Not marble, nor the gilded
monuments
Of princes, shall outlive this
powerful rhyme;
But you shall shine more
bright in these contents
Than unswept stone,
besmeared with sluttish
time.
When wasteful war shall
statues overturn,
And broils root out the work
of masonry,
Nor Mars his sword nor war's
quick fire shall burn
The living record of your
memory.
'Gainst death and alloblivious enmity
Shall you pace forth; your
praise shall still find room
Even in the eyes of all
posterity
That wear this world out to
the ending doom.
So, till the judgment that
yourself arise,
You live in this, and dwell in
lovers' eyes.
HE Dr Commander The Chevalier
Bryan R. Olive RN, GCJ
Dear Confreres and Consoeurs,
It is with great sadness that I must report the
passing of the Commander of The United Kingdom
Commandery "Edward the Confessor", H.E. Dr
Commander The Chevalier Bryan R. Olive GCJ.
Commander Olive died on May 27, 2013, at the age
of 80, from pneumonia after a brief battle with
cancer.
H.E. Dr Commander The Chevalier Olive was a
great personal friend to me and a dedicated
member of our Order. Over the past five years he
enthusiastically built the UK Commandery from a
small group to a vibrant and leading Commandery
of the Order of Saint Joachim.

As a lifelong Navy man, Commander Olive was
particularly pleased with our Order's association
with Admiral Nelson, making our investitures in
Portsmouth and tours of HMS Victory all the more
meaningful.
It is impossible to list Commander Olive's
accomplishments outside of the Order. He seemed
to have a leadership position in almost every senior
social and fraternal organization, knew everyone
and was generous with friends and fellow members
of our Order.
H.E. Dr Commander The Chevalier Olive served as
a career Officer for thirty-seven years in the Royal
Navy, continuing a three hundred year family
tradition of service in the Royal Navy. Whilst
serving in the Royal Navy he was seconded to
United Kingdom Universities and completed the
degrees of BA, BA (Hons), MSc, and PhD, followed
by post-Doctoral research in "Decision Making in
Complex Systems" for which he received the
prestigious award of Defence Fellow to the Armed
Forces. His academic qualifications resulted in his
appointment to the NATO Research Group and
research at the Royal Military College of Science,
Shrivenham, England. As a further challenge, he
also earned his wings and the Private Pilot's Licence
for single engine aeroplanes. The combinations of
the disciplines of life in the Royal Navy and the
disciplines of the mind in academia were perhaps
the catalyst to the decision to engage in Monastic
life. After years of training he was accepted as a
Benedictine Oblate as part of the Community of
Monks in a Benedictine Monastery and lived his life
according to the Rule of Benedict.
Some of his many honours include being made a
Freeman of the City of London and a Liveryman of
the ancient Worshipful Company of Carmen founded by King Henry VIII in 1517. He was a
member of the Honourable Artillery Company, the
oldest Regiment in the British Army having been
granted its Charter by King Henry VIII in 1537, with
the Regiment's Captain General being Her Majesty
Queen Elizabeth II. He was an armiger and bore
Arms granted by the College of Arms of England.
H.E. Dr Commander The Chevalier Bryan R. Olive
GCJ is a widower, and is survived by his children
and grandchildren.
Our thoughts are with him, his family, and with our
consoeur Dame Cherry Kirkwood-Martin DCJ, who
was his friend and constant companion of many
years.
I am informed a private funeral will be held next

week with a public memorial service at Portsmouth
Cathedral to be held in the Autumn on a date to be
fixed when we may celebrate his life and friendship
together.
We have lost a true friend.
