked every week. On Fridays the grades are compiled and,
beginning the following Monday, any athlete having 2 D’s or 1 F in any course will be deemed ineligible for that full
week. During the time a student is ineligible, he/she may not wear the uniform at school, attend any practices or
participate in any games/contests. If an athlete is ineligible for more than three weeks in a given sports season, they
forfeit their eligibility for remainder of the season.
§ Attendance: In order to participate in a scheduled extra-curricular activity, athletic practice or game that day, a student
must be in attendance for a minimum of four full class periods. If it is determined that an athlete violates this minimum
standard of attendance, they will “sit the bench” for the next contest.
§ Conduct required of a CHCMS Athlete: All athletes are expected to exemplify Christ-like behavior and good
sportsmanship at all times. Violations will include: Failure to comply with School Behavior policies, disrespect to
teachers, coaches, or administrators; detentions (Note: any detention will supersede an athletic game or practice on
the day that detention is to be served); two or more unexcused missed practices; damage done to school uniform,
equipment, or property.
§ Prompt Payment of All Fees: Athletic fees for each sports season must be paid in full before the first practice,
uniforms must be turned in at the close of the season.
§ Individual head coaches at Cherry Hills Christian Middle School may implement their own, (and possibly more
stringent) team rules, with the approval of the Athletic Director.
ATTENDANCE
The State of Colorado has only one area of compliance regarding private schools and that is attendance. The state
allows for 15 days total, excused and unexcused absences, before the question of continuation from one grade to the next
can come into play. Unless a student’s condition warrants a doctor’s approval for extended stays at home or to leave
school, that law is strictly enforced. Also, we have a number of students who participate in competitive sports and miss
multiple days, multiple times over the school year. The law still pertains to these students. Families should choose wisely
when scheduling absences with CHCMS. We can submit a notice to the state regarding illnesses if audited, but any other
total over the 15 days is difficult to defend. The state sees the 15 days, or the equivalent of 3 full weeks of school, as truly
a reasonable limit. CHCMS agrees.
Absences
Absences cause a great deal of additional work for both students and teachers, whether legitimate or questionable. We
strongly recommend that families plan any trips within the scheduled days off on the school calendar, avoid appointments
Academic success is consistent with regular attendance.
§ Students will be allowed 15 absences (excused or unexcused) over the course of the school year. Habitual absences
will jeopardize a student’s continued enrollment at CHC. Exceptions to this are considered in cases of extended
illness requiring hospitalization or extended home care.
§ If a student must exceed 15 absences, school administration will require:
Ø The student maintains a GPA of 2.75 (77-78%) average or higher each quarter.
Cherry Hills Christian Middle School | Parent-Student Handbook | Page 7
Ø Sufficient reasoning that many days of school are in the best interest of the student.
Ø Prior approval of the Principal.
§ Excused absences that count toward the 15-day total include: illness, doctor/dentist/orthodontist appointments, out of
town family vacations or non-CHCMS sports trips.
§ Absences that WILL NOT count toward the 15-day total include: extended medical condition accompanied by
physician notification, bereavement, or pre-approved mission trips.
§ Parents should report their child’s absence by emailing [email protected] or calling the Middle School
Absence Hotline at ext. 8394 each day they will be absent.
§ Unexcused absences include: Any absence not reported. Unexcused absences keep students from receiving full
credit on make up assignments.
§ Parents are urged to schedule vacation days in conjunction with days off already built into the CHCMS schedule.
§ Parents are asked to try and schedule doctor/dental appointments during non-school hours if possible, or schedule
repeating appointments so that students do not consistently miss the same class.
§ If a student misses a portion of a school day, they may not participate in a scheduled extra-curricular activity, athletic
practice or game that day.
Assignment Due Dates For Pre-Planned Absences
§ Students with a pre-planned absence should inform the school no later than 72 hours in advance. Students must
make arrangements with teachers regarding all assignments due during or just after their absence.
§ All assigned work will be due before a student leaves for any pre-planned, scheduled absence. This includes, daily
work, homework, projects, papers, presentations, or tests/quizzes.
§ Assignments turned in one day after returning will receive 50% credit and 0%-50% credit for each day after that as
determined by the instructor upon completion of a student/instructor conference. All students will have the opportunity
to turn in late assignments at quarters end and receive up to 10% of the value of the assignment.
Unaccounted Absences
Any absence not reported by phone or email will automatically be considered unexcused and grade(s) for the missed
day(s) will reflect a zero. The office notifies parents when students are unaccounted for. If a student is deemed truant, by
law, parents and the local police are contacted immediately. This infraction may result in serious consequences at the
discretion of the principal.
Tardies
Tardies cause disruption of classes and cost valuable teaching time. The following policies will be strictly enforced this
year:
1. Three unexcused tardies total (whether to class or to school) will result in an after-school detention
2. An additional detention will be served once a student has receives a sixth Tardy
3. 1 Day Out-of-School Suspension upon receiving the ninth total tardy
4. Parents have 24 hours to excuse a tardy. After that time, tardies will remain unexcused
5. Tardy count will reset at semester
It is our hope that with careful parental monitoring, a student will never get to the suspension.
AWARDS
Lion Heart Award
§ One male and female student from each grade level who best exemplify Christ-likeness by their integrity and spirit of
cooperation, encouragement toward others, academic success and participation in school will receive this award at
the end of each school year.
§ The student body and staff will have the opportunity to nominate students monthly and vote on the recipients.
Aslan Award
§ Awarded to a male and female eighth grade student who, by their exemplary spirit, outstanding sportsmanship and
sound team play, have contributed most to CHC’s athletic program. Awarded at the end of the school year.
§ Recipients are nominated and selected by the Middle School coaches.
Honor Roll Awards
§ Given at the end of each quarter, these awards are based on Grade Point Average (GPA) equivalents established to
represent varying levels of high overall academic achievement.
