Teaching To Give Cheerfully
Explanation
Each time the church meets together we often take up an offering. The offering is when
believers and church members can worship the Lord through giving. Before we receive the
offering, we encourage a short Devotional and prayer to be given to the congregation so
that it serves as a reminded to why we give, encourage believers to give and edification on
how to give. The Devotional is ended with a prayer asking for God’s blessings on the gift
and the giver. Below are serval Devotionals that can be used for the “offering Devotional”
time.

God Owns Everything
• Devotional: Genesis 1:1 says, “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.”
God is the Creator of everything; therefore, He is the owner of everything. Psalm 50:10
says, “For every beast of the forest is mine, and the cattle upon a thousand hills.” As
believers, we recognize this fact and yield not only our lives, but also everything we own,
including our money, to God. When we participate in giving our money as an offering to
God we are showing that we believe He is the Creator God who owns everything and that
we are willing to submit to Him as Lord of all.
• Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, today we want to recognize you as Creator. We know that
you are the Creator and Owner of everything. Everything we posses has come from You.
Today, as we give, we ask that You will bless the gift and the one who gives. Use it to
further Your Kingdom. Lord, we give today knowing You are Lord of all. Thank you for all
that You have given us and help us to give back to You. We ask this in the name of Jesus,
amen.

We Use Money For God’s Glory
• Devotional: As believers, we are to joyfully use our money for God's glory. Many times
people think that they can use all their money for their own pleasure, but believers should
realize that their money along with everything else in their lives are to be used for God's
glory. 1 Corinthians 10:31 says, “Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do,
do all to the glory of God.” Money is a tool God gives us to serve Him with. We ask Him
for wisdom on how to use the money He gives us and we try to use it in the way that most
pleases, honors and glorifies Him.
• Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for all the good things You have given us. Thank
You for the money that You give us each day. Help us to use the money that You give us in
a way that pleases and honors You. Give us wisdom on how specifically to use our money
for You. Help us to use all the things You have given us for Your glory. Thank you for taking
care of all our needs. We pray this in the name of Jesus, amen.

We Cannot Serve Two Masters
• Devotional: We cannot serve money and God. We must choose to love one and hate the
other. Matthew 6:24 says, “No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one,
and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve
God and mammon.” God wants people to serve and love Him alone, He does not want
the “position of God” in one’s life to be divided. Giving is a way we live out God being in
charge of our lives. Instead of letting money control our lives, we control it. We give it to
God to show that He is the Master we have chosen to serve.
• Prayer: Dear God, we ask you today to do a work in our lives. God you are in charge and
are the true King. Help us God to always choose You over money. Help us to love and
serve you. Help us each day to live for you and not for money. Help us to show our loyalty
to you by being givers. Thank you for your goodness. Thank you God for your love to us.
We pray this in Jesus’ name, amen.

God's Love Motivates Us To Give
• Devotional: God loved us when we were unlovable. When He came and gave His life for
us, we were in complete rebellion against Him. He gave up everything for us. This was an
act of amazing love. Believers are people who have realized what God has done for us
and have accepted this amazing gift of love. The love God has shown us motivates us to
love others in the same way that we have been loved by God. 1 John 3:17 says, “But
whoso hath this world’s good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his
bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?” If someone has
truly experienced the love of God, they will want to give to meet the needs of others just
like God gave the best He had to meet our need of salvation. We give to express the love
of God in our hearts.
• Prayer: Dear Father God, thank you for the amazing love you showed to us on the cross.
God, thank you for giving up everything for us. God help us to love, be givers and show
to the world around us Your amazing love. We ask this in Jesus' name, amen.

Giving Is Part Of The Activity Of A Church
• Devotional: A healthy local church is made up of people that are involved in giving. They
give to take care of the church expenses and pay the leadership. They give to help other
believers in need and support people taking the gospel around the world. From the early
beginnings of the church people were involved in giving. Acts 2:44-45 says, “And all that
believed were together, and had all things common; And sold their possessions and
goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need.” One of the things that
makes a New Testament church healthy is that it is a church where people are regularly
involved in giving. • Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, help us as a church to be a giving church. Help us to think
about ways that we can give and be a blessing to others around us. Help us to not be too
protective of our money but to be willing to give it to You for Your purposes. Thank you for
blessing us with the money to be able to give and help us to be generous with it. We pray
this in the name of Jesus, amen. 5

