Behavior Lesson Plan: Cool Tool Universal Expectation: Show adults and peers respect when talking. Skill/Setting: Verbal respect in all environments. Grade Level: All PURPOSE OF LESSON (what do you want them to know) Students will understand that tone, volume, and attitude are part of showing verbal respect. Students will take a moment to think before speaking to prevent their emotions from effecting how they react verbally. TEACHING TOOLS/RESOURCES/EXAMPLES 1. Bag or bucket to hold pieces of paper. (**optional-can hand out situations or pick from a bucket) 2. The sheet of scenarios (please be sure to cut apart and fold up prior to lesson) STUDENT ACTIVITIES (modeling/role play/lg, sm group/reading/writing) 1. Cool tools partner and homeroom teacher start with a short role play. (Don’t let students be aware they’re doing a role play until after). Partner comes in room with attitude snapping at teacher about not being given needed materials for lesson. BE VERY DISRESPECTFUL. (i.e. Hey! Thanks for not sending me the form for today. Now I’m not helping you…) 2. Turn to students and ask what was wrong with how *partners name* talked to me and how could they say it in a more respectful voice. 3. Discuss how tone, volume and attitude affect the way a person says something. For example, If you say to a student “ Where is your homework? “ Student replies “Its RIGHT here.” (w/attitude) but if the student just simply states in a calm voice, “Its right here.” It comes across with a totally different meaning. ***Primary focus on word choice(i.e. Adult/ student asks do you want to play a game-student replies no/yes instead of whatever) and Intermediate focus on how word emphasis portrays different attitudes. FOLLOW UP/REINFORCEMENT ACTIVITIES (re-teaching, modeling, demonstrating, show knowledge) 1. Have students come up in pairs and pick a piece of paper out of the bucket. The paper has a short situation on it. Read it to the class or role play the situation. (Have students read it if possible-intermediates) 2. Discuss how to fix/change the situation to show respect. Students can act out the situation as well to fully understand the tone and word emphasis. ***Word decoding: -if the word is CAPITAL say it loud. -if the word is italicized say it sassy.
