TAXONOMY
Taxonomy is the science of naming,
describing, and classifying of organisms.
Fold and glue this side down!
The Greek philosopher Aristotle was the
first person known to classify organisms
scientifically. He only classified things as
plants or animals. This classification
system lasted for almost 2000 years.
In the 1700s, Carolus Linnaeus created a
naming system to classify living things.
He grouped organisms by their visible
traits and gave them two-part names.
This is called ‘binomial nomenclature’.
When classifying organisms, these
four questions are applied:
Is there a nucleus present?
PROKARYOTIC or EUKARYOTIC
How many cells does the organism have?
UNICELLULAR or MULTICELLULAR or BOTH
How does the organism obtain its energy?
AUTOTROPHIC or HETEROTROHIC or BOTH
How does the organism reproduce?
ASEXUAL or SEXUAL or BOTH