A Church Allows People To Worship Freely
• Devotional: God wants people in the local church to be willingly involved in giving. People
are never supposed to be forced to give. The church is not a business. It is not authorized
to charge money nor is its goal to make the best profit. God wants people to give out of
worship and love to Him not because they are forced to. Jesus has never liked people
being forced to pay money in order to worship God. Matthew 21:12-13 says, “And Jesus
went into the temple of God, and cast out all them that sold and bought in the temple, and
overthrew the tables of the moneychangers, and the seats of them that sold doves, And
said unto them, It is written, My house shall be called the house of prayer; but ye have
made it a den of thieves.” We worship God without charge, but we give out of love.
• Prayer: Dear Father, thank you for freely giving to us many things. Thank you for the free
gift of salvation. Thank you for the many blessings we receive each day that we don't
deserve. God help us as a church to never take advantage or your goodness and force
people to give. When we meet together, help us to give out of love. In Jesus' name we
pray, amen.

Believers Give The Amount They Decide
• Devotional: In the Old Testament, people were supposed to give a tithe of ten percent to
the tabernacle. They had a set amount that they were supposed to give. In the New
Testament, God says that we are not under the law but under grace (Romans 6:14b). God
doesn’t give New Testament believers a set amount that they are supposed to give.
However, out of our love for God and the cheerfulness of our heart we are to give the
amount that we think would be the best. 2 Corinthians 9:7 tells us how we are to give. It
says, “Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly,
or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.” God lets us decide how much we are to
give, but we are to have the right God glorifying motivation when we give.
• Prayer: Dear Father God, Help give us wisdom to know how much to give. Help us not to
give as little as possible, but help us to give as much as we can to you. Whatever amount
we decide to give help us to give it cheerfully to you. We pray in Jesus' name, amen.

Giving Is A Regular Practice
• Devotional: Giving should be regularly practiced. When Paul told the Corinthian churches
to take up offerings to help the believers in Jerusalem, he told them to collect the offerings
on the first day of every week. 1 Corinthian 16:2 says, “Upon the first day of the week let
every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him, that there be no
gatherings when I come.” This verse shows us a pattern of giving regularly. It is an
example that we can follow. As we receive regularly, we should give regularly.
• Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for all the wonderful blessings and kindness that
you show us each day. Thank You for the money You bless us with on a regular basis.
God help us to be consistent in giving to You. God help us to use our money for You and
Your glory. Help us to resist the temptation to use our money for our own purposes and
pleasure. Help us to get into the habit of giving regularly to you. We ask these things in
the name of Jesus, amen.

You Give From The Money God Gives You
• Devotional: Giving should be according to what you have. First Corinthians 16:2 says,
“Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath
prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come.” In this verse Paul tells the
believers to give “as God hath prospered” them. So, each person should give a certain
amount according to how God has prospered him and within his financial limits. You give
from the money that God has given to you. The more God prospers you the more you
should joyfully give.
• Prayer: Father, help us to be good givers who obey your Word. Thank you for the money
You have given to us. It is amazing how You always meet our needs and consistently
provide us with money. Help us not to be stingy with the money You give us but help us to
be willing to give it back to You. God, if You bless us with more money than we currently
have, help us to use the extra money to be able to give more to You. We pray these things
in Jesus' name, amen.

Believers Should Give With The Right Heart
• Devotional: Giving should be willful and cheerful. Second Corinthians 9:7 says, “Every
man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of
necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.” In this verse, Paul tells the church to give
according to what they have decided in their hearts and not grudgingly or of necessity.
God does not want us to give with a bad heart. He wants us to give cheerfully to the Lord.
God has given us so many wonderful blessings. We should remember all that He has
done for us and be willing and happy to give back to Him.
• Prayer: Dear Father God, You are so amazing and kind to us. Thank You for Your
abundant mercy and grace. Thank You for giving us everything that we have. God, help
us to be willing to give back to You. Help us to have a cheerful heart when giving to You.
Help keep us from being stingy with our money, rather help us to be full of excitement to
give to You. In Jesus' name we pray and ask You to guide and help us, amen.