BIRTHDAYS
Student birthdays will be recognized with a postcard placed on the student locker by the receptionists. In consideration
of all students, there may be no other decorations placed inside or outside of the locker for birthdays. Please do not
bring any birthday items into school during lunch or classroom time (i.e. balloons, food, drink, invitations, or party items).
Personal invitations must be mailed to individual students.
Page 8 | Parent-Student Handbook | Cherry Hills Christian Middle School
BUILDING ACCESS-STUDENTS
All CHC students shall respect the facility and property of CHC and follow all rules and instructions before, during and
after school.
Before School
§ Students are allowed into the lobby and hallways at 7:50 a.m. (8:20 a.m. on Late Start days). Thus, liability rests
solely with parents if students are dropped off prior to these times.
§ Middle School students may go to Wild Blue before school if dropped off or accompanied there. However, students
are not allowed in the PreSchool hallway before 7:50 a.m. (8:20 a.m. on Late Start days). Access to this hallway is
only for students traveling to the Ministry Center lobby from Wild Blue after 7:45 a.m.
§ Students patronizing Wild Blue must remain there until 7:45 a.m. (8:20 a.m. on Late Start days). Students may then
walk down the PreSchool hallway to the Ministry Center lobby and remain there until allowed to enter their respective
school’s hallway. CHCS is not liable for students while in Wild Blue, nor if they leave the building or are in the
hallways before 7:50 a.m.
After School
§ All students are to go directly to carpool or the gym (if applicable) after school dismisses at 3:20 p.m. No student
using carpool should be found anywhere in the building during carpool time unless one is a sports participant heading
to practice or a game, or to an appointment with a teacher.
§ Students attending after school events are allowed to go to Wild Blue or to the gym at 3:30 p.m.
§ All students, including students who participate in sports, should take books and other materials with them each day
from their classroom or their lockers prior to 3:45 p.m. We ask that no students be in the hallways after 3:45 p.m.
unless given permission by a teacher or coach.
§ We understand at times students may forget something in their locker or due to illness may need to access their
locker for materials. We ask that a parent accompany a student after 5 p.m. and access to classrooms is not
permitted.
§ Once a student arrives in the gym, they must remain in the gym until a parent picks them up. Students are not
permitted to leave campus or be in the hallways outside of the gym area because CHC provides no supervision.
Thus, liability rests solely with parents if students are outside the gym area or off campus after 3:45 p.m.
§ Students not attending sporting events, other afterschool activities and not picked up in carpool must remain in the
designated Ministry Center lobby location until parent picks them up.
§ Siblings of CHCS students must abide by the aforementioned policies.
§ If a student regularly walks home, rides a bike home, or walks to Valor, the office should be informed in writing and
the notice filed in the respective school office. Otherwise, all students should proceed to carpool.
*Student behavior dictates our continued privilege to be in Wild Blue or the hallway adjacent to Wild Blue before
and after school hours. Please be respectful of other customers, nearby office areas, and Wild Blue furnishings.
Exhibit polite and quiet behavior when visiting Wild Blue.
Students of Employees
All students of staff members are required to follow all of the above with the exception of a.m. and p.m. access to
hallways. Staff students may reside in their parent’s classroom or office before and after school until other students arrive
(a.m.), or their parents leave the building (p.m.). Staff students may join other students in the Ministry Center lobby at 7:45
a.m. CHC Staff Parents assume liability for their children in any unsupervised areas before or after school.
Consequences
If a student is found in violation of the policies stated above, the Principal will determine the consequence(s) and the
sequence based upon the circumstances and severity of the violation(s).
CARPOOL
Carpool Instructions
Each family will receive a detailed set of carpool procedures in the August emailer. Instructions are also available at the
reception desk or downloaded from the school’s website. Updated carpool numbers and colors are assigned to new
families as well as to existing families whose pick-up status has changed.
Carpool Guidelines
Traffic patterns at CHC are designed for maximum safety for our students. Please give wholehearted cooperation in
observing the following guidelines:
§ Park and pick up preschool students BEFORE getting into the pick up line.
§ Display your carpool number from your sun visor when picking up.
§ Have students enter and exit your car from the CURBSIDE ONLY.
§ Use grace and mercy with other drivers and pedestrians around your vehicle.
§ Please wait patiently behind other vehicles while students are loading or unloading.
§ Stay in designated perpendicular parking/driving lanes while navigating and parking in the parking lot.
§ Keep speeds under 10 m.p.h.
Cherry Hills Christian Middle School | Parent-Student Handbook | Page 9
§ Remember that RED CURB FIRE LINES are for emergency vehicles ONLY.
§ Stay with your car at all times while in the carpool line.
§ Please limit cell phone use to before and after dropping off and picking up.
Bike-Rider/Walkers
Students who wish to bike/walk to or from school must have parents complete and sign a release form available in the
office. Bikes should be locked to bike racks located outside the ministry center doors.
CHAPEL
Students and staff attend chapel “Blaze,” every Friday morning. Students and parents are encouraged to take part in
Chapel presentations.
CHERRY HILLS ACADEMIC SERVICES (CHAS)
CHC offer a variety of services to support our students’ learning needs. Comprehensive brochures about C.H.A.S.
programs are available on our website or in the school office.
COMMUNICATION MATERIALS
CHC works hard to keep all publications and printed items consistent in philosophy and style.
§ Every parent will receive the Mighty Roar newsletter posted biweekly on Canvas.
§ Students should look for teacher communication on Canvas and they also may receive extra printed communication
materials.
Parent-to-Parent Communication
§ All communication directed to other parents must be pre-approved by CHC administration with the understanding that
the information may be included in Roar newsletters rather than sent separately.
§ All materials must be pre-approved by emailing them to the school office no later than Wednesday noon of the week
that information is being sent home.
§ Materials for Roar newsletters must be submitted via email one week in advance and are subject to space availability.
