To infinity and beyond Spring Term 1st half

As children developing personally, socially and emoonally we will connue to develop our skills of playing
and working co-operavely with others through a range of new acvies. We will work in different pairs and
teams to build and test rockets and to make up our own adventures using stories such as ‘The way back
home’ and ‘Aliens love underpants’. As we learn about space and real life events we will be inspired to ask
our own quesons to find out more and explain our own knowledge to others.
To infinity and beyond!
As children who are physically acve we will explore different ways of travelling on and around a range of
PE apparatus and recognise the need to work safely. We will make our own risk assessments in all our large
scale physical acvity including during construcon tasks of building various space models and role play areas. Through music and dance we will connue to develop our own imaginave space journeys and adventures.
As communicators and users of language we will connue to develop our listening skills and recall informaon and learning. As we learn the differences between fact and ficon in the range of space stories and
informaon books that we share we will be encouraged to respond with our own comments and ideas, for
example we will compare stories about the moon to the real moon landing and informaon books about the
moon.
As readers and writers we will connue to explore a range of books and compare the differences between
ficon and non-ficon texts and events. We will also have opportunies to explore both ficonal and nonficonal wring through wring le(ers to characters such as Mr Spoon, moon informaon books and descripons of our own made up aliens. Our imaginave story wring will be developed as we act out adventures and talk about the structure of our stories with a beginning, middle and end. We will then be able to
record them using this structure in a variety of ways and verbalise simple sentences to go with each part,
including in wri(en form.
Inspiration
Real life events such as the moon
landing and space travel, which are
beyond our own experiences, will
inspire us to explore new things
and to take on new challenges. For
example Neil Armstrong demonstrated bravery when exploring the
unknown so we will be inspired to
be brave and explore the unknown
in our own world and in our learning.
Possibilities
Spiritual and moral
Aspiring to achieve great things we
will endeavour to: embrace challenges and investigations, looking
for solutions and questioning why
and how things happen.
In our spiritual and moral development we will: delight in Gods creations as we look at photos of the
moon and planets and consider
real life events beyond our own
experiences. We will develop our
curiosity about life’s big questions
as we begin to distinguish between
fact and fiction.
Inspiration
As mathemacians we will explore many mathemacal concepts through our imaginave space role play.
For example we will explore the numbers to 20 counng forwards and backwards in our rocket countdowns,
we will explore measuring as we weigh moon rocks and compare the heights of different aliens and we will
learn more about the properes of both 2-D and 3-D shapes as we make our own rockets. Our inspiraon
for our maths work will be our compleon of different maths missions for characters such as Mr Spoon from
Bu(on Moon and we will be given real life problems to solve through our invesgave work.
As children with an understanding of the world we will look at similaries and differences between different materials as we invesgate what they would look like on different planets. For example, what would
chocolate look like on Mars, a hot planet, compared to Pluto, a cold planet. We will find out about astronauts and food during space travel and use this to invesgate what happens when we add water to a range
of different materials and food. Through finding out about different planets and what they are really like we
will be able to compare them to our own planet and talk about how they differ to our own environment.
As expressive and arsc children we will use our imaginaons to make up our own stories and space adventures. We will design and make rockets and other space travelling equipment, exploring a range of tools
and techniques as we learn more about shaping, assembling and joining the materials.
