Jannika comes from a small German town and yearns to spend time in larger cities, where she feels she would become more independent. The sixteen-year-old is an avid handball player. “I am playing for ten years now and I still love it,” Jannika says. “I like to play in a team because there are lots of friends together who all have the same objective.” She describes herself as ambitious, reliable, and eager to learn. Jannika loves to travel and has done a twoweek exchange with a Spanish girl, and along with her family, visits other countries once or twice a year—she has been to the United States on two occasions. “I was overwhelmed by the difference of my life in Germany and the general life of the American people,” she says. “During the exchange year, I will certainly be able to perfect my language skills.” She is looking forward to a year in the U.S. to see the “real way of life” and to go to an American high school. Jannika also wants to share her culture. “I am very proud of my country because everybody has fundamental rights…and all Germans live peaceful together,” she says.