CONCERNS
All staff, assistants, church/office staff, parents, guardians and students have a responsibility to provide direct, timely,
accurate and helpful information to concerned parties. It is also imperative that anyone needing clarification on any issue
within the school agrees to maintain a Christ-centered approach toward the issue and those involved. Following these
guidelines, all parties should reach an appropriate level of satisfaction. Quality communication is a key to the to success
of daily operations at CHC. Protocol is both expected and important to communication at our school.
General Protocol
§ In all matters of disagreement or concern, CHC maintains the biblical principles of Matthew 18:15-16: “If a brother or
sister sins, go and point out the fault, just between the two of you. If they listen to you, you have won them over. But if
they will not listen, take one or two others along, so that every matter may be established by the testimony of two or
three witnesses.”
§ CHC strongly encourages parents that the first communication contact be verbal when a concern arises. Please call a
teacher or administrator to conference in person or over the phone. Although fast and effective, email can be a difficult
tool for communicating thoughts and emotions. There is no substitute for voice or face-to-face contact by concerned
parties.
Academic/Classroom Concerns
§ Parents with concerns about their child’s progress or a classroom concern should first discuss the matter with their
child’s teacher.
Ø Parents should feel free to call or email teachers at school only to express a concern or set up an appointment.
Ø Middle School teachers will return phone calls or emails within 24 hours.
Ø Parents may share their concerns at one of the scheduled conferences during the school year (see Conferences)
or set a special meeting.
§ Parents needing further assistance should set an appointment with the Principal. If further clarification is needed,
please contact the Superintendent.
§ Students needing additional academic assistance may schedule an appointment with a teacher. If further clarification
is needed, the teacher and the student should include the parent in discussions.
Administrative/General Concerns
§ Parents should first bring school-wide administrative or general concerns to the Principal. CHC greatly discourages
gossip. This practice undermines the integrity of the parties involved and the school itself.
Page 10 | Parent-Student Handbook | Cherry Hills Christian Middle School
§
§
§
If the concern is not satisfactorily addressed, parents should call a member of the Principal’s Advisory Council (PAC).
Parents may also contact their Board of Education (BOE) representative (names and phone numbers listed in Roar
newsletters). Many times this outlet can provide all the help and answers necessary.
Parents wishing to voice an opinion or brainstorm ideas should attend the Principal’s Forum, held monthly. A protocol
for this meeting will be sent to all parents at the beginning of the school year and parents are expected to adhere to
protocol in the interest of time and with respect to depth of discussion.
If further clarification is needed, please contact the Principal or Superintendent.
CONDUCT - STUDENT
Our hope is that student attitudes and behavior would reflect obedience to the Lord Jesus. CHC asks each student to use
the teachings of Jesus to guide their actions.
§ Respect all adult instruction and classroom rules. (2 Timothy 3:16)
§ Respect fellow students and the CHC facility. (Romans 12:10) Be good stewards of everything God has given us. (I
Chronicles 29:11)
§ Use appropriate language and voice level. (Ephesians 4:29)
§ Fighting, bullying of any kind or intimidation will not be tolerated. (Proverbs 29:8)
Specific examples of the above rules include, but are not limited to:
§ Students are to use a formal address (Mr., Mrs., or Ms. and last name) toward all instructors and other adults. In
class, students are to raise their hands to be invited to speak.
§ Cheating will not be tolerated at CHS and the consequences for cheating will be dealt with on an individual basis by
the principals.
§ Enter each class on time and prepared with all materials and necessary supplies.
§ Respect restroom privileges and help keep the restrooms clean.
Student Relationships
§ Students will exhibit appropriate displays of affection on campus and at school sponsored events. Embraces between
male and female students are not permitted. Romantic involvement of any kind between students is strictly prohibited.
Prohibited Items
§ Students cannot bring to school any items that are dangerous, distracting or dishonoring to Christ, or in any other way
inappropriate at CHC. The following items are considered a distraction or deamed unsafe at CHS and are not
permitted on the campus:
Alcohol
Chewing gum
Drugs
Firecrackers
Game cards
Gasoline or Flammable liquids
Guns (toy or real)
Knives or sharp instruments
Laser pens
Lighted devices Lighters/Matches
**Pornography
Rollershoes
Skateboards
Sporting Equipment from homeSpiked jewelry
Tobacco
(Without Administration approval)
Technology
Cell Phone Policy
Cell phones are permitted at CHCMS, but we ask that they be turned off at school and kept in the student’s locker.
(Please see Discipline for consequences to cell phone policy violation)
Computers
Students use computers on a daily basis. Every effort is made to provide a safe, online environment for students. A
building-wide web filter is used for Internet use.
iPads
Students will use iPads during the school day and will take them home to complete assignments. Every student is
assigned an iPad at the beginning of the school year and both parents and students sign and return an iPad Agreement.
Students are expected to adhere to the Acceptable Use policy in the Agreement.
TELEVISION AND VIDEO VIEWING
CHC uses the following guidelines when determining which videos should be viewed and when to view them. Parents
signed a Waiver and Indemnity Agreement allowing video viewing within certain parameters different within each school.
§ Teachers are required to preview all videos for content and context prior to being shown in the classroom.
§ Parents must give prior written permission to view any “PG,” or “PG-13” rated video containing sensitive material.
§ Permission forms are sent home with students before each occasion.
**Cherry Hills Christian Pornography Policy:
§ Pornography of any kind (material or internet site listings) brought, shared or procured on campus may result in
automatic suspension and brought in front of the discipline panel to determine if the student remains enrolled at
CHCS. (This includes inappropriate cell phone pictures, text messages and music device lyrics, shared against
policies, before, during, or after school hours on CHCC property.)
§ First time offense may result in a dismissal from CHCS.

CONFERENCES
Parent teacher conferences are a wonderful opportunity for sharing information regarding student progress. Conferences
are held twice annually, once during the beginning of the second quarter and again at the end of the third quarter.
