CELEBRATING MILESTONES, MILE MARKERS, COMMUNITY SPIRIT AND A WHOLE LOT OF GOOD 2 0 1 5 A N N UA L R E P O RT A N D 2 0 1 6 R E V I E W The Magical Number Ten As ETS/NW celebrates 10 years of providing rides for seniors, we want to share these 10 awards and recognitions received by ETS/NW that demonstrate the organization’s value to the communities served. Caring Hearts Outstanding Volunteer Recognition Award (Volunteer Center, 2009) Heart of Gold Award (Village of Arlington Heights, 2010) STAR Merit Award (a nationally recognized award from The Beverly Foundation, 2012) Recognition regarding the STAR Merit Award (Arlington Heights Mayor Arlene Mulder, 2012) Formal recognition to commemorate our 15,000th ride (Arlington Heights Mayor Arlene Mulder, 2013) Community Champion IMPACT Award (in recognition of our volunteer drivers from HandsOn Suburban Chicago, 2013) Leading with Experience Award (given to driver Al Loesel from HandsOn Suburban Chicago, 2014) Seriously Effective Volunteer Management (Points of Light Foundation, 2015) STAR Award for Merit (National Volunteer Transportation Center, 2015) Service Enterprise Designation (Points of Light Foundation, 2016) An Incredible Feat of Determination Message from the Executive Director and Associate Executive Director ANN BLANCHARD, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR As we celebrate our 10th Anniversary, the numbers of ETS/NW tell the story of an agency with a small budget but a big talent for getting things done through dedicated volunteers and the help of townships, churches, and local businesses and organizations. We are approaching our 25,000th ride, which is an incredible feat of determination! When you compare it to the rest of the nation, it becomes even more impressive. The average number of volunteer hours donated by each volunteer per year in the United States was 52 – or about one hour a week. Our volunteers averaged 84 hours in 2015, or 160% of the national average. Our amazing Ron Hanschman drove 131 times in 2015, which meant he donated about 393 hours or over 750% of the national average! Our mission is to get seniors to doctors’ visits and with the average age of our active clients being 87, we are truly serving the frailest members of our communities who would find other means of transportation impossible. Our service is very personalized, and we get to know our clients. We often act as the early warning system for ANNE WALL, ASSOCIATE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR families when their loved one is having issues, because we’re in touch by phone and in person so frequently. Since our clients are not computer users, every ride we provide includes four separate interactions with the client through three different employees or volunteers for ETS/NW. Those are a lot of eyes and ears keeping tabs on the seniors we serve. In the coming years, we want to continue to provide the personalized care and compassion for our area seniors to ensure they can get to their doctors and maintain their independence for as long as possible. With dedicated volunteers and community support, we will not only survive but thrive for the next 10 years! Gratefully, Ann Blanchard ETS/NW Executive Director Anne Wall ETS/NW Associate Executive Director 3 Tipping Our Hats Quintessential nice guy wins Volunteer of the Year We tip our hats to Ron Carlow, not just because of the sheer volume of rides he provided in 2015 (105), which won him this award, but because he is the quintessential nice guy and great volunteer. After he retired, Ron became a “Meals on Wheels” driver for a couple of years, but he was looking for more meaningful ways to give back to the community when he spotted the ETS/NW table at the Senior Celebration Day at the Arlington International Racecourse. He liked what he saw, signed up, and began driving for ETS/NW in 2013. Since then, he has provided countless rides (197 to be exact), wherever and whenever needed, two days each week. Does he miss Meals on Wheels? No. He still drives for them, along with helping out at Lutheran General one day a week! Ron is not retired, he’s just rewired! No time for golf or TV for this guy and that’s the way he likes it. Aren’t we lucky he chose us? Ron especially enjoys the variety of meeting new passengers and entertaining them with a joke or two along the way. He has probably logged just as many smiles as miles, filling a need for our passengers, relieving their family members, and ultimately making the highways safer for 4 RON CARLOW all of us, by giving visually and physically impaired seniors an alternative to driving to necessary appointments on their own, like all our drivers do. When asked what advice he might have for the new driver, Ron