God Blesses Us As We Give
• Devotional: Giving results in blessings from God. When we give, God is faithful to take
care of our needs and will bless us in return, spiritually and materially. Luke 6:38a says,
“Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together,
and running over, shall men give into your bosom…” As we give to the Lord, He gives
blessings back to us. He blesses us with blessings that we don’t deserve. God is not a
stingy God. As we give to Him, He abundantly blesses us. As servants of a generous
God, we should generously give to Him. He will surprise us with how good He is to us.
• Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, thank You so much for your goodness to us. You constantly
amaze us with how much You bless us. Thank You for how generous You are to us. We
don't deserve the many blessings that You give to us. Help us to be generous givers to
You Lord. Help us to want to give abundantly to You. You deserve everything we have.
You are so good to us. Thank you God, and we pray this in Jesus' name, amen. 11

God Is Pleased When We Give
• Devotional: Giving is pleasing to God. Hebrews 13:16 says, “But to do good and to
communicate forget not: for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.” The word
“communicate” in this verse means to share with others. This verse shows us that doing
good to others by sharing what we have with them is a sacrifice that is pleasing to God. It
brings God pleasure when we give and share with others the blessings that He has given
to us. God likes to see us give up our money for others. It is a sacrifice that pleases Him.
• Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, Help us to share with others the money and other blessings
that You have given us. Help us to be a blessing to the people around us. Help us to try to
do things that please You. Show us how to give and give us opportunities to be a blessing
to others. Thank You for Your grace and the salvation You have given us. Thank You for
giving us the money to be able to give in the first place. We pray this in the name of
Jesus, amen.

God Gets Much Thanksgiving When We Give
• Devotional: Giving results in thanksgiving to God. Giving what God has provided for us
not only supplies others' needs, but it also causes others to give God thanksgiving. In
Second Corinthians chapter nine we find out that the Corinthian church is giving to an
offering for the believers in need in Jerusalem. Second Corinthians 9:12 says, “For the
administration of this service not only supplieth the want of the saints, but is abundant
also by many thanksgivings unto God.” This church's giving not only helped provide for
the needs of the believers in Jerusalem, but it also caused many people to give
thanksgiving to God. When we give, we not only show forth that we are trusting in God to
take care of us through giving, but also we cause others to give God thanksgiving.
• Prayer: Dear Father God, thank You for giving us the opportunity to give. We want to see
You receive thanksgiving. God, help us to give. Help us to thank You, and also cause
others to give You thanks. God help us to not focus on ourselves but care about You and
Your glory. We pray these things in the name of Jesus, amen.

100% Of Believers Should Be Involved In Giving
• Devotional: Every believer should participate in giving. Even if you don't have much
money you should still be involved. The churches of Macedonia were in extreme poverty,
but they gave generously to the Lord. Second Corinthians 8:2 describes their situation. It
says, “How that in a great trial of affliction the abundance of their joy and their deep
poverty abounded unto the riches of their liberality.” This verse tells us that they had
“deep poverty,” yet they still gave generously to the Lord. In the Bible, giving is not just for
the rich, but it is for all believers. No matter if you only have a very small amount that you
are able to give, God wants you to be involved in giving.
• Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, help us to all be involved in giving. Help us to want to give
to You from what we have. Thank You for all the blessings You have given to us. God, help
us to rely on You to provide for our needs and give to You from what we have, no matter
how small it is. We ask this in Jesus' name, amen. 14

Together We Can Do More
• Devotional: It is not the responsibility of just a few people to give, but it is something we
do as a whole. Everyone gives willingly and according to what he has so that one’s
abundance supplies another’s need. Second Corinthians 8:14 says, “But by an equality,
that now at this time your abundance may be a supply for their want, that their abundance
also may be a supply for your want: that there may be equality.” This verse shows us that
we can do more together than we can do separately. God can use us to help meet each
other’s needs. Together we can do more!
• Prayer: Dear Father God, thank You so much for all that You have done in my life. Thank
You for everything You have done. God, help us to be a very generous and giving people.
Thank You for the opportunities we have to be blessing to others and thank You for how
You have used people to meet needs in our lives. God help us to live for You and honor
You with our lives. Thank You for Your love for us. We pray this in Jesus name, amen. 15

How Much Should A Believer Give?
• Devotional: How much should we give? Second Corinthians 9:7a says, “Every man
according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give…” God lets people decide how
much they are to give. For every person it is different, we need to seek God and decide in
our heart what we can give regularly according to our means. A good place to start is
anything above 10% of our income, because it shows that we are no longer under the law
where people were required to give a 10% tithe, but under grace. We have so much to be
thankful for, so let’s excel in our giving.
• Prayer: Dear Father God, thank You for all the blessings You have given us. Help us to live
our lives for Your glory and kingdom. God, please give us wisdom on how much You
would have each one of us to give. Help us to give sacrificially and help us to decide to
give an amount that would honor You. Thank You for giving us the money that we can use
to be able to give back to you. We pray this in Jesus' name, amen.