Formatting will be emailed to parents in advance, to ensure conferences are set up in a timely fashion. We encourage all
parents and students to participate.
COUNSELING SERVICES
When necessary, CHC staff will refer a student and/or their family for counseling services offered by private or public
sources, or to the Counseling and Restoration Department available to Cherry Hills Community Church members. The
Middle School has a licensed counselor available to meet individually with students or with families as needed for
academic and emotional intervention.
CURRICULUM
§
§
Curriculum is frequently evaluated and updated. Basic texts may be supplemented with Christian publications and a
variety of other quality materials. CHC integrates the curriculum of the Holy Bible in the midst of all subjects. Our goal
is for students to learn how to use the Word of God as a filter for all knowledge they gain.
A Curriculum Guide, available in the office or on the school’s website at www.CherryHillsChristian.org contains
specific information about each academic area.
DISCIPLINE
CHC believes the word discipline is synonymous with training. Out of love and concern for our students, we intend to
guide each one toward conduct that builds both community and self-esteem. CHC designed its disciplinary policy in
keeping with our faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and our desire to please Him in all of our actions and attitudes.
§ The discipline process begins when concern is raised that a student has violated rules of Student Conduct, as listed
either in the Essentials or under Student Conduct policies, and/or exhibited behavior or actions unbecoming to the
standards of CHC.
§ Action taken to resolve such issues includes:
Ø Individual or group student conference with a teacher and/or House Review Board.
Ø A student or group of students is asked to leave the classroom and conference with the Principal.
Ø Such conferences will always give students a chance to be heard and will include counsel and prayer. CHCMS
will attempt to have both genders of staff present.
Ø Other students may be questioned regarding their involvement or witness at a time separate from such
conferences. CHCMS will attempt to have multiple staff present.
Ø If a consequence is given, a call home will be made and a Discipline Referral issued and recorded in RenWeb.
Ø Once a consequence is given, the matter is considered closed, but it is the student’s responsibility to maintain a
healthy behavioral record.
Possible Disciplinary Consequences
In cases of more severe violations of conduct and/or policy or chronic behavior problems, CHC administration may
choose to impose the following:
§ Detention
Ø A student serving detention reports to the Middle School reception area on Thursday afternoon following the
offense after carpool, unless informed otherwise.
Ø Detention takes priority over any other commitment or activity, including athletic events. There are no excused
absences (except illness in which case the student serves detention the following week).
Ø An additional detention will result when a student is late or fails to report to a detention.
Ø Students are to sit quietly and write letters of apology to offended parties, or students may be required to write
letters (directed to Principal) of explanation/lessons learned from the incident. These letters will be distributed
appropriately. Detention is not a place for reading, completing homework, sleeping, or performing duties for the
teacher. If a student is placed in detention, they may not participate in the next school-sponsored extra-curricular
activity. (exception: Track & Field) The detention period is from the end of carpool and lasts one hour. Parents are
required to come to the office and sign out their student.
§ Suspension
Ø If a suspension is to be issued, the parent and student are asked to conference with the Principal.
Ø The length of suspension will be determined by the initiating administrator and is contingent upon the magnitude
of the infraction and overall severity of the situation. The student’s behavioral history is also taken into account.
Ø In most cases, a readmission conference between the student, parents and Principal will be convened before the
student may return to class. A Suspension/Follow-up Plan will be discussed at this time.
Page 12 | Parent-Student Handbook | Cherry Hills Christian Middle School
Suspension may result in an up to two percent (2%) grade drop per day of suspension in each class (at
Principal’s discretion).
§ Expulsion
Ø In case of a possible Expulsion, the Principal will suspend the student in question indefinitely, while immediately
convening a hearing of the Discipline Review Panel to examine the situation and make a final judgment as to
whether the student is to remain at CHC.
Ø The panel’s judgment will be final, as will expulsion if deemed necessary.
Ø Discipline Review Panel members for Middle School issues will include the Elementary School Principal,
Superintendent of Schools and Cherry Hills Community Church Executive Pastor.
Every situation calling for disciplinary measures contains some degree of subjectivity; therefore, CHC asks parents to
have confidence in faculty and administration to judge each situation fairly and appropriately. Background issues (e.g.,
family life, other environmental influences, record of past offenses) are heavily factored into the corrective action taken. In
all discipline matters, students and parents are asked to remember the Family Commitment Policy statements they
agreed to and signed within the Enrollment Agreement (See Appendix).
Ø
DRESS CODE
Education is serious business and requires an appropriate level of decorum. While students have a right to express their
individuality, their choices during the academic day must honor the Lord and fall within the expectations described in the
dress code, regardless of what is currently fashionable. Dress code is the same for all students, grades 6-8; it applies for
the entire school day, including all field trips, trips and sporting events unless students are told otherwise.
Dress Code Discipline
Dress code violations will be handled as follows:
§ All staff members are responsible to oversee dress code compliance, but dress code discipline will be determined by
members of the primary leadership board.
§ Whenever there is a dress code violation, the student will be asked to call a parent to bring appropriate clothing. The
student will be considered *absent or tardy from the class they are missing while in the office.
§ First offense - detention
§ Second offense - phone call to parent and a second detention.
§ Third Offense – parent/student conference with the House Review Board and Principal, loss of dress down privileges
for rest of the existing quarter and one-day suspension.

DROP OFF & PICK UP
General Guidelines
The ministry center lobby is open for student drop off at 7:50 a.m. (8:20 a.m. on Late Start days), 20 minutes before
school starts.
§ Adult supervision is not available before 7:50 a.m.
§ Students are allowed in the hallways or classrooms beginning at 7:50 a.m.
§ Please try to avoid picking up students between 3:00-3:20 p.m.

cases, photo identification will be required.
§ Students not picked up early must proceed to carpool pick up waiting areas.
