In his address, Mr. Motlanthe said” No doubt if there is to be a rebirth of our continent; it will have to be driven by the exuberance of Africa’s youth. The Sir Ketumile Masire Foundation’s focus on issues pertaining to youth in the context of peace and governance therefore fills a strategic void.” Mr Game Bantsi aka Zeus who spoke on behalf of the Youth said leadership was not about earning a title and position, but should be understood as qualities that one develops internally that becomes a guiding line for the individual. He further said there was need to leverage the education, connectivity and access to information and have a transformed face in governance that involves young people. “To you our current generation of leaders, I say believe in us, nurture us, empower us in a meaningful and impactful manner, give us the opportunity to lead and be responsible before deeming us irresponsible,” Game Bantsi aka Zeus, Youth Speaker during 2014 SKMF Gala Dinner FORMER PRESIDENT KGALEMA MOTLANTHE The annual dinner is a formal event that attracts leaders across business, politics and civil society as well as individuals who support the work of the foundation. GAME BANTSI AKA ZEUS YOUTH AS AGENTS OF CHANGE - A LECTURE BY FORMER PRESIDENT MOTLANTHE OF SOUTH AFRICA Over 100 Youth delegates gathered at the University of Botswana’s Centre for Continued Education for an inspiring lecture by His Excellency Kgalema Motlanthe, Former President of The Republic of South Africa. In his presentation Former President Motlanthe said ‘Being an agent of change is an obligation on all the African youth. After all, at some point the youth will have to stand before the court of history to testify what it did to restore the dignity and humanity of the African. When that moment comes, the charge sheet read out will remind the African youth, in the words of actor and playwright, Moliere, that: ‘It is not what we do, but also what we do not do, for which we are accountable.’ According to Motlanthe, African youth have the future of our continent in their hands. History has charged them with the epochal responsibility to take the African continent to the highest possible trajectory of development. Unity is of paramount importance and it remains the responsibility of the African youth to mobilise Africans across borders for a shared future. For a clearer future a vision must also be developed, propelled by theorisation, debates and new paradigm of thought attuned SHARING EXPERTISE - THE YOUTH SUMMIT ON LEADERSHIP & GOVERNANCE 110 like-minded Youth delegates participated to interact, network and explore ideas and opportunities with one another. The 2 day forum informed and educated youth on issues of leadership and governance. It was an opportunity for delegates to engage with local and international speakers on the topic. to the conditions of Africa. African development should be the primary concern of African thinkers. “No doubt if there is to be a rebirth of our continent, it will have to be driven by the exuberance of Africa’s youth. Endowed with a critical and radical consciousness and driven by basic humanistic precepts, the African youth should know that they are in service to a greater vision…the vision of a better Africa!” Former President Motlanthe of South Africa YOUTH SUMMIT 2014 by Eteng Mohwasa - Delegate This has never been an ordinary event for me, ever since I started attending it. The knowledge shared at the Youth Summit always lives me wanting to do so much more for my generation. Every year we are privileged to have well renowned speakers grace us with their presence. This year I was moved by the Debswana story, it did not only change my view of what diamonds do for our country, it also brought a sense of appreciation. It fuelled my dreams of making a change in my generation, as Mr. Balisi Bonyongo shared with us that his job is to change the dreams of Batswana through the diamond industry. We share a dream. Mrs. Mmasekgoa Masire-Mwamba is a phenomenal woman who made us understand and appreciate diplomacy as an art or skill of securing advantages and how it helps conduct negotiations between representatives or heads of state. Now I know that diplomacy is vital in international relations and that it starts with the ability to listen with humility. Moving forward as leaders we are now well aware of the importance of diplomacy in our dealings. Our demonstrative speaker Mr. Brian Goulden spoke to us about leadership and innovation. As youth we are leaders who inspire others through experiential leadership. We should not be afraid to make mistakes and must be prepared to learn, listen and have conviction as leaders of today’s generation. Mr