suggested practicing patience, bringing along a good book and a few good jokes to share a little humor along the way. Sounds like good advice for all of us. On a recent ride, and the very first ride for a new client, Marilyn, Ron was told by her doctor at the scheduled appointment that she needed to go immediately to Evanston Hospital (well outside our territory). Ron didn’t hesitate to take her. His normal ride of two to three hours turned into a seven-hour ride as a result. He was given the opportunity to leave Marilyn there for another driver to pick her up, but he chose to stay with her. Marilyn followed up with a note extolling Ron’s willingness to, “make it possible for me to get the maximum benefit from the doctors I needed. I was very grateful!” Thanks Ron! It’s an honor to recognize you as our ETS/NW Volunteer of the Year. You so deserve this award. Neighbors Helping Neighbors Why Village Bank & Trust has supported ETS/NW for the past 10 years The entire ETS/NW team would like to take this opportunity to thank Village Bank & Trust for an entire decade of both financial and advisory support through generous donations, committed board members, and financial services. In addition, they have most generously underwritten the costs incurred with bringing this annual report to you. Please join us in thanking them for their service to seniors in our communities. “Congratulations to Escorted Transportation Services Northwest for 10 years of providing this much needed service to senior citizens in our community. The mission of ETS/NW of neighbors helping neighbors is near and dear to our hearts at Village Bank & Trust” said Carol Blackwood, Senior Vice President. “It aligns with our mission at Village Bank to invest in the people, organizations and businesses that make our community a stronger and better place to live. We are proud to have supported this organization for the last ten years.” Service to the community has been the cornerstone of the bank since its local beginnings. Employees at Village Bank have continued to volunteer their personal and professional time, provide financial support and serve as active participants on the ETS/NW board. Retired bankers Vice President Regina Schlamp, Kay Olivo and Chairman S. Michael Polanski began the partnership that continues today with Gloria Amling as board secretary. 5 Learning Something New Each Day Message from the Director of Program & Operations As the new Program & Operations Director, I’ve challenged myself to learn something new each day. In the two months I’ve been here, I’ve mastered the day-to-day scheduling processes, which are very detailed given the number of steps each ride requires. Every new day brings new challenges, but I’ve found everyone from our office volunteers to our clients is gracious and kind with words of encouragement. The most amazing thing I learned is how dedicated, wonderful, and giving our volunteer drivers are. I know our volunteers are the foundation of ETS/NW, and I am truly blessed to be working with them. I am working hard to make our clients and drivers feel our service is personal and the feedback I’ve received is positive. I look forward to the next 10 years of celebrating ETS/NW! Gratefully, Vicki Schlomann ETS/NW Director of Program & Operations 6 VICKI SCHLOMANN, PROGRAM & OPERATIONS DIRECTOR Five good reasons to volunteer your time— Volunteering helps counteract the effects of stress, anger, and anxiety. The social contact aspect of helping and working with others can have a profound effect on your overall psychological well-being. Nothing relieves stress better than a meaningful connection to another person. Volunteering makes you happy. By measuring hormones and brain activity, researchers have discovered that being helpful to others delivers immense pleasure. Human beings are hard-wired to give to others. The more we give, the happier we feel. Volunteering increases self-confidence. Older adults, especially those who have retired or lost a spouse, can find new meaning and direction in their lives by helping others. Whatever your age or life situation, volunteering can help take your mind off your own worries, keep you mentally stimulated, and add more zest to your life. Volunteering helps you stay physically healthy. Studies have found that those who volunteer have a lower mortality rate than those who do not. Older volunteers tend to walk more, find it easier to cope with everyday tasks, are less likely to develop high blood pressure, and have better thinking skills. Volunteering gives you the chance to meet many different people from various cultures, giving you new experiences and great conversations. Dom asked and Andy answered ‘yes’. Dom is frequently quoted