Early Pick Up
§ Parents wishing to pick up their student before school has dismissed must come to the Middle School office desk to
sign the student out.
§
DROPPING/ADDING
§
§
Be advised that changes in schedules will be the exception rather than the rule and the principal’s approval or denial
of a change is final. All class changes will be final after the first week of class
No changes in elective classes will be made without administration, teacher and parent mutual agreement.
FIELD TRIPS
§
§
Students are transported by chartered buses or Douglas County Schools transportation.
Teachers may not take individuals or small groups of students off campus in their own vehicles for any reason.
Student Responsibilities on Field Trips
§ Adhere to regular in-school standards of academics and behavior.
§ Ride to and from the field trip on the bus.
§ Do not disclose personal information (address & phone number) to strangers.
§ Stay with assigned classmate if the teacher declares the buddy system.
§ Do not bring phones, electronic music or game devices on a field trip.
§ Refrain from yelling, keep hands to self, use soft voices and remain seated at all times on the bus.
Parent-Chaperone Responsibilities on Field Trips
§ On MOST field trips, chaperoning parents are asked to drive separately as all seats on buses are usually filled with
students and teachers.
§ Enforce the student responsibilities detailed above.
§ Keep track of assigned students at all times.
§ Follow any specific instructions given by the teacher.
§ Limit socializing with other parents and staff.
§ Do not transport any student to or from a field trip destination.
§ Do not bring siblings on field trips.
§ Do not engage in conversations of a personal nature or counsel students
FORGOTTEN ITEMS
§
§
§
§
Forgotten items may be dropped off in the container in front of the Middle School office.
Forgotten Lunch Delivery
Ø The Middle School lunch basket is located outside the Middle School office.
Ø Lunches should be delivered by noon.
Ø It is the student’s responsibility to check the basket if their lunch has been forgotten.
Forgotten sports equipment may be delivered to students after school or at the beginning of the sporting event.
The receptionist is not responsible to store or deliver forgotten items as space is extremely limited.
GRADING POLICIES
§
§
Teachers are expected to conference with the parents of students in jeopardy of failing, or those with a grade falling
below their ability level (i.e., an "A" student is performing at a "C" level).
Missing work reports are emailed to parents via RenWeb.
Page 16 | Parent-Student Handbook | Cherry Hills Christian Middle School
Standard Grading Scales
§ Grades 6-8: each teacher weighs differently the various components that contribute to letter grades; however, the
percentage scale (the point range which defines a particular letter grade) is standard throughout the school:
A+ =
98-100
B+ =
88-89
C+ = 78-79
D+ = 68-69
F = 0-59
A =
94-97
B =
84-87
C = 74-77
D = 64-67
A- =
90-93
B- =
80-83
C- = 70-73
D- = 60-63
Report Cards
§ In addition to quarterly report cards, ongoing progress reports are viewable online for parents and students.
§ The fourth quarter report card is mailed.
§ Final Exams
Ø Middle School students take final exams at the end of each semester.
Ø Schedules and review materials will be made available in a timely manner prior to testing week.
Ø Students who will miss a day due to a planned absence (i.e. family vacation, appointment), must take the final
exam prior to their absence. *See Also Homework: Absences and/or Homework: Make-up Work
Ø Make-up exams will only be given in cases of illness or other emergencies.
HOLIDAYS
The Middle School does not schedule any specific or designated parties, although there may be occasional, impromptu
celebrations. Such celebrations generally include all students in grades 6-8 coming together at chapel or an assembly and
do not involve gift-giving of any kind (except in cases of giving to those in need; i.e., Ministry in Motion).
HOMEWORK
§ Middle School students should average approximately two hours per night on homework.
§ In addition to assigned homework, pleasure reading is always encouraged.
§ Teachers utilize ParentsWeb and Canvas to record daily homework assignments and other news pertaining to their
particular class.
§ Students using all available resources can stay informed of homework assignments.
Homework Policy
All assignments are due on or before the day and time issued by the instructor. If an assignment is late, the student will
receive a 10% reduction for each day up to five days that the assignment remains missing. At that point, the student will
receive a 50% of the total value of the assignment, but may still turn the assignment in for a final maximum grade of up to
10% of the assignment’s total value prior to the end of the unit. (Units vary in length from 1-3 weeks on average). If the
assignment is not turned in by the end of the unit, the student will receive 0% of the assignment’s value. Example 1: An assignment worth 100 points is turned in 1 day late... the maximum amount of points a student may
receive upon grading is 90% of the total value. Example 2: An assignment worth 100 points is turned in 4 days late...the maximum amount of points a student may
receive upon grading is 60% of the total value. Example 3: An assignment worth 100 points is not turned by the 5th day, the maximum number of points a student may
receive if turned in by the end of the particular unit would be 50%, but if not turned in by the completion of the unit, the
grade will be changed to 0% for the assignment. Makeup Work
§ Parents of ill students should access Canvas to collect assignments for the day(s) missed.
§ Parents may pick up a student’s assignments after school if the teacher has been notified and the pickup of the
materials has been prearranged. Please be considerate of a teacher’s time and refrain from coming in unannounced.
Please make an appointment.
§ Students have one day per each day of an excused absence to complete assigned work. Example: Three days
absent = three days to make up work.
LOCKERS
Lockers are considered school property and their use is, therefore, a privilege.
§ Students are assigned their own locker with a single combination and a shared locker in the gym for P.E.
Cherry Hills Christian Middle School | Parent-Student Handbook | Page 17
§
§
§
§
§
§
§
Students are NOT to share lockers or locker combinations with others (with the exception of P.E. lockers).
Students are not permitted to enter another’s locker unless there is an administrator present and the owner of the
locker has given permission. Entering another student’s locker without permission may result in disciplinary action.
Students should discuss concerns regarding locker location with the administration.
Lockers are only accessible between the hours of 7:50 a.m. and 3:45 p.m. and only on school days.