Goulden emphasised on the need of positive leadership as an opportunity to make an impression. What’s a summit without Brian Goulden? Today, I am a proud product of the Sir Ketumile Masire Foundation’s Youth Summits and trust me to pull more youth to the next summit, as I cannot drink from the well of success alone. Many thanks to the Sir Ketumile Masire Foundation team and its board members for the great work they continue to do for us. THE PEACE CENTRE INITIATIVE In June 2014 two Peace Centres were officially opened at Pandamatenga and Kasane primary schools. The events were attended by then Assistant Minister of Education, Mr. Rakhudu and the Australian Ambassador. Another two centres are proposed for the Kalahari and are expected to be launched in 2015. Since April 2012, the SKMF in conjunction with Dūcere Foundation has been engaged in the “Peace Centre initiative”, launched in May of 2012. The goal of the Peace Centres is to provide a place and programme for children to feel empowered by understanding and engaging in meaningful discussion around the issue of promoting peace and equality, thus becoming advocates for positive change and developing them into future leaders. Women’s Intergenerational Dialogue “Bridging the Generation Gap” The Sir Ketumile Masire Foundation & Putting Women First Trust’s Women’s Intergenerational Dialogue “Bridging the Generation Gap” took place on Wednesday, December 10th at The Venue, Plot # 13, Mokolodi. Over 50 Senior and Junior Women, including former Speaker Nananyana Nasha, participated at this inaugural event. The purpose of the dialogue was to revive and sustain the women’s movement through dialogue. Young women were afforded an opportunity to engage and exchange ideas and experiences with senior women leaders who have made significant achievements in their respective fields. The Intergenerational Women’s Dialogue - An Amazing Experience - By: Keikantse E. Phele A space filled with beautiful women yet connected by my singular observation; passion and strength to change the world and make a difference. The day began in earnest and with the introductions; at that point I certainly knew I was at the right place at the right time. Some introductions were light while others more detailed and therefore giving us a feel that there was already that a lot of work being done out there. The diversity in the room was reminiscent of the future that Botswana has. It reminded me of 2 things; part of the lyrics of our national Anthem; Emang, basadi, emang, tlhagafalang! Re kopane le go direla Lefatshe la rona (….And women close beside them stand; together we’ll work and serve this land) Our common national adage; Mosadi Thari ya Sechaba loosely translated as a woman is the carrier of the nation. The theme of the day which also got me pretty excited when I received the invite; “Intergenerational Women’s Dialogue” was truly appropriate. Women from all walks of life shared their experiences. What was evident was that the movement of women championing the cause for change and the landscape of women rights in Botswana needs more agile captains to steer it to the levels of need and want from an individual level to the rest of the nation. The dialogue was a clear indication that the agents in young women are there, just what is needed is to actively engage them and put a voice to their cause. It is not a common thing that on a normal day I could have shared who I am with Mma Nasha, or be seated next to her with such easiness; or chatted easily with Mmasekgoa Masire-Mwamba, a received a big hug from Mma Sakufiwa or be enchanted by the ever energetic Mma Molokomme and Mma Setshwaelo and made contacts with other amazing young women. It was a channel to discuss achievements, challenges and how we as young women are moving Botswana forward. anywhere in the world but chose to come and serve her people back home. Truly heart-warming and touching accounts. Inspiring and touching stories inspired many, I believe; from the unemployed youth who adopted a family of orphaned children to a social worker who quit her job to look after neglected children in a small town, to a young Doctor who could have had a job Thank you SKMF for such a beautiful dialogue and to the senior women and young ladies, it was precious, let’s forge forward into the future of Botswana together. Let us ignite the fire of the movement. 5 senior women spoke on the 5 R’s Respect, Responsibility, Reciprocity, Resilience and Relationships. Wise words, advice and experience capped the day and were a pure reflection of what is a collective for a bright future. That woman must stand together, pull together and make Botswana and the world a better place.