as having said “Andy is a genius. He could be the next Bill Gates.” Andy hit the ground running. He worked diligently in the rare spare time he had to research and create a website for ETS/NW and became our web master, updating and protecting our website for 10 years! That’s ten years from a high school student with a challenging academic schedule, to a University of Illinois student, with summer internships at MIT Business School, to gainful employment at an international cyber security firm. During ten busy years he found time to donate his skills to ETS/NW designing, maintaining, and improving our website regularly. Clearly his parents did an outstanding job to raise such a fine young man. ETS/NW is not the only recipient of Andy’s generosity. As a high school student, he also volunteered his time with FLL (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology LEGO League) Robotics, where 12 ANDY SCHMITZ , VOLUNTEER AND BOARD MEMBER he had participated in competition as a younger student. While at the U of I, he also helped other nonprofits set up and run their websites. When asked what advice he might offer other students interested in volunteering their time, he wisely recalls volunteering looks good on college resumes. He suggests picking opportunities that are interesting to them as individuals, and making efforts to manage time constraints. Andy has come full circle here at ETS/NW. He became our newest board member in 2016, continuing to contribute his skills in improving our technology and bringing a fresh perspective to our members. When he first said ‘yes’ ten years ago, we doubt anyone knew Andy would become our longest sustaining ETS/NW volunteer. Thank you and God bless you, Andy! Like Dom Magno did in 2006, we see a bright and shining future for this remarkable young man, and we hope to be a part of it for many years to come. Divine Intervention The Marie Payes Award for Excellence Winner Jill Bergner is someone you should know. She is a retired RN who started driving for ETS/NW in 2008, thanks to divine intervention. Being recently retired, she prayed for a new path and then read about ETS/NW in her Sunday Bulletin at church. She thought ETS/NW seemed tailor-made for someone like her who is health conscious, wants to pay back, likes driving, and loves the elderly. She calls this a “GMC” or a God Manufactured Coincidence! Since 2008, she has driven countless ETS/NW passengers to their destinations, always bringing a book and her knitting; prepared for however long it takes. She occasionally works in a walk if time permits. She says, “The flexibility of ETS/NW makes it so easy to help.” Although Jill is honored to be our Marie Payes Award Winner, she doesn’t think she deserves it. You decide. She was the volunteer who drove a dialysis patient out of her way, around the high waters of the Des Plaines River a few years ago. She had to find an alternate path to get her there and herself back home, since the rising river was closing roads normally taken. Most recently, she followed her instincts to report an unsteady passenger. We informed his daughter – one of the many services to seniors and their families ETS/NW routinely provides. We later learned our client had fallen and broken his hip. Thanks to Jill, we also have several new drivers who she recruited. She even inspired her husband to help a neighbor with an occasional ride. Jill says, “ETS/NW is a perfect volunteer opportunity that allows flexibility and connection. I get so much more than I give.” Jill is a valued member of our team of caring drivers who so willingly go the extra mile. ETS/NW is most fortunate to know Jill and now you do too! JILL BERGNER, VOLUNTEER The Marie Payes Award for Excellence This prestigious Award was created in 2008 by the ETS/ NW Board of Directors to recognize an ETS/NW volunteer who has gone above and beyond the call of duty during that year. Now in its 8th year, the Award is named in honor of a woman with close ties to ETS/NW and whose remarkable creativity and passion have been the hallmarks of her life-long work. Each recipient of the Award receives a gold “open heart” lapel pin especially designed for us by Arlington Heights’ Flaherty Jewelers. 13 Revenue & Expenses 2015 January through December, 2015 Total Income $100,547 Fundraising22% Individual Donations 33% Township/Town Funding 22% Foundations/Grants17% Business Donations 2% Church Donations 3% Earned Revenues <1% 14 Total Expenses $93,758 Program & Volunteers 38% Administrative & General 51% Operating Expenses 6% Fundraising1% Volunteer Insurance 4% Board of Directors President 10 Ways to Contribute to ETS/NW Treasurer For more information on how you can support ETS/NW, contact us at 847 222 9331.