Administration reserves the right to periodically inspect lockers. Misuse of lockers may result in forfeiture of their use.
Parents needing access to their student's locker must report to the Middle School office before entering a student
locker.
Locker Decoration:
Ø Students may place dividers, appropriate pictures, mirrors and other items inside the lockers, but may not write on
the locker’s surface or deface the locker in any way.
Ø Students are not to cover or alter locking mechanisms.
Ø Notes and/or decorations of any kind are not allowed on the fronts of lockers.
LOST AND FOUND
Student’s first and last name should be clearly and permanently printed on all clothing and belongings (backpacks,
lunches and especially coats, sweaters and hats).
All lost articles can be claimed from the bin across from the Middle School Office.
§ Unclaimed items donated to Manna monthly or are deposited in the nearest trash can.
§ Smaller items and valuables such as watches, jewelry, glasses, cell phones, cameras, etc. will be kept in the school
office and an effort made to find the owner.
LUNCH
§ Students eat lunch in the gym.
§ Due to severe food allergies, STUDENTS ARE NOT PERMITTED TO SHARE LUNCHES AND SNACKS.
Lunch Behavior
§ All students are to be seated at a table of their choice, and are to remain at their table until dismissed by a lunch
supervisor. (Exception: bathroom break)
§ All trash pick up is the responsibility of each student. Students will not be dismissed from tables until their trash on the
table and on the floor underneath their table is thrown away.
§ Students will place trash in trash receptacles on their way out to the play area.
§ Students assigned to weekly clean up are to share responsibilities in clean up duties.
§ Students will be dismissed by table at the lunch supervisor’s discretion once it is determined all students have finished
eating. Dismissal will be random.
§ Students are expected to use conversational voice levels.
§ Students are expected to show respect to one another and to all lunch personnel at all times (including staff
monitors in the hallways, staff monitors at lunch, and parent lunch volunteers).
Off-site Lunch
Parents or other family members who wish to take their student out to lunch should follow regular check out and check in
procedures.
Purchased Lunches
Lunches are available for purchase five days a week, August through May through an online service called “Wholesome
Food Services.” The company’s website is linked from the school’s main website.
§ Every Wednesday is “Pizza Lunch” day, ordered through Wholesome Food Services with a portion of each order
being donated back to the Middle School Parent Council as a fundraiser.
§ Parents can also order beverages through Wholesome Food Services.
§ Lunch orders can be placed weeks in advance.
MISSIONS
Through community service, CHC students have the opportunity to present themselves as instruments of God’s love and
blessing.
Ministry in Motion
§ One of the Lord Jesus’ commands is to take care of the poor, hungry, outcast, widows and orphans.
Ø Together with teachers and volunteer parents, the teams visit and minister at various facilities around metro
Denver (e.g., elderly, homeless, impoverished and battered.)
Page 18 | Parent-Student Handbook | Cherry Hills Christian Middle School
Ø
Middle School service projects culminate during Missions Week each spring. Sixth graders spend an entire week
focused on an inner-city missions project. Seventh and eighth graders take trips to out-of-state locations to serve
impoverished communities.

Late Start Days
CHC will provide consistent time for Elementary and Middle School teaching staff to meet for professional development.
Thirteen late start days will be built into the school year for these meetings to take place. Through this kind of
collaboration, teaching staff will better work together to improve their teaching and ensure high levels of learning for every
student.
During these meetings, teachers will discuss:
§ Professional Development
§ Student Outcomes
§ Curriculum
§ Accreditation Assignments
When are the Late Start days?
The 13 Tuesday Late Start dates are highlighted in orange on the school calendar.
School starts promptly at 8:40 a.m.
We ask that you drop off students between 8:20 and 8:30 a.m. on Late Start Days to ensure they are in their seats.
SCHOOL SUPPLIES
§
§
Middle School students will receive instruction from each individual teacher regarding supply requirements for the
class during the first week of the semester.
All materials (books, PE clothing, personal items, school supplies, backpacks. etc.) must be kept in lockers.
SNACKS
§
§
Middle School students have five minutes between classes during which time they can “snack;” however, snacks are
not to be taken into any classroom and students are asked to dispose of any trash before the class begins.
Students may bring clear, plastic water bottles to school; only water is permitted.
STAFF
CHC professionals have been carefully selected in keeping with our mission statement and exhibit outstanding teaching
ability and loving, Christ-like character.
§ Teachers are certified by the state of Colorado and many hold Master’s degrees.
§ Specialists are employed to teach computer science, art, physical education, music and media. Enrichment, reading
and educational therapy are provided through our Cherry Hills Academic Services Department (CHAS).
Substitutes
If a teacher, teacher assistant or specialist is absent for any reason, a substitute teacher or qualified staff member will fill
their position.
§ All applicants are subject to the same requirements and employment application process as the permanent staff of
CHC in order to assure quality instruction for the student body.
§ In the event of teacher absence, the teacher is required to leave substitute lesson plans; therefore, students will
receive instruction and may still be assigned homework.
Staff Information
§ CHC will supply a tutor list upon request.
§ CHC will accept no responsibility for a CHC employee’s actions or performance in other employment situations.

TELEPHONES
§
§
§
§
§
§
Each teacher has a phone extension and has access to the voicemail system.
All staff numbers are listed on the Staff Directory page.
Phones will be set on “DO NOT DISTURB” while class is in session.
Teachers listen to voicemail messages as time allows throughout the day. They will attempt to return calls within 24
hours.
Classroom telephones are off-limits to students. Students are allowed to use the telephone at the reception desk for
emergencies only (this does not include forgotten lunches or homework). All calls regarding student illness will be
placed from the Clinic.
Private messages for students received at the reception desk will only be delivered if the message is urgent.
VISITING CLASSROOMS
Parents are asked to schedule an appointment through the office to visit a classroom rather than dropping in. This
includes all church and school staff who are also parents.
