April 28, 2013 - St. James` Church

Invitations & Information
April 28, 2013
Dear Friends,
Grant us so perfectly
to know your Son
Jesus Christ to be the
way, the truth, and
the life, that we may
steadfastly follow his
steps in the way that
leads to eternal life …
If you were in church last Sunday at either our 9:10 or 11:15 a.m. services, you got the chance to meet our new
Bishop, Andy Dietsche, and to hear what I thought was a wonderful sermon about a Christian response to the
violence in Boston in recent days. (If you missed it, check out www.stjames.org/sermons.) If you were at the
9:10, you also saw 16 youth and six adults reaffirm their baptismal promises as adult, confirmed members of
the Church. It was a great day!
On your way out, you probably also received some special Mardi Gras beads — and no, we’re not that far
off in our calendars! We were passing out beads as a way to remind everyone about our annual Community
Festival, coming up on May 8, which this year has a New Orleans theme. It is always fun, with good food and
great conversation and even dancing. But most importantly, it is a celebration of our life together in Christ.
It is a celebration of our life together in worship. It is a celebration of our fellowship. It is a celebration of the
mission we share. And it is the principal way we raise money to fund our Grants Committee’s work to support
grassroots organizations in New York serving those most in need. I hope you will donate, sponsor, and attend.
Today’s collect reminds us that Jesus promises to be our way, our truth, and our life. When we walk in the
way of Jesus — particularly by sharing God’s love with those most vulnerable among us — we find out the truth
about God: that God considers each of us to be beloved children, and gives us to each other as companions to
love and cherish. “By this everyone will know that you are my disciples,” our Lord says, “if you have love for
one another.” And that is a Life worth celebrating and sharing.
In Christ,
Today at St. James’
