Night and Good Luck." He and the program's
Producer, Fred Friendly, started lambasting
Wisconsin Senator Joe McCarthy with Murrow's
broadcast on March 9, 1954.
...And That's The Way It Was...
There have been many attempts by commercial
radio and television personalities to establish a
signature line to begin or end their program. Many
deserve merit... others... not so much.
"... and that's the way it is...", followed by the day
and date... was Walter Cronkite's choice of a
signature sign off line for his new assignment as
Anchor of the CBS Evening News in the early 80s.
He received a critical first reaction from Network
President, Dick Salant, but Walter went on to sign
off his program the same way every night for the
better part of the next 19 years. He delivered his
newscasts with such an unmatched gravitas... with
such a powerful dignity and grace... that many
thought him to be , "The most trusted face on
television"... or, better yet... "The most trusted man
in America"!! The quotes may change depending
on the writer du jour... but the words, "The most
trusted...", starts all of them.
I offer this sophomoric phrase as evidence of the
latter... "No matter where you go; there you are". I
don't remember who used this one nor why I
remembered it in the first place, but it's lighthearted enough to evoke a grin, perhaps, but... that's
it!
Remember, "Seacrest... Out"?
The production team behind "Americ an Idol" voted
to leave it out after very few uses.
Did anyone like Dan Rather's, "Courage"?
Anyone? Anyone?
It rang hollow with the executives at CBS as well,
evidently.
It didn't last very long either.
This month, as we gather at our respective Field
Days... partly to promote Amateur Radio, it's
befitting that we pause for a moment to appreciate
Walter for his promotional efforts on our behalf.
Walter, WB2GSD, narrated the 2003 ARRL
production "Amateur Radio Today"... in which he
praised all that we do as radio operators. Thank
you, Walter.
The slogans that did survive, gained their
acceptance through their repeated use on the air...
not from being ripe with any meaning.
Los Angeles network news anchor, Jerry Dunphy,
punctuated his broadcasts with the dramatic tones
of, "From the desert to the sea... to all of Southern
California, a Good Evening".
Walter Leland Cronkite, Jr. was pronounced SK on
July 17, 2009 at age 92.
I always enjoyed the whimsy of Charles Osgood,
didn't you?
... tying off his home-spun bits of Americana with,
"See you on the radio"?

ARRL Board of Directors Approves 9 cm Band
Plan
06/04/2012
The ARRL Board of Directors has unanimously
voted to approve the 9 cm band plan, as presented
by the ARRL UHF/Microwave Band Plan
Committee. Earlier this year, the committee asked
radio amateurs for comments on a proposed 9 cm
band plan, explaining that the purpose of these band
plans is to share information about how the amateur
bands are being used and to suggest compatible
frequency ranges for various types of application.
The committee also recognized that local conditions
The prolific writer/journalist and rarely-seen
narrator of Movietone News, Lowell Thomas, also
presented us with a nightly five- minute network
radio newscast. He rightfully anticipated having a
job the next day, at least... tagging his programs
with, "So long... Until Tomorrow...".
Edward R. Morrow signed off "See It Now", his
mid-50's TV program, wishing us two items that he,
himself, needed in abundance at the time... "Good

or needs may necessitate deviations from a band
plan, and that regional frequency coordinating
bodies may recommend alternatives for use in their
respective regions.
The new 9 cm band plan (see below) includes the
following notations:

these segments may be done regionally,
based on need and usage.

This band plan includes all other emission
modes authorized in the 9 cm amateur band
whose necessary bandwidth does not exceed
the suggested bandwidths listed.

Weak Signal Terrestrial legacy users are
encouraged to move to 3400.3-3401.0 MHz,
as time and resources permit.

Broadband segments may be used for any
combination of high-speed data (e.g. 802.11
protocols), Amateur Television and other
high-bandwidth activities. Division into
channels and/or separation of uses within

Per ITU RR 5.149 from WRC-07, these
band segments are also used for Radio
Astronomy. Amateur use of these
frequencies should be first coordinated
with the National Science Foundation.