§ Visitors to the Middle School may enter through the main church lobby doors.
§ All visitors are required to sign in and out at the reception desk or at the Middle School office.
VOLUNTEERS
Volunteers are vital to the life of CHC. Parents are encouraged to find a way to give of their time, talent and treasure to
enrich the schools.
Principal’s Advisory Council (PAC)
The Principal Advisory Council is comprised of three elected parent representatives, one from each grade and the Middle
School principal. A representative from administration and/or faculty may also attend. The PAC meets monthly to share
ideas and opinions with the principal. All parents are encouraged to contact the PAC parent representatives with
questions and/or ideas to be shared at the monthly meeting. Faculty members are encouraged to share anything they
would like discussed at the PAC with the principal for the upcoming meeting.
Volunteer Guidelines
§ Parents are asked to follow security check in and out procedures whenever they come to the school to volunteer.
§ Volunteers with younger siblings are asked to make arrangements for childcare.
Volunteer Opportunities
Several opportunities are available and parent volunteers are welcome.
§ There is very little need for volunteers in classes; however, parent volunteers are encouraged to join in the many
activities that take place during the school year.
§ Volunteer sign-ups occur at the Parent Council Fair and online throughout the year.
§ Parents wishing to volunteer in any capacity should call the office or the Parent Council president.
§ Volunteers who accompany students on a missions or field trip fill a supervisory role. As a supervisor, the volunteer is
expected to interact with students as much as possible and ensure proper behavior and understanding of the activities
at hand.

HEALTH & SAFETY INFORMATION
CARE PLANS
§
§
§
§
Students with a clinical health condition (i.e. severe food allergy, asthma, diabetes, seizures) must complete and
submit a Care Plan at the time of enrollment.
All medication given at school (prescription and non-prescription) requires a completed Care Plan signed by a
physician.
Upon enrollment, the Care Plan information will be shared with pertinent staff to ensure the safety of the student and
consistent compliance of the Care Plan instructions.
Care Plans must be renewed yearly. Forms are available in the Clinic, room 159.
CHILD PROTECTION
To protect your precious children, it is the responsibility of all CHC staff to report suspected abuse or neglect. If a staff
member suspects mistreatment, they will call Human Services. It is not CHC’s responsibility to investigate or prove child
abuse or neglect. If you, as a parent, suspect child abuse and/or neglect on the part of Cherry Hills Christian, please
report it to:
Douglas County Human Services
101 Third Street
Castle Rock, Colorado 80104
303-688-4825
CLINIC
The CHC clinic is available to students with health issues that arise during the school day. A registered nurse or a
CPR/First Aid certified staff member staffs the clinic. The clinic hours are 8 a.m.-3:45 p.m., on school days.
§ CHC is responsible to handle emergencies, accidents and sudden illness occurring at school, on school property and
during school sponsored activities.
§ The school nurse will attend to all injury/illness and make the decision if a student should be sent home or receive a
higher level of care.
First Aid, Injury, or Illness Procedure
§ Efforts to reach a parent will be maintained through the use of all available phone numbers: home, work, cellular,
pager, emergency contact person, etc.
§ Staff will call the next designated contact person if a parent/guardian is unavailable by phone.
§ The Nurse will contact parents of a student sustaining a more serious injury (e.g., head injury) immediately. PreSchool
parents will be informed of any injury to the head.
§ Students will not be allowed to sleep or rest in the Clinic for extended periods of time. The school nurse/clinic staff will
call a parent/guardian or emergency contact and ask them to IMMEDIATELY retrieve a student when they are ill (See:
WELLNESS POLICY).
§ The Waiver and Indemnity Agreement states that in case of illness or accident, CHC will provide any emergency care
for your child that the staff deem necessary, including, but not limited to, treatment by public or private facilities or
personnel. A conscientious effort will be made to locate a parent or emergency contact designated on the child’s
application before any action is taken. A parent or guardian will be responsible for any charges or fees incurred by
CHC for such care.
§ A note from parent and/or physician is required if a child is unable to participate in certain school activities. (See
Attendance: Absences)
ELEVATORS
Students with physical limitations or injuries may use the elevator. All other students must be accompanied by an adult.
Students needing to use the elevator for an extended period must obtain an elevator pass from the school office.
.
IMMUNIZATIONS/HEALTH STATUS
§
§
§
§
Colorado Department of Human Services requires that an updated Immunization card be on file at the start of every
school year for every student.
The Colorado Department of Health requires that students entering 6th grade have their Tdap#6 booster.
Parents must also give an updated Medical Release Form to the Enrollment office each year.
PreSchool and Lion’s Lair students must also turn in an updated General Health Appraisal Form at the start of each
school year.
Cherry Hills Christian Middle School | Parent-Student Handbook | Page 21
MEDICATIONS
§
§
§
Any medication, both prescription and non-prescription, to be administered during school hours requires a completed
Care Plan form. These forms are available in the Clinic, room 159. They are the only authorization for medication
accepted by CHC.
All medication must be in the original container and be kept in the Clinic.
Students with severe allergies may keep an Epi-pen in the classroom.
Middle School Exceptions
§ Students may carry and self-administer a one-day’s supply of an over-the-counter medication (i.e. Tylenol, Motrin,
Tums, Benadryl). Bottles of medications may not be stored in lockers or backpacks. These medications may NOT be
shared with other students.
§ Students may receive permission to carry prescription medications (i.e. inhalers) after filling out the appropriate Care
Plan form available in the Clinic.
§ Students may NOT carry controlled substances (i.e. Ritalin, Straterra).
§ Over-night field trips require additional medication permission forms.
SECURITY
The safety of our students and staff is one of the top priorities in the daily management of the school. The School,
alongside Cherry Hills Community Church Security Task Force, has a weekday plan for securing the building that includes
the following:
§ ALL CHC staff members and parents are required to wear a photo ID badge and to show it to the receptionist when
entering the building (See Identification Badge below).
