did it together
But thanks to you, Brianna is moving forward with her life
Meet our newest
Brianna was just 13 years old when her mom
died from lung cancer. Fortunately, Providence
Hospice of Seattle was there to help.
therapy dog
“My mom got great care from the hospice
team,” recalled Brianna. “They provided us
with a support system and made it less scary
for our family, not having to be alone.”
To deal with the loss of her mom, Brianna
received specialized grief counseling from
Providence Hospice of Seattle’s Safe Crossings
grief program for kids and teens.
“When Lulu (her grief counselor) came to talk
with me, I was skeptical at first. But she made
our time together fun. I didn’t always have to
talk about what was going on with my mom.”
In addition to receiving individual counseling
and participating in other activities through
Providence Hospice’s Safe Crossings program,
Brianna also attended Camp Erin®-King
County. The camp helps kids grieve, gives them
a safe place to let out their emotions, and lets
them just have fun.

INSIDE: Read about Donna — another patient you’ve helped with your support.
Cliff and Donna Williams,
with their dog, Lily. Because
of you, Donna is able to
maintain her quality of life,
despite a terminal diagnosis.
Hospice care gives Donna the courage to live
life’s adventure – even as it comes to an end
Donna Williams’ life has been filled with adventure. She
and her husband, Cliff, have traveled around the world.
She worked as a missionary in Africa. She founded a
nursery school in Canada. She’s written five books. In
the midst of all this, she and Cliff raised four children.
Donna was always active in the community. But about
four years ago, her health suddenly started to decline.
She was diagnosed with critical nerve damage affecting her heart, digestion, and other essential functions. Then, last November, she was diagnosed with end-stage
liver failure.
Because of your generous donations, Providence
Hospice has been there to help.
“You gave us courage,” said Donna.
“When you face terminal illness, you’re out there all
alone,” said Cliff, “so Providence is truly a life raft.”
Providence Hospice helps manage Donna’s care. They
brought in a hospital bed for her, so she could be
comfortable. They help control her symptoms and her
pain, so she can still have a good quality of life and live
as fully as possible.
“Without the services of Providence Hospice, I’d be
crazy,” said Cliff. “Things would have been out of control. There’s always someone to listen, to understand.
They help us sort things out.”

Both camp and grief counseling are offered free of charge.
This is possible only because of generous donors like you.
For Brianna, Camp Erin was life-changing. “At first,
I felt awkward and scared, but everyone was so welcoming.
You could connect with people really quickly. It was really
cool to know I wasn’t alone.”
Without the help she got from Providence Hospice of
Seattle, Brianna isn’t sure she’d be here today. “I was
heading down a really bad path. I don’t think I’d be alive
right now.”
But because of you and your donations, Brianna is not
only here, she’s a happy teenager and is moving forward
with her life. Thank you for helping Brianna!

your generous donations.
You see, we’re not here to help
people die. We’re here to help

Woof!
New therapy dog connects with the terminally
ill in that unconditional way of dogs
Meet Jax! He’s the newest addition to our volunteer animalassisted therapy program. He joined us in June, and our
patients and families love him.
As a 160-pound bullmastiff, Jax might look intimidating, but as his handler, Bonnie Zinn, explained, “he’s
incredibly gentle and sweet.”
“Jax is very attuned to humans,” said Bonnie. “He has
an unusual sensitivity to feelings and emotions. He
knows when to be playful and when to put his head in
your lap.”
Animals help terminally ill patients reduce the isolation
many people feel at the end of their lives. They also allow patients to give back and continue to participate in
life, through the simple act of petting the therapy dog
or giving it a treat. It’s a simple act with a significant
impact.
People often refer to Jax as “soulful.” “He’s a very
comforting presence,” said Bonnie. “He loves doing this
type of work and knows he has a special mission.”
Jax, our newest volunteer therapy dog, makes weekly visits to
terminally ill people. He’s helping make their last days brighter
and more meaningful.
Jax is bringing joy and comfort to people when they
need it most.
