Root: “epi” meaning upon or over.

3. epidermis (noun) The outermost layer of the skin.
“The poison ivy caused my epidermis to itch.”
4. epitaph (noun) A statement written in memory of the
dead.
“Her epitaph read, ‘In our hearts forever.’”
6. epigraph (noun) A quotation or inscription.
“The epigraph ‘Life is a long lesson in humility’ began the
chapter of my book where the main character can’t find a
date for the dance.”
7. epiglottis (noun) A flap of cartilage that keeps food
from entering the trachea (wind pipe).
“Thanks to my epiglottis, the chips didn’t go into my lungs
when I was wolfing them down.”
Root: “bene” meaning well or favorable.
8. benefit (noun) Something that has a good effect or gives
an advantage.
“The vacation was a benefit to the tired students and
teachers.”
9. benevolent (adj.) Describes someone who is kind and
giving.
“The benevolent rescue workers pulled the trapped citizens
out of the rubble caused by the earthquake.”
10. benefactor (noun) A person who gives money or help
to a charity or cause.
“The wealthy benefactor donated money to rebuild the
museum after the fire.”