§ Parents and visitors are required to sign out when leaving.
§ West Lobby doors, school hallway entrances, as well as doors at the school’s farthest south perimeters are locked
during school hours.
§ Video monitoring throughout the building
§ Douglas County Sherriff officers are on campus at various times each school day.
Identification Badge
Photo Identification Badges are required for entrance into any school area.
§ Parents and all others authorized to drop off and pick up students will be issued one free photo ID badge.
§ Parents are asked to keep badges to re-use each year. Color-coded, current year stickers will be handed out each
August to place on badges.
§ A driver’s license or other form of identification is required to obtain your badge.
§ When dropping off or picking up their child, parents must keep this badge visible at all times.
§ A visitor nametag can be obtained at the ministry center reception desk when a photo badge is forgotten, and a
driver’s license must be shown.
§ To obtain a replacement badge, check with the ministry center receptionist for available times. The first replacement
badge costs $3 and all other replacements after that are $5.
Emergency Procedures
The church has a building-wide plan in the event of an emergency. Each teacher has a copy of the Emergency
Procedures and a campus map. Scheduled fire drills and other emergency procedure drills are practiced throughout the
school year.
Asbestos Free
CHC is an asbestos-free environment. In compliance with state and federal regulations, CHC has an asbestos
management plan available for review.
SPECIAL NEEDS
CHC accepts children with special needs on a case-by-case basis. Prior to enrollment, CHC administration and the school
nurse look at the Care Plan completed by the parent to determine if the health and educational needs of a particular child
can be met.
WELLNESS POLICY
Children should be kept at home if there is any indication they are too ill to comfortably carry out the day’s routine,
including outside playtime, or if they have any symptoms of illness. Giving your child an over-the-counter medication can
minimize symptoms of an illness, but does not mean they are now well.
A child may NOT attend school if they:
§ Have a fever of 100 degrees or higher. They may return once they are fever free for 24 hours.
§ Are vomiting or have diarrhea. They may return after 24 hours without symptoms.
Page 22 | Parent-Student Handbook | Cherry Hills Christian Middle School
§ Have red or pink eyes or drainage from their eyes.
§ Have an unexplained rash or have a skin infection.
§ Have been prescribed antibiotics. They may return 24 hours after the first dose.
§ Have a cold with headache, cough, or stomachache or are too tired to participate in class.
§ Have chicken pox. All of the pox must be scabbed over before a child may return to school.
With nasal drainage, consider the color. A clear discharge is usually seen with allergies or at the onset of a viral infection.
A bacterial infection can produce yellow or greenish nasal discharge. Bacterial infections can be treated with medication.
See your physician for a diagnosis.
Communicable Diseases
Parents are required to report to the school nurse any communicable disease their child has that may affect other children
at CHC. This includes, but is not limited to chicken pox, fifth’s disease, giardia, hepatitis, etc. CHC, in turn, is responsible
for reporting the same to the Tri-County Health Department.

Proverbs 22:6
Since children learn best in a physically, emotionally, and
spiritually safe and nurturing atmosphere, teachers are
committed to supporting the development of positive
relationships. Cherry Hills Christian is privileged to come along
side each child as they grow in their faith, develop Christ-like
character, learn discernment and utilize their God-given gifts
and talents to honor Him.
Education - Beginning in PreSchool
curriculum is developmentally
appropriate. In Elementary and
Middle School our academic rigor and
technology training prepare students for
the next level.
Safety - CHC provides a secure campus
learning environment where the physical,
social, and emotional safety of each
student is a high priority.

APPENDIX C
FAMILY COMMITMENT POLICY
FAMILY COMMITMENT POLICY
For the School to flourish as a spiritual and educational environment, CHC must have the full support
and cooperation of both our students and their parents regarding administrative decisions and
operations. Together with your enrolling child(ren), please prayerfully and thoughtfully review the
following statements.
a. For the benefit and welfare of the entire student body, I agree to adhere to the School’s policies, rules and
regulations, as described in the Parent/Student Handbook, including those rules regarding disciplinary
action. The School reserves the right to disenroll a student at any time and for any reason, and that
neither the Handbook nor this document limit that right. [The current Handbook can be accessed online
or the School office can provide you a copy.]
b. I invest authority in the School to discipline my child as necessary in accordance with the Parent/Student
Handbook. I agree to cooperate with and support the School's disciplinary action regarding my child's
attitude and behavior by further addressing such issues at home.
c. If my child has difficulties with other students or with the School's rules of behavior, I will not register
any disputes with the other families involved, realizing such discussions could breed contention rather
than resolution. Rather, I will discuss the matter with the principal, director, or involved CHC staff.
d. I agree that CHC has full discretion over grade placement and/or teacher assignments for my child.
e. I understand that assessments will be made to cover any damages to CHC/CHCC property if my child is
found responsible for such. I agree to reimburse CHCC in a timely fashion for assessed damages.
f.
I commit to pray for CHC students, faculty and administration.
g. Recognizing that private education requires strong parental support, I agree to frequently participate at
CHC events or attend my child’s classroom programs or school activities.
h. I understand our continuing enrollment at CHC is dependent upon the student's spiritual growth and
academic progress, as well as the parents' and/or student's appropriate behavior and attitude.
i.
I agree to the entire CHC Enrollment Agreement.
j.
I further attest that I have full authority as parent or legal guardian of the above child to enter into this
Policy. I understand that it is my responsibility to inform the School of any address or contact
information change for our family or those listed as contacts on any forms submitted to the School.
k. I have read and support the Cherry Hills Christian mission, philosophy and beliefs statement and
understand that these biblical values will be taught to all students at CHC.
[NOTE: BOTH married parents, or divorced parents with joint custody, or all legal guardians with joint custody must
sign this Family Commitment Policy along with each enrolling child in Kindergarten through Grade 8.]
